I've traveled behind them when they were on the Southern working the 5:53pm (?) from Exeter Central. Not surprisingly the acceleration up to Exmouth Junction was sparkling compared to the Bullied pacifics. I don't recall any turbo whistle - just a very noisy diesel. I lived a mile or so from the main line and never heard a steam train but you could hear those diesels clearly. Nigel
