    How sad.

    Never mind.

The MW running boards are especially prone to this bending as there is not much in the way of longitudinal support. What I found was that if there was a bend like the one you had, when the body was attached and the whole lot was screwed to the chassis, it straightened out. If the bend was more severe I replaced the running board.

The Avonsides were similar but nowhere near the same extent.

Loose shunted. Fly shunting is usually illegal and dangerous. And yes I have seen it done at Twickenham station with a standard 4MT tank infront of platform of passengers.

Lovely photo. What is that long rake of PT wagons with the main writing on a slight diagonal at the far right.

    Paul

I'm always getting them mixed up - yes loose shunted.

Well, I just found out that Deltang have ceased production and have no more receivers to sell. This makes converting tiny radio controlled models a lot harder, for sure!

Micron sell a version which is at least four times the size, and Sol Expert sell a version which doesn't come pre-wired, and I think that's just about it as far as alternatives, currently anyway. Bit of a shame really 🙁

    I’m gutted about it!

  5. This is the right hand side of Pat's layout 'The Rotten Row'. For portability and a hope of finishing it, I'm only using the left hand side.
The trackwork is all in place still as shown in photos and I have the missing piece of harbour wall capping to go with it.

There is an LED light bar mounted to the inside.

    The track is wired up.

Collection only from Bristol (due to size) or I can drop it off locally.

    Dimensions:

    Width 93.5cm

    Depth 39.5cm

    Height of front fascia 47cm

It's been a long while since I built an Airfix/Dapol Pug...  In fact I think it was around 1980 if this photo is dated accurately.  I'd just built the one on the left - the one on the right is the remains of my dad's Kitmaster attempt from a generation earlier.  No paint, just decals straight on to plastic.

    pug-generations.jpg.697b51be15e8838f4a2324679bf8e18e.jpg

Inspired by this thread a mere 44 years on (with a pause in other projects while waiting for paint), I wondered if it might be time to build another Pug kit or two... and perhaps create a small variation on the original.  Not sure whether it truly qualifies for this topic, as it's unpowered and the wheels won't even rotate fully, but here it is anyway!  Not sure how this is going to blend in with the APT fleet, but whatever!

Presenting the Pugger-Garratt, an insane L&Y design for hauling massively long freights along tightly curved dockside sidings under low bridges on incredibly steep hills.  Seen here sitting on a bit of OO gauge track dumped unceremoniously atop my dad's OO9 layout for the scenic backdrop.

    20240205111405P2030565stackedcopy.jpg.266edc2b84addc2339a95ecb1d70fbf9.jpg

The boiler is from a Hornby 3F body, I think - it looked "about right" on the Peter's Spares website, albeit a Midland design rather than L&Y.  Cab, tanks, running gear, chimney and dome are from the pug kits; the coal bunker (inspired by the design of a NZ Garratt) is carved from an old Dapol 9F kit tender (I pulled it apart to investigate whether the 9F's boiler might suit - it might have suited...), while the mid-section frame is plasticard and H-beams.  Some very basic plastic-rod-in-hole pivots provide articulation.

    20240205105900P2030515stackedcopy.JPG.caf90118f57f8da9174bef4deae578da.JPG

A bit of Photoshop AI smoke just for fun.  It's still in need of some numbers and a couple of other details.  I wanted to keep a certain Puggishness to the look of the loco, hence trying to find a boiler of similar dimensions to the curve of the original saddle tanks, and using the chimney/dome from the kit (probably impractical in reality for a that size of boiler!).

    20240205105003P2030493copy.JPG.1e29a450e6aa205a47768e9aa0d87bac.JPG

Broadside view - it comes in at about a scale 60ft over the buffers.  I suspect in reality it'd need a little more in the way of wheels ... I completely failed to install weights in the tanks, so both engine units are ever-so-slightly nose-up with the weight of the boiler on their tails.

Catching the rays on the curve, and highlighting my badly-carved plasticard end plates on the tanks...

Stabled with my more usual traction preferences.

And as for what happened to that 1980 pug kit ...

It spent a few decades in the attic, but was rolled out to meet its crazy cousin. 😉

    Love it! Top bashing.

  7. 'Black Prince' the Half Hornby, Half GBL 9F has had some titivation.

Now sound-fitted with a decent capacitor (as the pickup was dreadful and it stalled all the time), it was back on the workbench to have the rear coupling height altered.

At the same time, the moulded tender handrails were cut off and replaced with wire ones (not got a replacement tender ladder as yet).

This was brush painted using paint sprayed into a rattle can lid, then matt lacquered for an even-ish coat.

The smokebox door dart was carved off and replaced with a metal one.

A Mainly Trains etch supplied some front lamp irons and then the whole loco body was matt lacquered and treated to a smattering of weathering powder.

I know, it shouldn't have the name for BR service, but it's a great name and we have a lovely pic of my grandfather standing alongside the loco with Mr. Shepherd himself, so it's staying.

Also joining the fleet is a GWR parcels railcar, this was previously a test mule for a DCC shop so I got it quite a bit cheaper than normal. The same shop yielded a sound chip and stay-alive. Sounds great!

It was far too clean so has also been treated to a very thin lacquer coat over some basic powders and panel join highlights.

In the background you can see the in-progress first attempt at making better china clay hoods using the toilet paper/PVA/cling film method. We'll see how that goes when it dries!

  8. New poster on the shop!

The shop is open again (for a while) and we have a new product - a fan poster for The Titfield Thunderbolt inspired by the work of legendary designer Saul Bass.

Price is £12.50 including UK postage (frame and mountboard not included).

All profits from the sale of this poster go to UNICEF's Children of Gaza Crisis Appeal.
