When I was in the Air Force, back in the 80's/90's, I was posted to RAF Stornoway and used to work at RAF Aird Uig, where we looked after an LF transmitter for the Navy to talk to their Subs via Morse Code. It was a huge machine, rightly known as 'The Beast' it had been there since the 60's, I believe, and had not had a Frequency change on it for years. I remember one weekend we'd been doing some servicing on The Beast which meant we had to point the output to the massive dummy load, which was in a locked room and crank the power output up to 75Kw. This Servicing was going very badly and we had multiple issues, which meant we were very late handing it back to the Navy, which should've been done by 18:00. We finished about 18:30 and pointed the output back to the 600' mast outside the building and went and had some food, just as we sat down to eat the lights in the building started to flash and the tv started switching off & on. My Corporal & I stared at each other wondering what the hell was going on, when I realised that we'd not turned the output power down from it was on the Dummy Load and The Beast was now drawing so much power when it was keying up that it was affecting the Mains Transformer in the village as well, as all the lights in the village were flashing as well, I legged it to the Transmitter Hall and wound the Power output back down to less than 50Kw which stopped the Power Draw. Ok so I received the YaMoRC Booster and connected it all up, but I don;t seem to be getting any signal from the B-Bus from the Z21. I've got an RJ11 cable from a telephone which is a straight through cable, is this correct or is there a specific B-Bus cable needed?? Cheers Neal.

Thanks all for the information. I decided to go with @WIMorrison advice and ordered a YaMoRC YD7403, not quite the power output of the NCE Booster, which is 5A, but at 3.5A it should be sufficient to keep a few sound fitted locos ticking over. Thanks Neal.

Dear Hive Mind, Is there any way of connecting a Z21 Start (White) to an NCE Booster?? Is there a special cable required to utilise the B-Bus between the Roco Product & NCE Product?? I only ask because we tried to connect up the Z21 Start to the NCE Booster via the B-Bus sockets with a straight through 4-wire cable and the Booster is not seeing a signal from the Z21, when we connect the NCE booster to another NCE Product with the same cable everything is tickety-boo, which suggests the Z21 has an issue with the B-Bus socket or a different 4-wire cable is required, i.e. a cross-over of some sort?? Any clues?? Cheers Neal.

Steve, Thanks for that, I got my letter a day or so ago. I have to say, so far, much to my scepticism about it, I've really enjoyed Traction being in BRM, although you did start of with some cracking articles, the HST one is fascinating and gave an insight into running HSTs on the Western region that I never knew. I'm afraid you'll have a job, unfortunately Geoff passed away very suddenly a couple of years ago, and although we, BMRG, still have the layout much of Geoffs research was lost to us when his laptop went to his family. After spending the whole weekend on the DEMU stand, I still managed to blow my budget with the Traders. 😜 The booking in of my car was a faff with the NECs Yoyage system with no option to tag my vehicle as a vehicle for unloading on the Saturday morning, only option was as a delivery vehicle, so I gave up and the NGS kindly offered to transport the Stand for me. My only very small observation for the Organisors would be.......please, please, please could Societies have some Tea/Coffee vouchers?? It is a long day and we've, well DEMU, don't claim any expenses but some free Tea/Coffee would be appreciated. Other than me moaning about getting the Stand in, once we were in and running it was a very good show and a good opportunity to meet up with friends and to talk Trains for a weekend....Oh and do some modelling 😜😜 Regards Neal.

I managed to get my car booked in but only as 'Restock Vehicle' for the Saturday morning between the times of 07:30 & 08:00, which considering I'm coming from deepest darkest Wiltshire means I need to be out the house for 06:00 at the latest and then I can't guarantee to be there between those times. Anyone know what is happening for breakdown on the Sunday?? Will it be a free for all to get a parking space near Hall 5?? I don't need to get into the Hall for breakdown, but I can't cart the stand stuff all the way across to the Car Park!! Regards Neal.
