  1. https://order-order.com/2022/10/21/whos-backing-who-the-spreadsheet-returns/ Currently it appears to be Sunak 82, Johnson 62, Mordaunt 24 with 47% of MPs having indicated their voting intention. One thing I noticed is the number of blank green votes for Johnson representing MPs who are required to remain publicly neutral - whips, party board members, Tory vice chairs and 1922 chairmen. An indication perhaps of the view amongst party members. If the proportion of votes remains this way there is a real chance of Johnson being chosen by the party! Apologies for sharing my depression. 😟
  2. Should there be hatches to access the covered ends? I don't know but, assuming they are hollow, I can imagine the need to check they are empty of water.
  3. This might be handy, Chris. https://live.staticflickr.com/6080/6062870105_5f317c2fed_b.jpg It's the section of disused canal at the Black Country Museum. Behind the camera is the section which often appeared in Peaky Blinders. If you look carefully you can see there are more barges than it first appears though they may have been the victims of some over loading!
  4. I love the way that several barges are listing to one side due to the temporarily lop-sided coal heaps during the loading process. Could be a feature worth modelling.
  5. Ah, perhaps that is what they are supposed to be then, especially since Chris's example looks a little wide, i.e. a barge rather than a canal/narrow boat.
  6. If it is a towing post, why are there three of them? I have only ever seen towing ropes attached higher up too, so the horse is pulling down a little rather than up (if you get what I mean). I'm tempted to think they are just poor representations of posts for mooring ropes and might be better replaced with 'metal' fittings.
  7. NHY 581 is the master of Lack. Take a look at any of his layouts. I built a couple of layouts on 1.9m Lack shelves when our sons were younger. I topped them with insulation board (very low density fibre board) and cut channels for wiring. Points were hand operated but there's no reason you couldn't hide a horizontal bar or wire-in-tube which could be attached to a point motor or operated by hand from the baseboard edge. Mounting a point motor below would either mean the motor being a long way from the point or involve digging into the egg box structure of the shelf. It is also an expensive way to operate a point that isn't very far away. It is worth looking at the rest of the Lack range to see if the various tables give you any ideas for different sized layouts.
  8. No. I don't think you're being unreasonable. A room for your hobby is just another thing to go on the list of features you are looking for. If your hobby was restoring classic cars then you'd want a garage. If it was gardening then you would want a decent sized plot. If you had children you would want an appropriate number of bedrooms. If you liked dinner parties you would want a dining room. If you enjoyed cooking then a tiny kitchen wouldn't be appropriate. If theatre was your thing then living in the middle of nowhere wouldn't be fun. If you enjoyed hillwalking perhaps living in the middle of a city wouldn't be your first choice. Do you need good transport links? Do you need to be near a school? Do you need a hospital nearby? Do you need to be near parents or grown up children? My thinking would always be to make a list and then have a grown up discussion about the relative priorities of everything on it with the aim of arriving at a shortlist of the features that really matter to everyone concerned. I have a feeling though that none of this has anything to do with what Gilly was hoping to hear when the question in the OP was posed. 🙂
  9. I'm surprised that no one's mentioned yet that the sublime beauty of the spatial relationships contextualize the distinctive formal juxtapositions.
  10. Chimney - I am undecided. Not so much about whether it is correct or not. More about whether it bothers me. I'll just have to wait and see, I think. Red buffer shanks - Definitely out with the black paint. Handrails on 5045 - Bright metal and grey plastic? If that isn't just the individual sample, some more paint will be needed. Smokebox door handle - Appears to be a solid moulding thereby making it more of a challenge to restore a nice finish if one chose to replace it with something better. Coal rails - Distorted and crying out for replacement with brass strip or maybe just some straight plasticard. Aside from the above it looks impressive and I'm looking forward to receiving the one I ordered.
  11. I'm starting to wonder if the Lib-Dems have activated their sleeper agent.
  12. The double white lining is a Gorton oddity. 5045 was turned out in 1925 with GCR style lining. I don't think any others got this. I understand that the outer lines would have had a vermillion edge too but presumably Sonic have omitted this because it was very fine. I can't find a real life example (not that reds came out well in photos anyway) but here's a model of a Q4 showing the vermillion edging to the double lining on the boiler bands and tender: https://www.facebook.com/653950138060160/photos/a.804228879698951/3556645164457295/?type=3&is_lookaside=1 Where have you seen "yellow/gold" lining? LNER goods locomotives were black with red lining up until a 1928 economy measure removed the lining leaving them in plain black. Secondary passenger locomotives retained the red lining.
  13. Sad news indeed. A truly inspirational modeller who, through his gentle humour and easy to read articles and books managed to make the most atmospheric finescale modelling seem accessible and achievable.
  14. Sewage disposal appears to be deregulated already. Without the law being applied firmly enough the water companies can just carry on as they have been doing, i.e. pumping sewage into the rivers and the sea whilst maintaining shareholders' dividends. The same seems to be true of waste incineration and energy generation.
  15. I am struggling to visualise Johnson as Ringmaster rather than as a major element of the lions' new diet.
  16. Not as cheap as Jason's example but when my last tube of the Bostik equivalent of UHU ran out I bought some Wilko own brand adhesive. I'll be sticking with it from now on! (Sorry.) https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-all-purpose-clear-adhesive-67g/p/0150158 https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-all-purpose-clear-adhesive-32g/p/0081178
  17. I think you're right to feel undecided about the reply, Mick. To me the addition of "for yourself" makes it sound like one of those non-apologies i.e. "I'm sorry if you feel offended" rather than "I'm sorry for the offence I caused". I suppose all you can do regarding the postage is complain again and request a refund and never buy their products again. It's galling when retailers and manufacturers just don't care.

    Little Muddle

Will the thatch have a signature? I believe thatchers finished a roof with something that identified it as their work. For example, there is a thatched cottage near us that has a fox standing on the ridge. I have also seen birds e.g. pheasants, owls etc.
  19. And 'as before' you've done an excellent job, Chris. Keep it up and you'll soon be back on track. 👍
  20. It appears our new Chancellor's PhD was for a thesis on the Great Recoinage of 1696. Does that make him an expert in economic disaster?
  21. Near to the explosions, Bornholm was soviet for a year, so they ought to be on the alert for unexpected referendums.
