  1. Hi All, Tracks to the Trenches - 13-15th July 2018 Apedale Valley Light Railway - North Staffordshire www.ww1-event.org Well, it's less than 2 weeks to go so I thought it was worth mentioning about the Third event in the First World War Centenary Trilogy at Apedale - which is a Narrow Gauge & Living History megafest. On the modelling front, there are a vast array of Narrow Gauge military (mostly WW1 or related) model railways in 009, 1/35, O14, O16.5 & 16mm scale. A good range of traders and much more - including a display of highly detailed 16mm locos/stock from the famous the late Henry Holdsworth collection. We are reliably informed that a pre-production sample of the forth coming 16mm scale LROD Hunslet 4-6-0T from Accucraft should be making an appearance too (potentially even operating at some stage). As if that wasn't enough - you may also get to see the 12":1ft real thing! For the first time (and probably not repeated again for a long time) you'll be able to see Hunslet 4-6-0T, Baldwin 4-6-0T, Hudson 0-6-0WT, Kerr Stuart Joffre 0-6-0T, Brigadelok 0-8-0T all in action to a back drop of a sea of First World War living history groups/displays, Cavalry, Vehicles, Field Gun, Motor Rail 20hp (Wizz-Bang) Bent-frame locos, 40hp Tin Turtles and more original/authentic WW1 rolling stock than anywhere else. Many more details available on the event website - www.ww1-event.org

  7. Just to clarify: These 50hp Baldwin tractors were all built as 60cm machines (there were some similar 2'6" ones for the Russians too). In post war France/Belgium they were a cheap source of motive power and it was quite common to see them converted to standard gauge to shunt factory sidings etc. This also frequently happened to the Dick Kerr PE's (Ashover one is well known) & 40hp Simplex locos (the one in the Imperial War museum was converted to Standard Gauge post war) too. There are approx. half a dozen (or more) of these Baldwin locos that I know of that have been converted by industry post-war & still survive. Many were converted in a similar manner - however the last one mentioned in the link above had a much more severe conversion with either a 2nd set of frames, or its originals split & widened (there are a couple of survivors like this too). Cheers,

  19. Dear All, September is fast approaching (some would say too fast!) and the plans for the "Tracks to the Trenches" First World War centenary event (12-14th September) are pretty well finalised now. This is shaping up to be a busy event, which we hope will be a fitting tribute to and start of the First World War Centenary period. The Tracks to the Trenches - 2014 event website (www.ww1-event.org) is gradually being updated with the latest news and confirmed exhibits (rail, living history, road, etc). Over the next few weeks, we will start to publish the exhibit lists - it has become quite extensive!! For anyone interested, advance ticket sales are now live - in addition to beating the queues, it offers a free event guide with each order. The ever popular "Access All Areas" passes are also available for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday too. The details of the embedded model railway exhibiton will be posted to the RMweb exhibiton thread. Please watch this space for more exciting news!
  20. Just to let you know that the Railwy Gazette books started being shipped last week - there are quite a number of orders to process, but I think most of the pre-orders were sent out over the last couple of days.....
  21. Dear All, Just following up on my post below - we have been updating both the www.wdlr.org.uk & www.ww1-event.org websites over the last few months. There is a nice photo of our recently completed Class D open wagon & all the lettering. The lettering was generally applied in the same form - but different manufacturers had slightly different styles/sizes. Many wagons also seem to have recieved larger lettering (high up on the bodyside) when in service - presumably to aid the soldiers in being able to keep track of it all. During the course of my research, I have started to see photos of Class D & E wagons together & apparently in different colours/liveries. Presumably this was Green (& they seem to have the ironwork in black) and battleship grey. All I can add to this at the moment is that we have definitely found "battleship grey" on various wagon components & the chassis/wheels etc on the wagons we've restored so far. Readers may be interested in the new book that is being published by the Moseley Railway Trust (Railway Gazette - Special War Transportation Number - details can be seen on the front page of www.ww1-event.org ) - this is being formally launched at the MRT's annual gala this weekend & is a little pre-publicity opportunity for the major "Tracks to the Trenches" centenary event next year. This will be at 3pm on Saturday 14th September (this Saturday) on the platform of our main station. There will be plenty of interesting photo opportunities!! Advance copies of the books themselves will be available to inspect, but the bulk supply of sales copies are not due to be with us until early October. However - we are offering the only opportunity to acquire one of the Hardback books about a month early! Please look out for the special raffle at our shop!
  22. Hi All, I have recently purchased the first DVD mentioned below. The footage is very good - mainly British (& Dominion) light railways. However, the script used for the commentary is not so good - I was arguing with it when I watched it Next time, I'll turn the volume down & listen to something else. I suspect that the ex/retired officer voicing over the commentary, was not an expert in the railways - perhaps more to do with the artillery, cavalry etc (which is more in keeping with the other DVD's this company produce. The second DVD (can't remember if I have it or not!) seems to be mainly US military railways? Cheers,
  23. As promised, we've just done some updating to the Tracks to the Trenches - 2014 website - current layout listings now included! www-ww1-event.org Looking forward to seeing this layout there next year! Cheers, Gareth

I'm pleased to be able to announce the fine spread of layouts currently booked for this years' 14-15th September gala at Apedale! www.avlr.org.uk Annascaul (OON3) - Annascaul station was found on the well known 3
  25. Hi Mike, That's looking really good! There is an outside chance that Hunslet #303 (based at Apedale) might be ready for the major "Tracks to the Trenches - 2014" event at Apedale - if the boiler funding gets resolved. We now have an event specific website - www.ww1-event.org There are a good number of WW1/military/post-war WD related layouts invited, provisionally booked etc. We are always keen to hear of more. Hopefully we'll release the layout listing soon. Best regards, Gareth
