  1. 1897 crash at Preston July 1896 gantry for electric light signalling installation at Leeds Hunslet goods yard oil firing trails, LNWR works shunter 3017 L& pug Great Eastern Stratford shed oil tanks backhead of an oil fitted loco
  2. Just as i start getting into it, my iron dies, though we have an old iron from my late grandad, its a Henley Solon 25W, a quick google last night gives 1940's & 50's, some people saying they were prone to corrosion and shorting while others saying theyve had theirs in continual use for 60 years without having to change the tip.
  3. Please could magazines stop perpetuating the now debunked myth that the loco now known as lion is from the Liverpool & Manchester (looking at you model rail 320)

It is not known for sure, the LMS found remains of an old loco and just assumed it was an L&M and gave it the name Lion even though all the main dimensions are different to the actual Lion, there were 4 other locos bought by the docks which more closely match

    3. Northmoor

      Northmoor

Very interesting article in the last Heritage Railway describing the background to this "myth".  Must admit it was news to me.

I learnt of it from Anthony Dawson

  4. Its been a long time since i talked about my little Bagnall but recently got back into it. One of the main problems was how to eventually attach the valve gear return crank, then while working on the Overlord S100 i decided to copy it. On the pug's rear crankpins i drilled out the thread and glued in a 14BA bolt from the back, and the return crank will solder onto the nut (below on the left), i cant remember how long ago i did this but this past week ive been making parts to start putting the motion together; top right are the motion brackets, the brackets to go them to hold the expansion link and lifting link crank and shaft, the slide bars and finally the half finished crossheads. I dont think ive ever worked on motion this small before and will be my first time making walshearts
  5. The little ex Kilmersden Hunslet at middleton continues to rust away with no prospect of restoration because it owned by a group of individuals, the railway cant touch it without their permission but apparently hasnt had any contact with any these owners for decades, dont have any way contacting them, dont know their names or contact or even if they are still alive
  6. Im working on a 7mm Bagnall on a pug with a new motor, cant remember what i got it from (photo from 2 years ago)
  7. Was talking last night to a friend who is a regular volunteer on the NYMR, the levisham team did indeed do several questionable things even bordering on breaking the law (there is more than what is reported in the media) but at the same time the lack of management that let them run wild for so long, like the class 20 incident which brought to light the failing to certify drivers. The team claimed that they own the now confiscated wagons but this is untrue and they did rent out one of the cottages which should have been free. On the other hand as a result of the suspension, they currently dont have anybody looking after Levisham.
  8. Other night i was looking through old magazines for brake van drawings and skimmed past an article for building an M&C Crampton in 4mm, i'll try to go back and find it again
  9. The lifting ropes were made on jig of 3 bits of rod in a block of wood, the thread is twisted around 1 and secured with a blob of super glue to soak into the twist and the around the next rod, giving me 2 Y shaped ropes which i painted to stiffened before removing Went over the ropes with a dark wash and generally weathered the wagon
  10. We recently had this on our club exhibition stand, boxes and boxes of old modellers that hardly anyone will buy, but ones like Bylines always sell, last year we purged all the modelling mags from before 2000, hundreds of them and still have loads
  11. Just about ready for painting and then move onto filling the gap which is a short backscene between this board and the bridge
  12. Eventually did the container writing yesterday, the top W looks weird just because it goes over the strap and after painting the shackle loops i made weeks ago could now go on This afternoon, screwed back onto the wagon and tied it down, still the crane lifting rope work to do
  13. and? why does it just have to be about ideas to make models from these ideas, enthusiasts like to dream about a line that could have been either from real proposals of just from their head but without any intention making models of it. have a browse of the forum, about half of all posts are about prototype discussion not just models
  14. a railway that is not real, there for imaginary railway, maybe youre thinking a bit too philosophical, the thread is about any railways that dontt exist, be it route or history
  15. Another old job ticked off, finally finished the side tipper. Firstly was rebuilding the rockers since i got the curvature wrong and to sit the body lower. Adding the slotted plates, the body has 2 pins on the underside which run in the curved slots to limit the travel of the tipping, then the gaps on the chassis could be filled with lead, covered in glue and painted to hide it 9n the back side of the body there are 2 latches to lock the body level, these are handles on chain hanging from the body with holes which slot onto pins on the chassis level Tipped
  16. Just from the article, there seems to be some mismanagement and miscommunication from both sides and the situation shouldnt have been able to escalate to this degree
  17. Not much happening since the show because club space is needed for orher layouts for a while so now we can only have 2 boards up at a time so the fiddleyard is out and im building a proper display board front to replace the one that was quickly thrown together for the show An angled board of 2 parts hinged in the middle with 3 fold up legs Folded up
  18. Thanks Stephen, it must have been graces guide that i read then pecketts was indeed started in 1881 after buying fox
  19. Some years ago i read somewhere that Thomas Pecket (1834-1891) of the engine company fame was born on Garden Street, Wakefield and the family moved to Bristol while he was young, but now i want to double check this so i didnt imagine it or mixing it up with someone else but i cant find anything about this online
  20. Wasnt able to get a good camera and light angle to properly show the colours. For the load im not yet decided, current ideas are; big tree trunk, rails or a lattice girder footbridge
  21. Painted and weathered but with a slight snag. One bolster on While putting the other on, the nut got stuck on the thread and ended up turning the head of the bolt out of the top and then got stuck in the bolster, trying to wind it out with pliers just tore off the head end and the same on the nut end leaving the middle stuck inside. I got it out by drilling and cutting around it leaving a slot to fill and redrill New bolt in and the head covered up, just needs painting
  22. My own experience there is that theres a lot buildings at the heritage centre but only about half them are open, if there isnt something happening in the event hall or the railway isnt running, there isnt much to do
  23. On the Benzole wagon, for some reason a set of buffer springs i have are slightly larger diameter than usual at around 2.25 rather than the usual just under 2mm so i got a custom set of stocks 3d printed Some painting this morning on the bolsters, on the old wagons they had 2 shoe brakes but now going for wooden 1 shoe. Im re using the old draw bar and bolsters Some more painting
