  1. Close to UK home is Heighington, built in 1872. Another claim to fame, this station saw the departure of the first, steam hauled passenger train behind Locomotion no1. The 19th century box controls the entrance to the 21st century Hitachi factory building the Azumas amongst others. Still in operation, not due to close, along with Shildon Box until 2027. 2. I thought this Fowler, being delivered to Truro might be overweight. I have since confirmed at 11 tons, it is within limits for the Loriet L, rated at 15 tons. It will be chained up, eventually, as soon as I can source some chain locally. Mike Wiltshire
  3. Dapol prairie manages my 6 coach rake with no issues even on uphill stretches. Mike Wiltshire
  4. You need to check the wheels. I once bought a no motor loco thinking a nice easy job to add a motor and discovered all the driving wheels were all live. Clearly for a display case. Mike Wiltshire
  5. it is also mounted via the two hooks/brackets hung over the central hand rail knob as well as the lamp bracket. I have not seen that before. Mike Wiltshire
  6. I have just accessed the article (July 1923). The quality is much better than my faded photocopies. Thanks again. Also found some useful van images and plans as I got carried away looking through other months. Mike Wiltshire
  7. There were a few different ones about, The Sharman one has the extra support plate seen top right and came with sufficient bearings. Gibson pack 4M57 has 1.5mm bearings to suit. You can make your own. The only other images I have here is the SEF Metro tank.. When all was running sweet, I tack soldered the gearbox to the frames so it would not move and then made an additional support from scrap brass and a piece of copper tube with a 1.5mm bore, soldered between the frames. The weakness with the DS10 was the bearing at the worm end. Vibration of the shaft would work the bearing loose sufficient for the worm to rise and drop out of mesch or gear lock. If you hold the shaft on a DS10 you can flex it as it is only 1.5 diameter. It took a while to figure out the cause. Picking up the Sharman box it was eureka moment. Saying that, with the extra support the DS10 has proved reliable on a number of small engines with some of mine now over forty years old and still running fine. I had a friend who put one in a K's LMS Garratt and wondered why the kept failing. My father and I (and many others) had a lot of issues with the DS10. There were no further problems with the added support or if using the Sharman type gearbox. Mike Wiltshire
  8. If you are using the DS10, I recommend adding an extra bearing o the end of the shaft. It stops the bearing in the motor wearing at the worm end, an issue that came up in the past resulting in a new motor required. Some of the fold up gearboxes had a plate with a bearing included to just this. I have some in smaller locos and they are as good as new. Mike Wiltshire
  9. I haven't. Will have have a play on there when I get home. I am using a photocopy of a frail edition in a friend's collection. Wish I had a scanner at the time.
  10. The HL 57xx fits. I also used it in a Buffalo and a 54xx built for a friend. My 2021 is as the original kit as it has the solid brass chassis with limited options for motor and gears available at the time.
  11. As Keith says, High Level produce a gear box specifically for the GWR pannier tank driving the year axle and raising the motor enough to fit in the firebox completely hidden. Explode diagram here on page 10 to show it would fit. https://www.highlevelkits.co.uk/_files/ugd/27e471_43d18fb06c284462a85d975ac0064baa.pdf Mike Wiltshire
  12. Third class was four across upholstered in red with black flecs. First class was three across in brown with gold and brown lace. For once there is accurate information about this stock as the Great Western Magazine covered their introduction in great detail photographing both inside and out. Mike Wiltshire
  13. That was certainly the plan. D83,C45,E109,H26, E110, C44, D84 was allocated to the 3.55 ex Swansea in 1923. It changed immediately with the addition of a 70ft brake compo of a different vintage as Swindon did not design a South Wales brake compo. Oddly they were never classified as South Wales stock in the registers. A batch of ten, upon completion, went straight into the Cornish Riviera until the 1929 stock was introduced. Even LNER A1 4474 (nameless) Victor Wild was hauling a full train on the CRE during the 1925 exchanges. Three of the buckeye sets went straight on to a Cheltenham working and a similar set was soon working on Worcester trains as far as Great Malvern. If I have done my sums right (probably out by a few) there were 117 built in total plus the Dreadnought rebuild, far too many for one specific route. I love this stock. I have been building them from the MAJ days, so they always have a special place on my layout. In later years there were bogie changes so I have a couple running on 7ft bogies. For me the SW Stock stands for Send Wherever as this is what happened. Great build Neal Mike Wiltshire
  14. Enjoy a well earned retirement Mr Ellis. Thank you for the years outstanding service. Mike Wiltshire
  15. As Johnster says, there were a lot of 45xx in the Paddington area. In the image below it is a a possibility that the 4575, preparing to be released could go on the end of the Mainline and city stock. In addition, the stock was known to be used on High Wycombe trains both direct and via Maidenhead. A Metro tank would have an issue climbing the bank from the branch up to Wycombe and larger engines were the norm on that route. There is a view in this link that shows a big prairie at the head of a train of M&C stock at Paddington. https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/mary-evans-prints-online/paddington-station-platform-5-6-london-14126978.html Mike Wiltshire
