  1. Soldered track has its advantages and disadvantages. The latter include the lack of chair detail and the need to gap the copper surface of the sleepers to isolate the rails from each other. Despite these negatives, I prefer soldered track for its durability, relative ease of fabrication and overall look that, with a lot of help from Martin Wynne's Templot design software, is a great improvement on ready made OO gauge track from Peco, etc. The lack of chair detail I can put up with. The gaps have to be filled. The last few days have seen some experimentation on what material to use to fill those gaps. My first plan was to use Isopon filler, bought from Halfords. This is the classic "bondo" that I used when I was restoring classic and vinatge cars back in the 1970s. I don't remember having a separate hardener with the old stuff, though and getting the right proportion of hardener proved to be difficult with the new improved product. So I tried something else. This was Milliput filler. Again, the product promised much but in my puttying hands did not deliver quite the effect I was looking for and some of the fillings pulled out with minimal sanding. Back to the tool box, then. I found an unopened tube of the French equivalent of Polyfilla. It's called Semin Rebouchage et Lissage and is specifically for interior and exterior use, including humid areas. It is much finer grained than even fine-grained Polyfilla and comes out of the tube like thick cream. And it works! Good adhesion, easy sanding and a very smooth finish. Edit to correct spelling of Milliput!
  2. Having completed the first two baseboard structures, it is time for a change. All of the kit and materials for making hand built soldered copperclad sleeper track is now assembled, so a good excuse to get started on the switches (I think switch is the correct term as the point is just one part of a switch; however. . . .) On a point of semantics, I should also add that when I last made my own track, the sleepers were made of PCB, short for printed circuit board. That acronym is apparently now used to describe a chemical. So now sleepers are "copper clad". Back in the early 1970s you could by copper clad sleepers already cut to length for standard track. My source (C & L Finescale) sells long strips that have to be cut up. This makes sense for the switches but is rather tedious for regular track. So, having printed off my Templot plan (at 100% scale - most important!) I began to glue the sleepers down with UHU glue stick. This washes off easily when the track is cleaned prior to painting. Then I started to add the bullhead rail. I am building the release crossover at the town end of the platform so it makes sense to build them together. This is particularly important as the prototype was oddly shaped to accommodate the end loading platform: http://warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrss535a.htm The photo exaggerates the shape but I wanted to include this in the model. The outer rails were added first, then I fabricated the v-shaped frog, using the track gauges to make sure I had the right spacing. Next, the point rails were added after filing down the moveable blades. I used my Dremel to do the filing, with a small drum sander attachment. At all times I used the Templot "go by" and then the track gauges to ensure the rails were in the right place prior to soldering. A couple of solder tacks, then check again before finishing off. Finally, the check rails were added, using the check gauges and a 1mm shim of brass sheet to set the correct gap: At this stage the completed parts of the switch can be tested using, in my case, the front bogie of my Finecast King, currently being renovated. With one of the switches nearly finished, I sat back and admired my work: A few comments: I probably use too much solder. But I would rather use more than less, as long as the solder doesn't interfere with the running. It is true that the solder hardly represents proper chairs, but most OO gauge track chairs are out of scale anyway. Besides, once painted the solder will blend into the background. The switch blades will be connected to a stretcher bar (from C & L Finescale) and this will be actuated by a Tortoise switch motor. At the present time there is no insulation between rails and the frog is not isolated electrically. The copper cladding will have to be carefully removed down the center of each sleeper. Again, I seem to remember that regular PCB sleepers were already gapped by the vendor back when I was young. So, one switch down, one half started and three more and a double slip to go. Edited because I forgot one photo.
  3. The weekend allowed me to get on with Module 2 as it rained all day Sunday and I had nothing else to do except when the Rugby was on TV. And today I completed the joining of the two modules, forming a lightweight but rigid base: The structures fit nicely into the spaces cut in the polystyrene and I think the height will be just right once I have added a thin cork track bed. At the moment the layout has a spacious feel about it. No doubt this will start to disappear when track is added, but I am hoping that by making the baseboards 2 feet wide there will be a feeling of space that is often missing from a branch line layout design. The only real compromise has been to collapse the length of the layout. While the baseboard was perched on my balcony I took a second shot at "ground level". The fast setting sun obliged: Meanwhile I have started to construct the copper clad bullhead rail track, using the Templot templates. Except I couldn't complete any track until this afternoon when the track gauges finally arrived. The next task is going to be the release crossover switches/points. Here is my workshop area; it is used to be my desk for work but I am slowly rectifying my priorities.
  4. Steve, Thanks for the encouragement! I am trying hard to honor the geographic locations of each building but the shortening of the layout makes some compromise necessary. There is also the need to keep each switch on one module, though this was covered by the Templot planning. The Warwickshire Railways site has been essential in planning and I find myself continually referring back to various photos. On the station platform I plan to install 'gas' lighting that will flicker when on, and also 'plant' the flower bed that features on several photos.
  5. A progress report after two days. Module 1 is the first 3' x 2' baseboard which includes the station platform, goods shed and weigh bridge hut. I should mention here that the structures you will see on the photos were all made by Steve (steveNCB7754) and purchased last year when I first mentioned that I was looking at starting this project. Steve's models are superb and I hope I can do justice to them with the rest of the layout. (Steve, the station has been slightly disassembled on purpose, please don't panic!) As noted in the previous post, my baseboard design has the philosophy of light strength. So the materials are minimal but with a honeycomb approach that seems to be working out well. The frame consists of MDF base/skirting board material available here in France, strengthened with strips of 15x15 and 10x20 mm pine. On top of this is a 20mm thick sheet of polystyrene board used for insulation in the real world. This has sound deadening properties but is quite soft so has to be treated with care. It also needs plenty of support so additional supports will be added where necessary prior to gluing to the framework. The buildings were designed to sit in the layout, so openings in the polystyrene sheet have been cut and a sub-frame added to screw the buildings to. There will be interior lighting as part of the project, so the buildings will be removable. The copper clad flat bottom OO-SF track will be built in situ on a cork road bed. The design used Templot © and some of the photos below show the print out for this module. See earlier posts for more details on the track plan design. Well, enough writing, how about a few photos. The weather here has been warm and sunny, so the balcony/loggia has been my workshop. Here the basic frame takes shape: Meanwhile, the Templot prints were taped together and placed on the polystyrene sheet, together with the three structures. The Earl was added but is swamped by the height of the platform, yet to be sunk into the polystyrene. The structures need a sub-strate to be screwed into: Next the polystyrene sheet was cut so that the structures could be test fitted. The Earl looks a lot better for it! The view from the other end, looking toward where the buffer stops will be: And a bird's eye view: Unfortunately this photo shows some serious buckling in the paper template which won't be present in the final version! Tomorrow will see additional bracing added to the frame and then the polystyrene glued down.
  6. Some 46 years since the track as lifted in this quiet corner of Somerset, the permanent way gangs have returned once again. After having expressed a desire to go down the flexi-track route, I have persevered with the original ply and plastic option as intended, for the time being at least. Step 1 was to make a suitable jig from offcuts of plasticard.Pre-stained sleepers are then slotted in and the first rail added, the chairs having been threaded on. I've printed off templates from Templot and stuck to the track bed having cut through the sleeper positions. The track edges are drawn on with a ball point pen and the rail positions pushed through the template into the foam beneath. Step 2 is to glue down the sleepers with first rail into a bed of PVA, before completing the other rail using appropriate S4soc jigs. It helps that I've managed to rig up space to allow me to work on 2 adjacent boards (1&2) up in my tinking room. Plan will be to complete scenic base layer for board1 before moving onto board 3. Track testing so far is an assortment of wagons of varying wheel base and weight. All is well.
  7. In my first post on the modular fiddle yard design I mentioned B8 turnouts had been chosen for the fiddle yard. There is very good reason for this which I can now show. For several weeks I have been working on a few designs for 2mm finescale flat bottom turnout construction fixtures. I started off with Templot to create the turnout drawing then imported this into Autocad as a DXF. This is where the fun began as I had to change some sleeper spacings in order to incorporate a 'hidden' moving sleeper to change the turnout. While this is nowhere near accurate, it suits me and removes the headache of soldering thin wire to the switch blades, feeding them under the baseboard surface and connecting to some sort of operating unit before it even connects to the motor to change it! The above is what I came up with. Some of you will notice it looks like a carbon copy of a Fast Tracks turnout fixture. This is no coincidence as after speaking to a few firms based in the UK I soon realised it would cost from £150 per fixture and all they would do is create a part from my drawing. The risk going down this route was my drawings may not be as accurate as I thought despite my best intentions. I then spoke to Tim Warris of Fast Tracks and he said there would be no problem converting my drawings into proper working fixtures but he would require a sample of rail to ensure the tolerances were perfect. This was sent off to Canada and two weeks later I had a package with my four turnout fixtures, a 'Frog Helper Tool', No8 and N010 frog/switch filing block and a 'Stockaid' tool to file away the foot of the flat bottom rail: While not cheap, I know these are exactly what I wanted and have been tweaked by the guy who produces these for a living to North American prototypes. These tools will likely last my whole modelling life and hopefully produce hundreds of turnouts. They are designed to work in exactly the same way as their American counterparts in that you have several key copper clad sleepers which slot into the machined pockets, the flat bottom rail slots into the grooves ensuring the 9.42mm gauge is maintained perfectly to allow you to solder the rail onto the copper clad sleepers. Once this has been completed you can proceed with removing the turnout from the fixture: The next stage involves a laser cut sleeper base which I have also designed from the same drawings as the fixtures. The few I have at the moment were samples created by Tim Horn and look fantastic but I have since edited the drawing to take the laser kerf into account. This sleeper base is glued to the bottom of the rails: This leaves you with a working turnout and all that is required is a few cuts with a jewellers saw to isolate the frog from everything else so it can be switched. The photo above looks really rough as it is a test turnout and I went a little crazy with my rotary tool while removing blobs of solder from the PCB sleepers. In future I will use a lot less solder and fill the isolation gaps in the PCB sleepers before painting to ensure all the sleepers blend in. This photo shows how much different the turnout is to an American one which is usually created with Tim's fixtures and looks miles better than the Peco Large radius code 55 turnout. The turnout I have built here is a B8 and will be the smallest turnout I will use on any layout. My other fixtures allow me to build C8, C10 and D10 turnouts too so I'm well covered for the future. The lighting isn't great but you can just see the subtle overhang of the class 57 on the curved road of the turnout. This is acceptable to me for a scenic section but I will likely use B8's exclusively in my fiddle yards. This turnout was a rush job but I reckon if I take my time and am careful with the solder I can build a whole turnout in around an hour. I have ran a few wagons and locos with 2mm finescale wheels through this test turnout and they are as smooth as silk. There isn't a bump over the frog and the travel over the switch blades is flawless - Something I never quite managed building by hand! I am currently waiting on an order of rail from the 2mm Association shop which should hopefully arrive tomorrow. If all goes well, I will be demoing these fixtures and tools on the DEMU/Scottish Modellers stand at Model Rail Scotland over the weekend. If you fancy a little look come and have a chat.   8. Good evening, Since my last post I have put together a second (and final) baseboard for this little project. A templot plan has been glued down to it and will be ready to lay the rest of the track work later on in the week. Here is the layout which is 2.6m long and 32cm wide. I will be adding another strip of plywood to the first board so it mirrors the width of the second board. Each board will have a basic fiddle yard at the end of it and will accommodate 3-4 trains.   9. I've spent this afternoon trying to draw up a plan for the new layout. I'm waiting for PPD to come back with an etch for the narrow gauge Ruston and felt like an afternoon in front of the PC. Having received the structural engineers report which means that hopefully we should soon get a quote from the builder I hope this isn't tempting fate. I started off taking a scan of the OS map into Templot and then trying to draw track over it. This is an interesting task as I'm sure that what you think must be the positions of railway features, particularly things like the ends of points aren't always easy (or possible) to spot. It seemed a much better plan to generate the overall lines of the track and then try to fill them in getting Templot to sort of the geometry. The result is a track plan, over a map with some kind of theoretical baseboard edge around it. I've curved the line so that it will go around the room, planning to use the over-bridge as a scenic break on the right hand side. At the left hand end the line curves over the bridge and then I intend to put a level crossing in. There was one just off the map which made for some interesting signalling as the gates had a lever frame which slotted the distance signal and the starter at that end of the station. I've also made a few bits of 'selective compression', I've twisted the goods yard slightly and also pulled the little stream on the right hand side a little closer to the station to try and keep it relative to where it crossed the tracks. I'm also trying to work out how to get a little siding down to a fictitious mill. The plan being that it will give me a 'flight of fancy' whereas the rest of the layout can be firmly based on Clare. I had a question for the prototype experts on the Stour valley line. Clare had a coal siding (originally a couple with more than one merchant). How was coal dealt with? I've not seen any pictures of mineral trains on the line so was the coal just brought in and shunted with the pickup goods? (talking early 50's) Finally - in other shocking news I had fun putting together a Rumney models underframe. This is the clasp brake version which I thought would go nicely under a Parkside shocvan. Trouble was that all the photographs I could find on Paul Barlett's site showed that the clasp brake versions were all on BR Plywood bodied vans, while the Parkside model is a planked version. Cue lots of fun with filler, scrapers and fibre-glass brushes. The chassis is so nice that I'm not quite convinced the body does it justice. Still I'll try adding rain-strips and transfers and see how the body looks when it is suitably weathered. One thing I did notice from the photographs was that the vertical stripes indicating the shock absorbing were rarely anything other than hand painted. David
  10. Thanks Tom. I laid the sleepers individually as the templot plan sleeper spacing was slightly wider than the spacing on each easitrac sprue. I doubt I'll do it again as it was a nightmare threading the rail onto them!
  11. Good evening, Just before Christmas I bought the wonderful Farish 4 CEP in blue/grey livery. A superb model and I'd wanted to get one ever since I had a play with BCN Pete's model on his Paddock Wood bay layout. I decided to buy some concrete sleepers and some flat bottom rail form the 2FS shop and set out to produce a mini diorama for the unit and hopefully run it. My wife has suggested on several occasions to model something more local alongside my Cornish work in progress layout so I drew up a plan for West Worthing (one of my local stations) using templot on top of a Google Earth printout of the area. This was then printed and the first half was glued on to a 1.2m long board topped with plywood. The sleepers were then glued down individually (I must be bonkers!) and then spray painted a concrete colour. Then the rail threaded and painted. The third rail was then added using BCN Pete's technique from his Paddock Wood layout. I decided to use bullhead rail for the third rail the width seemed to mirror the prototype quite well being wider than the main running rails themselves if this make sense. Quite pleased with how it's turned out so far. Anyway, Back to the pub for my Cornish layout now! Best regards, Jeremy
  12. Martin Your last paragraph is indeed a fair comment of my head long rush to make Templot part of my tool kit. This is partly due to the fact that I already have the Peco Finescale track to emulate the track diagram (in condensed form) so it was easy for me to simply start learning Templot on a project I am already familiar with. My successful single slip was made starting from scratch, outside of The grand design. But it did not give me the potential space saving I am looking for. I will keep trying to fit the double slip into the nine foot space. As to Illustrator, I have been using this software for about 15 years so it is an established part of my tool kit. i have noticed that WINE has chosen Windows XP for me. Is that what other Mac users use for Templot? Best regards, Paul
  13. Hi Paul, You didn't need to do that. Templot can do all that and more. Click the sketchboard button, top left: Also, the platform can be included as part of the track template and doesn't need to be added afterwards. Like so many others, you have tried to start by designing your actual layout, instead of learning the software first on some scrap track plans. Knowing all the things Templot can do makes it much easier to create what you finally want. The double-slip could easily have been made to fit, if that's what you wanted. regards, Martin.
  14. Well, this is not the end, but it is certainly the beginning. Using Templot has been interesting, challenging, rewarding and at times frustrating. The latter is due to my being on the steepest part of the learning curve. I have not given up on the double slip, though the current design is actually more prototypical. The problem is, by sticking to OO-SF criteria, I have had to extend the basic area from 9'x2' to 10'x2' whether I use the double slip or not. This is not a space problem dictated by any particular room dimension, but rather one that defeats my hope to have the scenic layout on three 3'x2' boards. Now one of them will be 4'x2'. I have taken my Templot output and imported it into Illustrator in order to superimpose a rough outline of the various buildings (the actual models are not with me at the moment, in fact they are in France, which is where the layout will be constructed). Here it is: The curved entry is prototypical but greatly exaggerated. This will allow the "fiddle yard" to be connected after an additional scenic corner piece. This will also accommodate the headshunts on the "main" line and the siding. So the complete layout will be L shaped, probably 12'x6'. The track will most likely be built using Code 83 FB nickel silver rail soldered to copper-clad sleepers. The rails will come from old Shinohara track I bought in the 1980s. Strictly speaking the rails should be BH but here the question is not one of accuracy but expediency. The next step for this layout will start when I get back to France. The baseboard frames will be assembled, some Sundeala (or its French equivalent) will be applied and the print out of the track plan will be used to set out the sleepers. Meantime I might have a little side project - a scale plan of Stratford-on-Avon Old Town on Templot - which would keep me very busy! Edit: delete second attached file in last paragraph.
  15. Hi, I can't be sure from your screenshot, but I think you have the Y-turnout in the yard with a regular-type V-crossing. It needs changing to a curviform V-crossing for best results. This is often the case for turnouts with negative curving (contraflexure) when they are not part of a crossover. The setting is at real > V-crossing options > curviform V-crossing. Martin.
  16. 24 hours later and a new Templot arrangement is complete, following my studying up the instructions to build a single slip from a diamond crossing. But I have yet to fill in the details to make the double slip as the instructions suggest it is best to leave modifying the crossing until later. I have taken that suggestion to heart! But it does make sense not to plough straight into the difficult bits, honestly. So here is the new plan, utilizing a future double slip where the crossing is now: This now should allow the placement of both goods shed and cattle pens as well as providing space for the coal yard. I feel the plan could do with a bit of tweaking. Although the main line into the platform looks straight on the Ordnance Survey map, photos show a slight curvature beyond the end of the platform. Likewise the sidings appear to be quite rough in places, though whether I will model this aspect remains uncertain. But there is certainly progress being made.

Now, I am sure there are lots of improvements to be made and I think there may also be a few hidden errors, but I am beginning to understand Templot and have drawn up my initial interpretation of the branch line terminus layout. The branch line enters the station at upper left (the lower track is a headshunt) with the single station platform top right. The release loop has an end loading dock at the right hand end. The third track down passes through the goods shed and also serves the cattle loading dock. The bottom siding serves the coal merchants and gas company. The short spur to the left was to the small engine shed. The layout is 9ft by 2ft in three 3ft by 2ft boards. Plus a fiddle yard. As drawn there is not enough space for both cattle loading dock and goods shed, but there could be if the two turnouts circled in red were to be collapsed into a double slip. I know that double slips are not a feature of small, insignificant branch lines, but this has to be the one major concession I need to make. The problem is, I have yet to work out how to make a double slip in Templot!   21. I have been using Templot for quite a while on my iMac without any issues (running under Wine). Whenever Templot detects that it needs to install a later copy of itself, it does so without any issues too. I am currently using OS Mavericks by the way, I am thinking of updating to OS Yosemite but have held off in case I get any issues with the non-apple software (like Templot) that I use - a quick read of the reviews for Yosemite indicates that people have encountered problems in this area.   22. Although I already have Peco track for Shipston, I am slowly but surely moving toward a better looking OO-SF look and design. Several years ago I used Templot for a while, working under a PC emulator on my Mac (I have been a Mac user since 1992), but the emulator was expensive to upgrade and really didn't seem to be that reliable. Templot fascinated me in that it appears to have a steep learning curve for those of us who have done a lot of CAD and vector based drawing on computers. This is because it has what could be called artificial intelligence based on the inherent design of points and switches. It controls the mouse rather than the other way round, might be one explanation for what it does. The ability to plot out accurate templates for building custom track is the end product. Which means that Templot and self made track would be a very good option for Shipston. Back in the 1970s I made quite a lot of track using bullhead rail and PCB sleepers. So I asked a few questions on the track laying forum and got some strange answers. The reason for this was that I had asked the question of where I could source "PCB sleepers". The answer was that they are not called that, they are "copper clad sleepers". Well, so they may be today, but all those years ago they were made of printed circuit board, which, of course, happens to be copper clad fiberglass. The PCB term continues to be used in North America to this day. So, where do we go from here, you might ask? I have a Mac, so how can I use Templot? Happily Martin Wynne came up with a solution which did not involve either me buying a Windows machine or him porting Templot over to OSX! I had never heard of WINE, WINEBOTTLER or CrossOver, but these are the inexpensive solutions for running some (not all) Windows software on a UNIX based operating system (Linux or OSX). I have downloaded a 14 day free trial from CrossOver and also have the updated Templot2. So far, so good, Templot runs very nicely under WINE. All I have to do now is climb the relatively steep learning curve and design the track layout in Templot. Retirement is proving to be a very busy time!
  23. Evening all As I've mentioned in previous blog postings, the MRC is running a layout challenge that limits the builder to a board of 4 foot by 1 foot. I'm using this as an excuse to start my new Irish Broad Gauge project. The layout will be as simple as one can get with only one line and no points. When finished, it will be extended to form a more complete layout, buts that not going to be for quite some time. It's based on a long siding from my imagined Westport-Roonagh line (see one of my earlier blog postings) down to the sea at Old Head. It was originally going to be based around the pier that does exist at that location but I decided against this in the end as I don't think 4x1 is enough space to portray the structure realistically. Instead, the layout will very much be an 'end of a siding' affair running along side the country road to pier. I've spent today marking out the plan on my nice little 4x1 board. I made some quick templates on Templot (I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it now) and laid them out. This is quite a good way of seeing how the finished thing might look. I've tried to give the track a gentle curve rather than having a straight diagonal across the board. This looks quite pleasing to my eye and I'm satisfied enough with the plan that I will hopefully start building the trackwork before the end of the month. I need to get hold of something to use as underlay before this can start however (anyone ever tried Mounting Board??) Attached are a couple of photos of the current state of play. You might spot what's left of Sandhurst in the background. I'd be lying if I said I shed a tear taking it apart (see my thread for discussion on THAT subject!) Nestor
  24. I read your intention of modelling in 21 mm finescale with interest, as I was involved with one of the best Irish layouts by the late Tony Miles- Adavoyle Junction. You can find plenty of photos of Adavoyle on the internet mostly by Martin Wynne (of Templot fame) as it was his collaboration with Tony and a few of "the friends of Adavoyle" who built all the trackwork on the layout. A testament to the trackwork was given by Tony Wright when he wrote that "Adavoyle Junction ran on finescale track at Triang speeds!" Hope this some help to you. By the way there has been many articles in the model railway press over the years so if you can find the refernces you will have some good reading - if nothing else
  25. Mike, I have modified my original diagram taking on board your comments, the revised diagram is shown below. I've also put a Templot diagram of my whole layout so the you can better see the distances involved (each green square is 6" (~ 75'0" to scale). Although I have added a ground signal on the Up Loop to Goods Loop divergence, would there have been another one on the Main to Up Loop (the one with the FPL)? Thank you for your help. Ian
