  1. You don't necessarily need temporary switches to test your trackwork. You could use "Suzie's Method" of wiring the turnouts: Instead of linking the closure rails to the stock rails under the turnout itself, take droppers from the closure rails down through the board. Then you have the choice underneath to either link remake the links to the frog (as the turnout was supplied) or to link them permanently to the stock rails, as is common practice. You can change those connections at any time after the track has been laid and so, at first for the purposes of testing wire the closure rails to the frog so that the turnout itself switches the frog polarity and then later, when you know it all works, wire them to the stock rails and install frog polarity switches. Another advantage is if a frog switch fails in the future you can quickly get the affected turnout working again by changing back to self-switching. I have used this two-stage method and it was very useful. There's more about "Suzie's Method" here: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/109951-electrofrog-point-isolations/&do=findComment&comment=4173720
  2. This advice is contrary to @Suzie's method and may be confusing in light of the recent conversation. Suzie says cut the links and bring droppers from the switch rails through the baseboard so that the links can effectively be remade under the baseboards. You can then choose to wire the electrical switching of the frog either the same way as the factory turnout, using the point blades, or using an external switch. And most importantly you can change it without having to rip the turnout up. And critically, you MUST cut the links under the turnout if you ever intend to switch the frog via an external switch. If the links are still intact when an external switch is installed then the frog will be switched by two different circuits and you may momentarily get a dead short if they don’t move at exactly the same time. Suzie’s method allows the links to be cut, the turnout to be permanently installed and frog switching method to be changed at a later date without any risk of momentary shorts.
  3. Ooph! You'll be going DCC next! Re. turnout modifications: You might like to consider "Suzie's method", which gives you little bit more flexibility once the track has been laid. (https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/search/&q=suzie's method&quick=1)
  4. Yes I had to source some special 10mm M2.5 screws to fix the motors to my 9mm board. The first lot I bought through Amazon were of Chinese origin and they were so soft as to be useless. So then I went to a British company and bought some stainless steel screws which are much better. Since driving two motors from the same output on the Megapoints board worked so well, I've just reconfigured the system to have just 4 turnout controls: 1. Entry-Exit crossover (trailing) 2. P2-P1 crossover (facing) 3. P2-P3 crossover (facing) 4. Pilot Spur turnout. This is more realistic than individual point control and means that it's less likely to run into the back of a set of points set against you (and thus short the system out). There are still some routes where this is possible and I’ll have to think about some sort of interlocking if I want to completely prevent it. So, the next jobs are to take all the springs out and to change the turnouts over to the "modified" state: permanently powered blades and frogs switched by the MP1s. (Thanks to Suzie's method.)
  5. First, apologies re Cobalt, what they said was 'Additionally:If the DCC system already has some rectifier parts inside it, as many do, when it is fed by a regulated DC power supply, these diodes have NO added work to do.' My underline' goo.gl/DyZQLt is a the whole article. It's worth a read re the remarks on the Lenz and others' power input side. I'll give the DC PSU a try tomorrow, it's only 2amp so I guess it's well under any limits with only one loco involved. I'm trying to understand Suzie's method but Suzie has given me good advice in the past so I'll give it a try. Thanks to all! Edit: didn't see Suzie's second post until after I sent this one. Thanks again for the extra info Suzie
  6. Hi David, You have to switch the frog one way or another and so the method of switching doesn't really affect the answer to your question. If you do the live point blades modification then you have to switch the frog externally. The rails beyond the frog can either be electrically connected to the frog and take all power from it, or have their own power feed and be insulated from the frog. Aside: If you think you might like to use the point blades to switch the frog now but leave open the option to use an external switch later, then there's a simple method here: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/109951-electrofrog-point-isolations/&do=findComment&comment=4174997 (Read further back for Suzie's written explanation.)
  7. The frog will always be switched. No one is suggesting leaving the frog and the V rails unpowered. Suzie’s method just allows someone to choose how the frog is switched after the turnout has been installed, with one of those options being to rely on the point blades in just the same way as the turnout works out of the packet. So there’s no need for an external switch in the simplest case and the turnout does not need to be removed to later change the switching method. But to avoid having to remove the turnout later the links must be cut before installation. It’s simple and very clever - no more difficult to do than the usual recommended best practice for modifying electrofrog turnouts. I wish I had done it on my little test layout. Dave gets it.
  8. here's a shot inside the kitchen - the brass guard rail finally got fitted across the window. Brass mesh got fitted to the heater box and the heater box was installed using the old trusty diluted PVA. I love how it dries clear and leaves no tell-tale signs behind. Very useful stuff indeed. Here's my patented method for ensuring the tables all sit at the correct height - the top of the "T" fits into a slot I machined into the resin tabletops Like so... and my method for ensuring all the table legs look the same ('ish) - I'm using cocktail sticks as table legs and I found that the taper varied somewhat with some sticks being sharper than others. By dropping the cocktail stick into a small hole, I can then razor saw the tip off the stick, knowing that the diameter at the cut will be the same on all legs. But then I found that my patented method wasn't up to scratch. Putting the leg in the middle of the T-bar thing made the leg sit too far back from the table edge. Easy fix though - instead of drilling a hole in the center, I just cut a small V groove into the front edge which placed the table leg further forward. I know it's hard to see here from this angle, but the table on the left has the leg too far back, while the table on the right has the leg much further forward and looks much better to my eyes at least. Time for another dry fit. I placed the chairs on 5mm high blocks to see how everything looked. ... and wasn't happy! Dammit! The chair backs are too high. When I compare to my reference photos the chair backs only come up as far as the center of the marquetry star thingy. Here they are almost obscuring it. Bother. I'm not gong to all the bother of spending hours on fine marquetry if you can't see my handiwork now am I? I followed Suzie's dimensions for the chair so I don't know where things went skewy. Time for a rethink. I've already made these chairs twice and don't fancy gong through all that palaver again. I did try cutting down the back of one chair and it was quite straightforward, however, getting the curves of those 'pleats' (wrong term I know) to flow nicely around the top edge just wasn't possible. But hey! I got a printer - what if I printed one? So I did - with a couple of small changes. Fast forward a day and here we are fresh out of the printer with support structure still in place. Remove the supports and things are looking promising While I was on the computer doing the chair CAD work, I thought I may as well have a go at a pair of curtains I was going to try and make them from material, honest - had a plan and everyfink - but trying to get a hold of material these days is a bit difficult what with masked marauders everywhere buying it up for their masks. Here we have a pair of freshly printed curtains. Would you believe those curtains are only 0.3mm thick? Piece it all together - still got a lot of clean up to do on the parts yet though as you can tell by the chair backs. That's looking a lot better. The chair height is about right now, with the chair backs just below the middle of the star thingy. I could maybe add another millimeter to the chair leg. I don't think that would look out of place. A view from above and a more standard view. Okay, I know some folks may consider it cheating what with just printing the chairs, but after having made about forty of the over the last few years I think I've paid my dues in the chair making department so printing them isn't a complete cop-out (I hope). There's still a few tweaks to be made here and there. The curtains may be a millimeter or so too long so I'll figure out if I'm going to take the hem up a tad or not. I may just leave them as is. The tables are more problematic though - being resin there are loads of little pin holes everywhere. I thought I had taken care of them but when I sprayed them today I found that I hadn't. I'm going to try dipping them in floor polish and see if that fills up the pin holes. I'm starting to wonder if I need to fit the other side frame as I need that to get the position of the bathroom and the dinette - but I know once that is in place it is going to be very difficult to work inside - but it may be the only way to get things done. Things will probably slow down over the next few days as work is taking priority and I have a bunch of printing to do. Stay safe and keep away folks!
  9. Note your point about using surace motors. I've been using Suzie's method to wire medium radius electrofrogs but I have a few places where I cannot get access for motors below the boards due to bracing or access issues. I have tested using the surface mounted PL-11 and Gaugemaster PM20 but there is another issue. Crossovers using heel-to-heel of the medium electrofrogs give approximately 50mm centres . But if you have multiple lines like a I do in my sidings, all with 50mm centres, there is insufficient space between the lines for the surface motors. There is just about enough space if one trims some track sleepers but the motor arm does not move freely and sometimes fails. At the moment, I'm considering putting a piece of flexitrack between the heels but it needs to be about the length of a Peco ST-202 and it kind of spoils the sidings spacing effect, not to mention I'm limited on the total width of the sidings. Anyone had this problem and a neat solution?
  10. I've fixed the pointwork down and I've been able to cut the rails over the baseboard joint so that the box can be folded up again. (I hadn't dared to move it since I glued the copper clad sleepers over the joint in the new year!) Here's a brief catch-up: I modified the turnouts and wired them using @Suzie's method. Amazingly the sleeper spacing I had measured for the copper clad sleepers worked out pretty well: The collected works of Charles Dickens holding the track down while the glue dries: Rails soldered to copper clad sleepers (I'll tidy it up later) and cut using a diamond slitting disc: And at last, I can release the catches and fold the boxes up again so that I can work on the electrics. That's the next stage.
  11. OK, I see. If the frogs on the 3-way asymmetric turnout are not electrically connected to the closure rails as supplied AND IF they require external switches to power the frogs (that is to say if they can't be switched by the blades alone without causing shorts as John R was trying to work out above), then yes, Suzie's method doesn't apply and you may as well solder wires across the rails. Sorry, I'm not familiar with the 3-ways.
  12. Hi Robert, We are talking about Suzie's method of NOT soldering across the rails but instead bringing droppers for each rail through the baseboard so that the connections can be made underneath. We just need to be sure exactly which links to cut underneath the turnout and where to solder the droppers to because there are two gaps in the webbing of the 3-way - one below frog 1 and the other below frog 3. I'm sure @John ks's drawing shows the basis for this but I haven't got time to check right now - got to make a living to be able to afford the railway! Edit: Apols: @John ks Didn't do a drawing for a 3-way turnout.
  13. Haha. Thanks for your input everyone. Just when I told Suzie I thought I’d got it! My plan had been to proceed as follows: a. Cut the closure gap to isolate the frog. Do not wire the switch rails directly to the stock rails but instead take dropper wires down below (one +ve, one -ve). Feed these separately to terminals on a terminal block. Connect the other side of the block to two wires going to the solid unfolded frog wire. As the blades move they simultaneously power the frog and switch it’s polarity. I’m no better off than out-the-box but it’s an interim step to avoid tearing everything up if/when I decide I’m not happy with any stuttering/stalling while slow running my 0-6-0s over the points in the sidings. b. If/when I decide to go the full way, I reverse the power direction on the droppers. I can either connect them to the stock rails underboard or I can run power directly from the controller, one +ve, one -ve to the droppers This then feeds the switch blades area directly, no longer relying on good contact with the stock rails, and without having to tear up everything to wire the closure rails to the stock rails with wire directly. The frog is then powered and its polarity switched via a standard add-on switch to the PL-10e or something like the GM500 if I have to do it above board using something like the Peco PL-11 or Gaugemaster PM20. I hope this makes sense but I may well have missed the point (excuse the pun). Funnily enough, even if I've got this right, I still feel it a bit odd in part (a) to solder two separate wires to the solid frog dropper, one to the +ve and one to the -ve contact on the terminal block. I know that only one can be live according to which way the point is set, but it somehow doesn’t feel right and maybe there’s a better method? By the way, I suspect everyone thinks I should stop messing about and just go the whole hog and do the full conversion straight away - I’ll think about that!! Regards, Dave
  14. Hi Suzie Many thanks for taking time to add a reply to my question. TrainController, I like the look and feel of the software, signalling in the software, made me wonder a little as I only saw one aspect, so with 4 aspect signals you wouldn't now which was Y or YY unless you watched that signal closely. I have not got deeply into signalling, my time so far has been setting up every block and turnout to allow trains to run spontaneously, I appreciate I am only scratching the surface at day 8 of use, but 30 days can go so quickly. Gold package would be what I am looking at but it has an hefty price tag so I need to know of the disadvantages with the software, that have to be some. So far the only things that concern me regarding TrainController is i) it is German, ii) it is pricey, iii) signalling, iv) the way EU has responded and the way our government is handling Brexit. The software is good at showing the automation possible on screen, but I feel this may not be the case on the layout, without sensor control. In particular I noticed when having two engines on one track, and speeding up the back one to catch up to the first one, it did protect the block of the first one, but the speed dial of the second one remained on maximum even when the speed was lowered to stop the engine entering the block in front. This may be because I was using software only and didn't have the Hornby Elite connected, I do not know at this stage, the new layout will not start until early next year. RocRail, a good reply I think 'works reasonably when you get the hang of it'. I did look at this before TrainController, but didn't spend long enough with it, may be I should have another look . Hornby, what can I say, their loco detection was announced six years ago as coming, then a few years later after generating interest as coming soon, then all went quiet. I understand they are to make an announcement around 7 January, with an update coming for RailMaster, not just bug fixes, and also about LD so it will be interesting to see what they say, when it is coming, have they changed their initial method of detection and of course what price will it be. I do want train automation, I do want a sensor system as I feel it is the only way to achieve accurate stopping of locos. My issue at present is knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each to get the best, most affordable system for each. Thanks again for taking time to reply.
  15. As Suzie said you can do it with Peco PL15 mounted on a Peco motor. I have been using this method on 2 different reversing loops for a few years now. It operates fast enough that you should see no interuption in running or sound. When I first set it up it took me all of 5 minutes to work out the wiring using a multimeter.
  16. Reading of the likely consequences of a dalliance with dockside ladies, I'm reminded of a quick diagnosis method they used in the RN. Instead of examining the afflicted matelot they simply asked which nightclub he'd been to, opened at photo album at the relevant page and asked him to point out the gal. Whether the photos were labelled Syphilis Suzie, Gonorrhea Girty, Hepes Hattie....I don't know!

hi Chaz sorry if I misunderstood. You can, of course, put your own KA capacitors in your loco in place of the ESU part, but I doubt it is worth it. The KA are supplied from the diodes that supply the electronics in the decoder; as I understand it there are + & - rails within the decoder, powered by a bridge rectifier from the track and the KA keeps these at a potential for a period of time dependent on the capacitor values, and the loads (typically motor is biggest, then sound, then lights). The decoder uses further switching components to drive the various loads, from these rails. There are a number of people on RMWeb who know far more than I do and who would, I'm sure help, if my thoughts don't sort it. You might try to contact Suzie and (Andrew) Crosland. The KA should not make any difference to your motor performance per se, and from what you are saying above it is absolutely doing what it's there to do, it is keeping the motor (and/or sound) running for a short period when the loco is not getting any supply. So I believe the issue is with performance - and the rattle / jerky behaviour suggests that the pwm and load compensation is not working correctly. Assuming the decoder is not broken (a safe assumption I believe) I think you should start by looking at these; I don't have a manual for the V3.5, but in the V4 manual, it starts at page 46, section 11. Just to confirm my thoughts, you might try to turn off compensation and check that the locos run at least smoothly. Read CV56, make a note of it, and then set it to zero. this will disable your load compensation and it should then not jerk or rattle at all. If so, then you can try some of the settings (or the auto setting method that I already suggested) that they give in the manual. HTH Simon
