  1. Dear All, I'd just like to publicise the Chiltern Model Railway Association's Interactive Modellers Workshop later on this year: With an accompanying IMW Facebook Event There will be a number of experts attending (subject to availability) and there will be a wide range of topics covered both in tabletop demos and group talks. Please let me know if there are any general subjects you might be interested in, as there is always room for more.

With the world of railway modelling expanding every day the potential skills involved are growing all the time. The Chiltern Model Railway Association’s Interactive Modellers Workshop is here to help. We have assembled a group of experts in one place to advise and help you. Ever wondered how they manage to fit speakers in such a small space? How to solder wires to the track? What skills 3D printing involves? Or even how one crafts scenery together? We are bringing together experts on Kit Construction, Electronics, Baseboard construction, Scenic design, as well as insurance, valuation and traders. We can help with the answers to these, and many other, questions. With a small number of layouts and trade stands it is a relaxed atmosphere in which you can sit down and have one to one conversation and, hopefully, solve some problems and learn some new skills.
  3. I have just spent a marvellous weekend at Missenden Abbey learning how to weather my stock, both steam era and diesel/electric. I don't recollect seeing anything about this course anywhere on RMWeb and wonder why that might be. If anybody is keen to learn how to weather their stock then in my opinion there is no better way to find out. The accommodation is good, the food is good and the company is excellent. I found a wealth of knowledge on all the subjects you could think of regarding railway modelling, and came away newly inspired to progress with my own layout. Techniques used were airbrushing, weathering powders, dirty washes, designers gouache and dry brushing. Materials included enamel and acrylic paints, opaque washes and translucent filters. Equipment buying advice was extremely helpful, from the right type of airbrush to use for which method right down to what to use to support a vehicle when weathering one side. Has anybody else been to one of these weekends? I'd be interested to see how useful any of the other subjects being taught had been to the student. I had the opportunity to walk around other groups and see what was being done, ask questions and discuss techniques and materials. I have included photographs of a Class 37 and milk tank that I completed during the weekend and would be pleased to have people's comments on them. I think I should go on a photography course next!
  4. Job's Modelling

    Up side down

Everything got upside down One So, we made our plans. Then my wife had a serious fall in the bathroom and insured her back badly. Her recovery will take some time. The Billy cabinet has now to wait for a while. But that is now problem. Two I want to thank everyone who gave me useful information for the design of my Billy plank. I already started with making a new plan. Three One of the advices was to buy the excellent book Modelling Grassland and landscape detailing from Gordon Gravett. I also bought Creating the rural scene – A guide for Railway Modellers and Diorama Model Makers from David Wright. When I browsed the books, I noticed that there was still a lot to learn for me. So, I will go back for now to the building of small dioramas. In that way I can try out the several techniques I want to use for my Billy plank diorama and built some rural scenes. In this way I can support my wife with her recovery and do some technique developing modelling. Kind regards, Job

  6. Looking for a way to teach basic electrical ideas to my child. Does anyone have any suggestions to teaching aids? I have seen snap circuits but wondered what else was out there. Thanks for any ideas.
