Interiors for buildings in OO/HO scale

Recommended Posts

This is not a topic for the pros and cons of whether or not to put interiors into your buildings ... this is just to showcase peoples work and swap tips on how to source/modify parts for interiors.

I model in HO ... here is an interior I've just completed .... a young woman (circa 2005) is putting her suitcase back on top of the wardrobe after returning from a holiday.

The master at shop interiors was, without a doubt, Dave Rowe.

When he built the high street for his famed Axminster layout he even carved all the shoes for the shoe shop out of matchsticks in 00 ! - and not to mention the little girl actually skipping and the gent smoking a cigarette ! Then of course, there was his stunning "Under Milkwood" and if you visit Peco's Modelrama you will see a Spanish themed layout that he and his wife, Shirley Rowe, built together where the sun actually rises, arcs then sets. A definite must see.

This guy, and a good friend of mine at the time, was a mechanical genius but who one day just suddenly stopped modelling explaining to me that "There's more to life than just cutting up sheets of plastic and sticking it in a glass fronted cabinet "

Cheers.

Here is my small supermarket interior (circa 2005) .... still a few more bits to add, some bottles on the shelves and one more figure.

But am waiting for parts from Preiser, so on to the next one and will come back to this later.

lovely looking model, only comment - the aisles are far too wide for any small supermarket that I've been in :-)

Fair point .... but not a lot I can do about it now!

However, this thread is not supposed to all be about ME ... is no-one else doing interiors ?  Let's see other people's work please .....

I do interiors for some of my buildings but have never really photographed them, and now the buildings are sealed up I cant get a decent picture with the camera, I could probably get one of the inside of my goods shed but thats about all, I must remember to take the pics as I build in the future.

I have however the photograph of this interior as below, but I suppose its cheating a bit....

OK, here's some I did for my Station building, which is here:

All these are built as separate modules which then slot into the building.

First, the interior of the booking hall:

Then the booking office:

The Stationmaster's office:

Interiors you say?

With windows so large on these shops it's hard to find a way to not have interiors

This is without a doubt incredible. I've done a little bit of interior design on one or two buildings on my layout. One of which I'm proud of is a Chinese  take-away with interior lights and a few punters queuing up for there takeaways! Just gonna do something similar with some terraced houses.

The models on this thread are all excellent,

Here's my latest effort, modernisation of a Bachmann fast food restaurant to new style McDonalds.

There's not much room between tables, the resin walls were thicker than I thought so didn't leave much room! I hope it looks OK through the windows,

the serving counter at the back is just a photo of a real Mcdinalds.

they are supposed to be fast food boxes and  bottles on the tables, should have been big cups really!

The main issue with resin buildings is stopping the lights shining through the walls!

I eventually lined it with tinfoil.

Got to make some outside seating and fences for the front area now,

Thanks nhdesigns,

I am so pleased that you like my offering, I am afraid however that whilst the outcome was what I was after the 'modelling skill' required was fairly minimal.

Each of the items in the shop is an actual photo of the item printed at 180 dpi onto self adhesive label paper then stuck onto a piece of 0.015" clear styrene.

Most of them I was able to trim the styrene to the profile of the sofa etc. The 4 standard lamps in the background are all stuck onto 1 piece.

The main points I guess are finding suitable subjects on the Internet ( eg, era, alignment size etc ) getting them all to scale size ( normally I try to size them using the resolution rather than image size, increasing the resolution reduces the size generally ) and then moving them about until the scene looks 'right'.

If you look at the suite in the foreground you can see a line of the top edge of the styrene between the l/h armchair and the sofa (Damn )

In real life this building is viewed from about 3' anyway so the styrene is not obvious at all.

The photo below is taken from a different angle and you can see the general idea clearer having not had the other wall fitted yet.

This photo shows the rest of the block done in the same way ( and not finished either ! )

Just out interest the chap trying out the sofa in the original looks remarkably like Boris Karloff's, "Frankenstine's Monster", didn't know he lived in Wigan.

Cheers

Here's one that I was just putting together,

a disused small signal box

gallery_16311_3509_155957.jpg

its an adaptation of an LCC wooden kit wit the usual ratio interior, but then loads of stuff scattered in and PVA'd down.

gallery_16311_3509_82761.jpg

I was going for a soggy lino, wet leaves and fallen ceiling plaster look

gallery_16311_3509_161216.jpg

I was pleased with the look considering the time it took to achieve.

gallery_16311_3509_67382.jpg

Hope you like that one,

No-one will ever see it when I glue the roof on as it faces the back viaduct wall.

A lot of interior features are available for military modellers in both etched and resin. Items such as cutlery, spectacles and even a birdcage are made in etched nickel silver and many items of furniture in resin including 'white goods' and a complete bathroom right down to the loo brush and bog roll. These are all in 1/72 scale but fit in easily in 00 scale.
