Alcanman
My NCE Powercab is now 6 years old and has proved to an excellent purchase and very reliable. However, I've recently experienced an intermittant power problem and traced this back to the connector at the power panel end. I swopped the cable around, inserting the 'faulty' connector into the handset and all is well .. for now. I also noticed that the black outer cable appears to have shrunk back exposing the 6 coloured wires and causing stress on the wires, hence the intermittant fault. I was wondering if a repacement 6 wire flat cable with RJ-12 connector is available and where it can be sourced. Thanks, Mal
michaelp
Hello Mal, Not sure if this might help but the shop is only a few miles away at Cullercoats. https://www.esr.co.uk/ Michael Edited September 18, 2015 by michaelp
Alcanman
Thanks Michael. I presume the RJ-12 connector and cable has universal use and not exclusive to the NCE Powercab? Sorry, but I have little knowledge of electonics. Edited September 18, 2015 by Alcanman
michaelp
Sorry Mal but I couldn't say for sure. Michael
pitbull1845
I got mine from Ebay, you can specify the length too. Can't remember the sellers details though but I'm sure a quick search will come up trumps.

Guest
Hi, you could try one of these https://www.dccsupplies.com/item-p-102834/curly-cable-nce-power-cab-1-5m-6-wire.htm Nigel Seconded. Fair price, arrived next day too. Handy to have the curly lead as I found the original flat lead a little too long and kept tripping over the damn thing. pitbull1845
That's a good point Pete, I've had a few moments where I got caught by the wire. Reminded me a bit of the Empire Strikes back when the At-At's in the snow were being toppled...
Alcanman
Thanks guys. I've ordered the one on e-bay, much cheaper than I expected. Mal

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted September 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 29, 2020 Useful thread, chaps. I've had exactly the same issue as Alcanman,, with the wires emerging and an intermittent power drop. Now ordered a replacement.

Back in action, hopefully, tomorrow when I finish wiring my new layout.
RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted September 29, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 29, 2020 I've been putting up with the faulty one for a year or two but it finally got on my nerves long enough to prompt an internet search!

arff999
Hi Alcanman. Make sure the one you ordered has 6 cores and not 4, if its 4 its not going to work. John.

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted October 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2020 I got my cable today from DCC Supplies, as per the link above. I was a bit concerned that the fault might have turned out to be in the Power Cab, but it was indeed an intermittent break in the cable, and all's now good. I think I prefer the curly type of cable over the flat ribbon type as originally supplied as these always seem to end with a twist in them. 2
Theo
Digitrains in Lincoln sold me a new cable after exactly the same fault. It is any cable's weak point.

Flat one with 6 wires for Powercab use which is untidy, gets in the way, is often twisted and looks ugly. And the 4 wire curly cable which is much neater when used as a throttle. Nice to know that after market suppliers have created 6 wire curly cables.
arff999
DCC Concepts also do a 6 core RJ12 curly cable if you need to source one at any time Regards. John.
