I hope you don't mind another thread of photos, but I have a thing about buying job lots of slides at auctions/car boots etc.

Most have no details at all, although many locations seem familiar but my memory is going, so I need your help.

Is this Salisbury?

There are not that many 175 mileposts. If it is roughly the same time as the other two then could be Hambleton Jct just before the wires got there, but the bridge looks to be to old.

PS

175 from Paddington is plain line (Whiteball, St Fagins and a field north of Shrewsbury)

175 from Euston is Weaver junction which would be wired, or the outskirts of Chester.

175 from StP was on the closed bit off the MML north of Wath

175 from KX is Hambleton and Wakefield Westgate South Jct.

175 on the GC seems to be on the Met lines south of Aylesbury

Thanks Bomag for all those mileage points.

The loco is 47134 which was a Bath Road engine in those days, although that doesn't help much because they wandered far and wide.

The region in which this was taken may be straightforward, but actual location has baffled me.

It looks like a Midland style milepost, and 175 on the Midland from St Pancras was around Cudworth, according to http://www.foscl.org.uk/content/history/settle-carlisle-railway-mileposts

and Cudworth had multiple junctions, so that would be my 90% guess.

Edit - post 5, that is.

Edit 2: This flickr photo shows the general lie of the land at Cudworth, similar to your photo, but evidently not the same bridge:

Edit 3 (from the future, in 2019): More likely Moorthorpe, as per subsequent posts and an observation here: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/103405-jonnys-where-are-these-photo-album/&do=findComment&comment=3618668

It's definitely NOT St. Fagans on the SWML just west of Cardiff

The 175 MP is definitely Midland.

Could 58046 be somewhere around Burton on the Leicester triangle area?

Good call - there's a likely looking low bridge with crossing on google maps here: https://goo.gl/maps/qGgMyUcVzYR2  Cambridge Street Burton, with the bridge accessing the allotments in the triangle of lines there.

There's a signal in about the right place too. Pity Street view only goes the other side.

Bing maps agrees. http://www.bing.com/mapspreview?q=Cambridge+Street+Burton&mkt=en&FORM=HDRSC4&signedup=1#

Amazing stuff. That looks very convincing.

Thanks.

I don't know what the name of the church is, but the train is arriving at Exeter St David's.

The church is St Michael and All Angels, Mount Dinham.

St Davids Tunnel lies beneath and a little to the left as seen from this angle.

The houses are on Bonhay Road.

cheers

Good heavens, is it?

I would have thought the tracks had more use than those seem to have.

The track into platforms 3 and 4 does look very rusty.

I wonder if this picture was taken when major re-signalling or other trackwork was taking place?

47350 was named Scorpion from November 1991 to April 1999, but the St Davids station had been re-signalled earlier in 1985.

The river bridge at the south/west end of the station was renewed in October 1997, perhaps the picture was taken then?

Waterloo services were mostly worked by class 159s from  about 1992.

cheers
