I think you are right Stewart, as there was a brickworks there (at least on the 1950s 1:25000). 

 

61569 was an Ipswich loco, and so would be on its way home. I can't quite read the number of the L1 (except that it is 677-something).

This section of line from Newmarket to Cambridge across Coldham's Common has an interesting history.  When first built it ran directly into Cambridge station in an arrangement that gave many operational difficulties as you can see from the 1888 map below.

In 1896 the GER moved the junction a mile or two northwards to the alignment across Coldham's Common shown on the map below.  This is the line shown on the photographs.

The remains of the first alignment into the station were still in place in 1911 as can be seen in this photo taken from the excellent book Great Eastern Railway Engine Sheds Part Two, ISBN 0 906867 487.

And here is a 1974 view of the 1896 curve looking towards Newmarket with a passing Ely to Cambridge service.
