Review in latest Model Rail states they ran it on 1st and 2nd radius curves with ease and also 2nd radius points. It did de-rail at high speed well in excess of what would be prototypical.

45mph max speed according to the wonderful etched plates on the red one....

but not worth the money sorry.

I couldn't disagree more. It is easily one of the most intricately detailed models we've ever seen. Goodness knows how many thousands of man hours went into these. Worth every penny. Buy one! You're only here once! =)

The crane must have been visiting the area for something else but ended up coming to the aid of a B4 at on Canute Road Quay, more pictures and bit of a review can be read here https://grahammuz.com/2019/12/21/the-Bachmann-45t-ransomes-and-rapier-steam-crane-arrives-on-the-quay/

Not sure what the lifting capacity would be at that range. In real Life the relieving bogie would probably been taken off  so that the crane could get on top of the job.

A couple of minor gripes with mine:

1 - The top manhole door came away easily with the magnet but the bottom one needed prising out.

2 - The wire operating the safe working load indicator broke after one down and up of the jib. got to work out what it should look like and how to fit it (or a replacement bit of wire) back together.

On mine the bottom door did get stuck on one occasion but did come out.

Not sure if these help with regards to the lift indicator:

Got both of my cranes today.

What a fantastic model it is and the detail is on another level. Took a while to arrive from announcement, but good things come to those who wait...

Top marks Bachmann.

Now, the challenge begins motorising them....

Popped over to the parents to give it a test, much like the H2 it has no problem getting around my ancient track, Bachmann you've done it again!

Shout out to the workers who spent goodness knows how many hours assembling the cogs and rigging hundreds, if not thousands of times over!

Controversy continues to abound over the retail price of what in 00 scale must surely amount to the most expensive non-motorised item of rolling stock ever produced for British outline.

Scrutiny of some of the excellent close up photographs posted recently does in fact do the model crane justice; such intricate and accurate detail has "moved the bar" considerably and cannot by definition be obtained at the sort of prices many of us would like to pay.

A steam breakdown crane, is not strictly necessarily for many modeller's scenarios (excepting, of course, an unfortunate pitch in!) and so we could happily operate our railways without one. Then those clever people at Bachmann dreamt up the idea of producing the R and R beauty and our operating needs were suddenly in question.

Do I have one? No.

Do I need one? Not strictly.

Can I afford one? Not at the present time, it is Christmas!

Will I eventually get one? Probably not, they'll be all gone by the time that decision is reached!

But for those who can afford to add this stunning model to their railway, I say well done, my hat comes off to you. Bachmann (and the others) continually strive to meet our ever rising standards and the cost of this must somehow be recouped in order to prevail.

In the meantime, no guesses to what could appear on my birthday list ???

I can imagine this model takes quite a while to assemble in the factory as those ropes are so complicated.

I'm not sure all the mechanisms needed to be workable especially the cylinders which could have reduced the price  as the only time you see them move is with the operating key in and using your hands

But it's what it is now and for anyone who is clever enough to motorised it it has to be a bonus although making the jib to slow maybe  quite difficult

.

I would think that a PARTIAL motorisation would be easily possible for those versions ( GWR ? ) with the large box on the jib runner truck.  That would just allow the crane to move itself on the track.  It could either have an on/off switch for DC operation, or a chip for DCC operation.

I would imagine that a mechanisms of the type and size of the Wickham Trolley could be used to allow the crane to self-propel, and maybe could fit in the crane underframe, but would need a disengagement mechanism for the crane to be hauled in the train.

I'm sure someone will come up with micro-motors and gears that could be placed in the crane boiler for hook and jib operation.

I would expect Bachmann will release the differing versions in different liveries - its stretching credibility too much at present with the current ones to be either still in the original livery or having travelled half the length of the country; one of DS1560 as it was in the mid 1960s would be welcomed albeit I dread to think what price such a future release would be listed at.

Took delivery of the Gordon crane yesterday. It’s been weathered by TMC and I’m over the moon with the results! Of course it’s very expensive but does this add as much to your layout as a sound chipped loco? In my opinion, yes.

Should I be disappointed that my 38-802 Crane (BR Black) was mailed in a bulk carton for 38-801!!!

Or is that taking 'original packaging' a bit to far :-p

Playtime tomorrow...!

First world problem perhaps ?

Some slightly odd weathering on that (eg the slewing ring would always be black/steely and shine) but it looks good. The Gorton gang however would not appreciate the grime, 122 was always bulled up (see http://www.bdca.org.uk/gallery/index.php/Ransomes-and-Rapier/ADRR95215-Album/scan0001).

Your second photo really highlights what a stunning job Bachmann did representing the slewing clutches and bevel gears, depicted with the postwar Ferodo lining upgrade fitted to some of the class.
