Lots of Industrials had removable cab backs so in the summer the crews would not be boiled. I have lots of photos of Lilleshall No 10 both with a cab back and without. I have noticed this on other Industrials.

Yes, quite right. Andrew Barclay offered the rear cab panel as an 'after sales' item. Some of these had sliding panels, to allow operation of the loco hand brake.

I believe sliding rear panels were also to allow for fire irons and tube brushes.

You are quite correct. However, the cab back used to foul the arc of the handbrake, hence the little door which you would sometimes see. The little arch-shaped door allowed access to the firebox, going straight across the footplate.

The safety valves on my Peckett have  been damaged. anyone know of any brass ( or a similar material )replacements?

I had a few of the old Hornby-Dublo ones that I passed on to another RMweb member.

And then there's R3640, "Niclausse", which I seem to remember being announced about the same time as "Lilleshall", definitely before "560".

Offering an Autumn 2019 delivery date is rubbing salt in the wounds a bit!

Boo. Pre-ordered for ages :-(

Same. It's pretty frustrating, as the announcement of that engine was one of the catalysts for me to start seriously looking at the concept of modelling the PLA.

Yes, "C" arrived and being run in to go along with "D" - though it may be a Christmas present, officially. Now I have to get started properly on that biscuit factory layout... I've had the parts for a while to build some more authentic Huntley & Palmers wagons, so should push on with those too. I built dumb-buffer wagon No. 1 of 1873 (Nos. 1-5), iron-framed No. 6 of 1889 (Nos. 6-10), and Gloucester 6-plank No. 24 of 1908 (Nos, 21-25). (The Hornby wagons are not far off the Gloucester wagons in basic dimensions and are numbered appropriately but I'll probably keep them as part of the box set rather than trying to upgrade them.) The POWSides transfer sheet, designed for the Gloucester wagons, gives one the digits 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 - the last two an oddity. But that means I can have another three dumb-buffer wagons, one more of the 1889 iron-framed wagons, six of the 1903 Birmingham C&W Co. batch*, and three more of the Gloucester batch before I have to start hunting around for transfers for 0, 3, 8, 9 to match!

*The snag is I've not seen a definite photo of any of these ten wagons, Nos. 11-20, so I'm not certain what they looked like, though I have an idea.

Here's "D" with the wagons built so far:

What a super little set, Hornby should do more of these and not much premium for it either.

Mine will have to wait for next week to run in as busy prepping for the NEC but here’s the presentation pack

Surely you have time to re-gauge this set for the Sud Harz layout at the weekend Paul?

A mini cutter to take out 1cm from the middle of each wagon, a little glue and weathering powder. Put the loco chassis in a mini vice to close the wheel spacing to 12mm and you’re done.

My Hornby Huntley & Palmers train pack (R3686; limited edition 0650 of 1000) has arrived. I was mainly interested in the wagons because too many private owner wagons are produced as singletons whereas, in reality, most were hauled around in multiples.

I’ll admit to being grumpy about the box; individual boxes being easier to stack, but I have to admit, Hornby has done a very nice job on it.

The locomotive C (831/1900) runs beautifully but the saddle tank has less sheen than the earlier produced D, which emphasises the contrast between the tank and the glossy cab side. I have to pretend that the tank has just been filled with cold water and is covered in condensation.

The wagons are interesting. Hornby’s No. 18 (R6814), which was produced earlier, had screw-on couplings. I prefer Bachmann couplings because they are neater, so I fitted Bachmann 36-025 Mk. 2 couplings, short screw-in minis. They required a little surgery to fit. I bought extra to fit to the train pack wagons but Hornby has fitted the latter with new chassis. Not only do they have NEM pockets but they are a better tooling, amongst other things, they have separate handbrake levers, unlike the moulded ones on No. 18, and metal rather than plastic buffers. I suppose Hornby uses longer hooks in order to allow for 1st. radius curves but why a centring mechanism on shorties? All in all, the wagons are a much better job than No. 18 but all four run together without visual jarring. From 3', the differences aren’t noticeable.

According to Railway Modeller, that young Mr Kohler from Hornby mentioned at the press launch that one of their Chinese factories had closed and this was why a number of locos [including Pecketts] had been delayed.

Two of them are still in the 2020 catalogue, along with the three shiny new ones:

R3640 - Willans and Robinson No. 882/1902

R3702 - Tytherington Stone Co, 'Daphne'

Four of them aint:

R3679 - Port of London Authority, No. 74

R3680 - Charity Colliery, 'Forest No. 1'

R3761 - Earl of Dudley's Round Oak Works (Open Back Cab), 'Lady Edith'

R3703 - S&KLR, (Open Back Cab), 'Bear'

Do we have any indication as to whether they might still slip through, or whether they might be held back for next year?

I'm interested in R3702 "Daphne" and Hornby's webpage says "Expected winter 2019-2020"

Perhaps the 4 that aren't in the catalogue are expected shortly so they left them out ?

Thanks
