RMweb Gold Savoyard Posted October 2, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2015 I went last year as I was staying overnight in Sydney before flying back home on the Sunday evening and I was looking for a model rail shop and found out the exhibition on that weekend so I got the train to Liverpool Station, got the free bus service on a preserved single decker and had a pleasant few hours at the show before doing some sightseeing in the afternoon. It was like being back home but with decent weather!

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 12, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2015 Hmm, missed this previously and it brings back some memories as I visited the Liverpool (NSW) show which happened to be on when I was working in Sydney in 2004, complete with a shuttle 'bus from the station and the station didn't look at all like Lime Street but just look at teh passengers - easy to tell there was a model railway exhibition on Clearly some Aus modellers had very good taste while others had worked hard to capture the local scene from the past (Warratoo Loop - fine scale) and in 7mm scale (Binnabi) An interesting contrast to UK shows of that time with far more folk taking pics of layouts (I thought if it's what the locals do .... why not?) and what struck me as relatively poor trade presence by UK standards for what was clearly a major show (but I did spend a few $Aus 'souvenir shopping' with Austrains). Fascinating experience and thoroughly recommended if you want to see how it's done on the other side of the world - if you happen to be there at the right time of course. PS for Ed - and I wasn't otherwise much impressed by that version of Liverpool although the station was pretty good (and the show of course). With due apologies to those talking about this year's show
SMR CHRIS
Mike said --: what struck me as relatively poor trade presence by UK standards for what was clearly a major show Not any more Mike too many now, but most are plonker RTR models to many little co doing one loco or wagon having the space of a layout Only one or two stands that you could get detail parts to do some real modelling at now. DavidB-AU
A lot of the cottage industry manufacturers and smaller traders have stopped going to big shows like Liverpool because it is so expensive. Cheers David
hartleymartin
Such a shame that the show has gotten too expensive for the small cottage industry type traders. Half the point of an exhibition is to let small traders display their wares.
SMR CHRIS
Martin I don't have an issue with all the company's that make models but the issue I have is some go to shows only have one model to sell have the space of a fair size layout and then stands like our Aus7 Demo get cramped into a little space. When we could make a really good display and be less cramped if the company with one wagon or a proposed model didn't have 4 meters of space for just a expesssion of interest to sign up modelers and take their money for years before the model arrives. But the hard facts are that they (companys) pay to be there and for a Exhibition organiser it makes good financial sense to have them there. The risk is that the family's that visit and pay at the door feel ripped off when a large proportion of stands are just models for sale when all they wanted to see was trains running by " the Entertainment they paid for at the door". You will always need the traders but do thay need to have a traders ally with booths for all the two bit suppliers to prevent the space wasters filing the halls with big signs and a little model that would have fitted on a card table. We may be getting to the stage that the traders could band together and host a trade day with just there wares for sale and a few modelling demos by the pros to show how it's done in the left over space. Surely any exhibition is about 'keeping the balance right'? To quote Don Rowland's articles on getting a balance of 'Big 4' owned wagons, bearing in mind the common user status of non specialised wagons, that was in force. Any exhibition that is biased too far one way, is going to disadvantage/disappoint someone.
