cheesysmith
Looking forward to the lima/Heljan loco, as having done some myself, it corrects the fault of the undersized lima bogies, and improves the look and the running of the model.
RMweb Gold Geep7 Posted March 31, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2020 Great job on the Class 73. Really must get on and do the same to my half-dozen Lima / Hornby ones.
5Bel
Hi All, The 33 and 73 are now ready for the pint shop. The roof clips on the 33 are small staples and the air horns on the 73 are nice brass turnings of unknown origin. I'm going to leave the moulded handrails on the 73 as they are quite fine and from normal distances once painted you won't be able to tell the difference. Hopefully I will be able to get into my garage this weekend to get the primer on. Cheers for now, Ian 2
5Bel
Hi All, The 33 is finished. I just managed to complete the painting before my Airbrush failed and stopped the progress on my other projects. It's painted with Railmatch Rail Blue and Warning Panel Yellow. Glazing is modified Heljan, the wipers are from MJT. Transfers are a mix from Nairnshire and Modelmaster. All in all I'm really pleased with the outcome, I'm particularly pleased with the roof mods and the paint finish. Its the first thing I've painted for over a year and now I have a replacement Airbrush I can finish the 73 and fleet of EMU's. Stay safe, Ian 6
RMweb Gold griffgriff Posted April 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2020 Real old school stuff and I love it. Are you going to ‘paint’ (I use a fine permanent marker rather than paint) in the window rubbers? it’s the only improvement I can suggest on what is an already excellent model. 5Bel
Hi All, The 73 is now finished. I decided not to replace the handrails with wire as the moulded on ones look OK from normal distances. The transfers are a mix of FMR, Nairnshire and Replica. The high position of the BR Arrows is taken from photos in 1979, by 1982 they were in the lower position. The grille mouldings on the Lima model still compare with models of today. I am really pleased with how it has turned out and have another couple in the loft to do. One of them has Hornby 4Vep bogie frames on and they look quite effective, just need to put steps and sandboxes on them. Griff, I touched in the window rubbers on the 33, it definitely helps with the overall appearance. A little bit of mucky brown around the underframes will really complete the models. I really should get the Manor lurking in the background painted!! Stay safe, 4
pete_mcfarlane
Nice work. I reckon the Lima moulded handrails look a lot more like the flat bar used on the prototype than replacement wire ones.
5Bel
Hi Pete, Thats the main reason I left them on. I managed to find some split pins of suitable dimensions for my 71. They have one side flat and are quite effective. Like a lot of useful things though I can’t find them now!! Cheers for now, Ian
