antyeates1983
Here are photos of the models entered into the modelling competitions at the 2mm Scale Association AGM on 3rd October 2015 in Bournmoor, County Durham. Thanks are due to Mick Simpson and Andy Carlson for guiding me in and assisting with the photography. You will see that many of the models are missing the names of their makers (owing to the anonymous nature of the competition). Please let me know the missing names and I will update the post! RMweb Premium 65179 Posted October 7, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 7, 2015 Another thanks for posting these from me. It's a shame I couldn't make it. Does anyone know whose work the B1 and J39 are? Simon
Alan P
Hi Simon I do not know who the B1 belonged to but the J39 was my latest creation which was just completed on the Friday evening. It has not been run in yet. Full marks to Anthony who did an excellent job on these photos. Its a nice collection. Unfortunately on the day the weather was dull and the lighting in the hall was not the best, making it difficult to see some of the loco detail until suplementary lighting was brought in. However his photos reveal more detail where he had arranged better lighting showing the high standard of many models. The very long high speed point on the Swinton layout cannot fail to impress and Lauries work on miniscule point rodding a sample being prepared in time for the meeting. A good day was enjoyed by all. 2mm Andy
Another thanks for posting these from me. It's a shame I couldn't make it. Does anyone know whose work the B1 and J39 are? Simon The B1 (and the Standard 4) were the work of Alan Whitehouse. Regards, Andy
RMweb Premium 65179 Posted October 10, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 10, 2015 Thank you Alan and Andy. Alan, does your J39 use the new association chassis? Simon
Alan P
Thank you Alan and Andy. Alan, does your J39 use the new association chassis? Simon Hi Simon No it does not. I did not know there was a 2FS chassis yet for this model but I have not looked at the shop list in detail recently. Its quite a simple conversion. The existing loco chassis is retained with the hornblock bearings replaced by those stocked by the Association. This allows 2FS driving wheels to be fitted with shortened muffs and set to the correct back to back dimension. From memory the muffs are cut to a length of around 4.7-4.8 mm to fit between the hornblocks with a slight end play to eliminate binding when in the chassis. The existing tie bar can be used in this model, the new style being an improvement over previous offerings. As connecting rods were not available from the shop these were cut from steel strip. I marked them out , fluted and drilled them on a small milling machine, and then cut them out on the machine, but if you do not have such items they can be hand cut with a piercing saw. The tender wheel flanges were re-profiled on a lathe. Traction tyres have to be removed before turning and when replaced ensure they are not stretched and fit evenly around the wheel. I deliberately did not reuce the tread width as this is well hidden and the extra width will help to maintain contact as the wheels move across the rail head. The back to back dimensions were adjusted with a wheel puller. I looked at extra tender weight and a set of contacts on the third axle of the tender but found these impossible in this case. The coal load was reduced in height and re-profiled then covered in actual coal. Finally weathering appplied. Hope this helps. Alan
RMweb Premium 65179 Posted October 11, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 11, 2015 Hi Alan, thanks that's very helpful. It sounds like less work overall than the new chassis if you have access to a lathe. Simon
Alan P
Hi Alan, thanks that's very helpful. It sounds like less work overall than the new chassis if you have access to a lathe. Simon Hi Simon Don't let this top you as The 2MM Scale Association currently has a members wheel re-profiling service for a very nominal sum. You may already be aware of this. This normaly means re shaping the flange on the Farish wheels, but the tread width remains the same as removing metal from the face of the wheel would damage the spokes Two other bits of information. Mick Simpson wrote two articles on this conversion, firstly in BRM Jan 2014 where he modified the existing hornblocks and used existing wheels, and secondly in MRJ 238 converting to.Association wheels. So there is always a way forward. I see the J39 now appears in shop lists and Chris Higgs has posted details on the members VAG but I have not yet seen them.
