RMweb Premium newbryford Posted January 2, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2016 is that not the State Mental Hospital? I think that's further to the east, alongside the Edinburgh line. Nowadays there are very high fences around it. Cheers, Mick
pH
is that not the State Mental Hospital? That was my first thought, too. But I can't get the direction of the picture to line up. Going from the curve in the platform, I'm assuming the train is arriving from the Glasgow direction, and the picture is taken facing northwest. The State Mental Hospital is northeast of the station, beyond the site of the shed (which would still have been there when that picture was taken), alongside the Edinburgh line. Unless the hospital has been rebuilt on a new site since the picture was taken (1950s - early 1960s). Edit - sorry, I didn't read to the end of the topic. I see Mick has already replied. RMweb Premium keefer Posted January 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2016 apologies, going from vague memory there - I hadn't realised the hospital was so far 'round the corner' as it were.
pH
OK, I do now think number 4 is Carstairs station, and that isn't a building in the background. You can see it a bit more clearly in the background of some photos, like this one https://flic.kr/p/5wBykB (While it's not a building, I don't know what it actually is!) pH
#3 - 64497 is at Bathgate shed #2 - 57447, I'm pretty sure is at Motherwell shed #4 - 56029. Take you pick -Dawsholm https://www.railscot.co.uk/imageenlarge/imagecomplete.php?id=29608or Kipps https://www.railscot.co.uk/imageenlarge/singleimage.php?id=22947 Actually, I think those two pictures and your puzzle picture are all taken at the same place (look at the condition of the smokebox dart), and I think that place is on the south side of the main line at Kipps shed. I don't think it's Dawsholm because (IIRC) that shed had a much higher bank to one side, and the River Kelvin to the other.

luckymucklebackit
Number 4 is definitely Kipps Paul agree - probably one of the most frequently photographed locomotives at Kipps. It went there in October 1959 and was withdrawn in December 1962, it then lay in storage until July 1964 (during which time most of the photos were taken) when it was hauled off to Motherwell Machinery and Scrap Co , Wishaw. RMweb Gold big jim Posted January 5, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2016 Ref 56029 tank loco above, ive never actually seen a real Hornby 'smoky joe' before, i thought it was a made up type of loco
bike2steam
Pic #3 is definitely Coalville shed, with a prominent roof extractor fan, in the background, of Pegson's makers of mobile crushing machines. The main shed, and coaling plant were off to the right of the pic.
