All back in one piece. :)

Thanks to a certain Mr Makin, he mentioned swapping the windscreen wipers around on the bubble car he's just done, and when I looked at prototype pics of them it seems they could be anywhere !

So I left one end as is, and swapped the other end around.

Cheers,

Phil.

Very nice weathering Phil, what were the colours you used, were they pre mixed frame and roof dirt?

Steve.

Thanks for the comment.

The sprayed colours used on these are just Railmatch 'Roof Dirt' and 'Frame Dirt'.

For spraying, I usually start with the chassis upside down in my hand, and work on the inner parts of the chassis first.

Then the chassis is stood on the piece of track seen in the top post on this page.

It's a piece of 4"x2" wood, so I can spray from all angles above and below track level.

The wood is stood on an old record turntable, so I can turn the chassis to any desired angle (by hand, not at 45 RPM !!)

The frame dirt is done on the outer parts of the chassis, then the body is placed on the chassis, as per the top pics of this page. (not pushed right down into its normal position) and frame dirt is applied to the body. This makes it easier to get to the lower edge of the body, and I tend to aim the spray at the chassis just below where the body is, to hopefully avoid too much paint getting on the body!

Next, Roof dirt is applied (and in the case of the 121 I used the same technique with Humbrol 'Smoke' weathering powder, as I did with the parcels vans earlier in the thread.)

Roof dirt is also added to various places on the chassis to break up the monotone look, and to specific areas that look darker on prototype pics. On the 121, that seemed to be the steps under the doors and on the bogies, plus the axleboxes.

Matt Black is then added to the Roof dirt, and used on the roof to represent exhaust staining. the same mix is used for the buffer grease.

Depending on the look I'm trying to replicate, 'Brake dust' and/or 'Dark rust' will be sprayed onto the chassis too, usually before the 'Frame dirt' treatment.

I find this more preferable to adding them after the 'Frame dirt', as I think it just gives more subtle, tonal variety, as opposed to just random spots of different colours !

( just my preference, but everyone will have their own views !! )

Hope all this rambling makes sense !!

Cheers,

Phil.

Great work Phil, a few nice and grubby 'everyday' items of rolling stock that are often forgotten for the more exciting locos etc.

Jack.

Thanks Jack,

I've had the 128 & the BG since they were first produced, but they've been dropped down the list of things to do as, like you say, more exciting stuff has got priority !

My Son has a pet hate of running anything 'straight from the box', so I'm having to do the more mundane stock to fill the layout !! :P

Cheers,

Phil.

At least you will only have to put a driver in each end! And half a dozen mail sacks in side

Cheeky sod, the drivers are already in !

It’s the first thing Dad looks for in anything I do ! :stinker:

Let you off! Couldn't see him/her....(in this politically gender neutral snowflake world! ) what about mail sacks?

Harsh words...not just Vomiters either, HSTs too.

Great work Phil, are you going to Wigan this weekend?

Over the last couple of weeks, the layout has been swapped over from 'retro' to 'modern' mode.

That's stock, road vehicles, station and depot signage, adverts........

.....it's a bit of a faff, but my lad likes swapping them and it helps remind me what's in the stock boxes that needs finishing !

Anyway, we've swapped to Northern mode (the layout, don't think anyone would accuse the family of ever being anything else !!), so it's all Sprinters and freight stock. Plus a Red and White HST !

While looking at the HST set, I got thinking that I really should get on with doing something to our FGW/GWR HST's, before the arrival of a couple of 'Castle' sets of stock that we have on order.

I thought I'd start with the power cars, and do the coaches after.

Turns out we've got more of them than I thought !!20191012_083920.jpg.6ce40344a7e567d068ba8f30d0a29586.jpg

We've decided the identities of the FGW Purple ones will be -

43154

So there's an un-named one, it's already that number, and we've had it for haulage !  :P

43155 The Red Arrows

We all like the name and what it's named after ! It's also suitable for the longer exhaust cowl model.

43172 Harry Patch

Don't think I need to explain why.

43179 Pride of Laira

Just seemed appropriate, I used to love going there as a kid, (admittedly not particularly to see HST's), it's suitable for the longer roof cowl model, and we've had it for haulage ! :P

All the transfers I needed were ordered from Railtec, which duly arrived in a couple of days.( cheers Steve!! )

I thought I'd start with 43155.

Turns out there's more to do than I thought ( isn't there always !! )

Pics for comparison to untouched model.1356532731_20191010_180139(1280x543).jpg.ab7f487412e8abdabe44675319e1f074.jpg

Namplates and crests added, renumbered, overhead warning sign moved, writing removed from luggage door.

Namplates and crests added, renumbered, overhead warning sign moved (but not far !!), writing removed from luggage door, 'Brush' rebuild plate added.

Data panels and warning labels moved.

The problem with all this is, I didn't realise I'd be moving the data panels or having to add the 'Brush' plates !

I'd got enough of them on various Railtec sheets in my possession to do this power car, but then I'm struggling. :(

There's also a very pretty little 'Old Oak Common HST Depot' shed sticker on the gangway end of the prototype.

So, a request has gone in to Steve at Railtec for the missing elements, but in the meantime I'll plod on with the others !

Cheers,

Phil.

I was gonna say how contradictory but then realised they come up here that often to Hull and Scotland on transfer so they’re slowly becoming Northern.

Plenty to keep you busy!

Also made a start on these.

43187 & 43188 because we had them for haulage on holiday this year, (& we like the Dragons !!)

43198 because we think it was a nice touch by GWR to apply the names for the last day in service.

Transfers added (or removed !) as appropriate.

43187 has had a coat of Johnsons Klear over the sides, to hide the transfer carrier film.

Before the Klear went on, 187 looked the same as 188 does in the pics.

I wasn't sure if carrier film would 'disappear' under the varnish. I'm used to applying varnish to a 'gloss' patch where something has been renumbered, etc, to make it appear 'Matt', but not the other way around !

Anyway, I was pleased with the results.

The other power cars will get the same treatment, when the 'Brush' plates have been added.

Cheers,

Phil.
