RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 4, 2020 (edited) Way back on page 21 of the thread, I showed 4 Warwells with temporary loads of LandRovers. Even though I knew they weren't staying like that, it still wound me up every time I saw them. No tie-down fastenings just looks wrong !! I kept thinking 'just let it go until all the other parts are in place, and sort it out all in one go', but..... The plan has kinda grown, so the train will now include- 4 Warwells carrying LandRover FC101's ( I think that's their proper name!) I was going to go for Tanks but everyone goes for Tanks ! 2 Warflats carrying 2 LWB LandRovers each ( the ones that have been on the Warwells ) 1 OCA wagon carrying 2 trailers. 1 OBA wagon carrying a third trailer and a compressor. 1 KFA carrying 3 MOD 20ft ISO containers. A selection of VGA or VDA vans, however many that will fit in the fiddleyard road !! So far I've got- All the road vehicles, plus transfers to change the numberplates. Some chain for tie-downs. Some of which may end up being modelled as straps ! The Warwells. The kits for the MOD containers, but no transfers for them ! The OBA and OCA wagons. So I'm probably missing as many parts as I've got ! Anyway, these are the road vehicles I'm talking about. Pic taken on a less than ideal background ! I'm going to make a start on what I can do, starting with the OBA and OCA wagons. But this topic will keep popping up between other tasks. Cheers, Phil. RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 4, 2020 Progress on the OBA & OCA. First job was to decide which actual wagons were going in the rake, I've got a box with a few various liveried wagons, but decided on a Red OCA & a railfreight Grey/Red OBA. Start point. (Took the pic then realised I'd picked up the OCA with 'modern' flashes, so swapped it for one without them, but didn't take another pic !) The insides were treated first. There's going to be one 'replacement' plank on each side of the OBA, so they were painted light grey. The 'wood' of each wagon (floor of the OCA & floor + long sides of the OBA) then got a pale grey wash. All dried with a hairdryer. The 'replacement' planks got a coat of pale brown, thin enough to allow the grey to show through in places. Another blast with the hairdryer ! All the wood then got a wash of brown. Another blast with the hairdryer ! The metalwork all got a coat of 'rust', made up of white spirit mixed with the same powders I used on the Limpet wagons. I'd left the wash in an open topped container so it had dried up, just add more white spirit and away you go ! Another blast with the hairdryer ! The outside then got a light grey wash. Another blast with the hairdryer !! The chains on the outside of both wagons + the hinge-straps on the OBA had a thin coat of 'rust' mix. Another blast with the hairdryer ! All outside metalwork got a thin wash of the 'rust' mixture. Another blast with the hairdryer ! Finally both wagons got an airbrush coat of matt varnish. And another blast with the hairdryer !! Not sure how well any of this shows up, but hopefully the following pics comparing with clean wagons show it up !! Cheers, Phil. 9
Departmental203
These wagons are looking sweet, Phil! At least you model the 80/90's when the OBA/OCA fllets when these wagons were in (relatively) good condition, not the wobegone apperance of today (the era I'm modelling)! Currently, I'm revisiting my old Cambrian OBA and I'm painting plank by plank, which can test my already limited patience! Jules I guess a couple of the wagons left in the box will end up in our up-to-date fleet. As you say, all the wagons still in use are in a terrible state ! cheers, Phil.

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 6, 2020 The wagons have had airbrush chassis weathering. Which leaves them ready to be loaded with these, when I've built them..... cheers, Phil.
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 7, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 7, 2020 The trailers have been tidied up and had a coat of primer. RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 8, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2020 Airbrushed the trailers & wheels last night. Brush painted the tarpaulins with a very slightly different shade of green, and the tyres with a very dark grey, this morning. Regards Ali Hi Ali, I'm using the Scale Model Scenery kits, which I've started today, will let you know how they go together. So far I've built 3 square boxes, all the detail goes around the outside of these. So far they've gone together a treat. Cheers, Phil.
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 9, 2020 While I was adding numberplates to the trailers, I thought I might as well do the other vehicles at the same time. And progress so far on the MOD boxes, just the inner structures built and weight added. Cheers, Phil. 8
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 10, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 10, 2020 OBA & OCA have had the loads installed. In the period I'm working from it appears that both chains & straps were used for securing loads. I added the compressor first, but found the chain appears overscale & was a PITA to work with !! So the rest of the loads may well all be secured by straps, my excuse being that the compressor will be the final 'vehicle' in the train, so they'd used up all the straps and only had chains left. Cheers, Phil. 12
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 11, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 11, 2020 These boxes went together so easily, I finished putting them together before I thought about taking any pics !! No fettling required other than smoothing off the tags. I'm going for quite early in the use of these, so quite a bright red, they appear to have dulled down to a darker shade since. Used a mix of bright red & red oxide with a dash of light grey, to get the colour I wanted. I deliberately mixed enough for one container at a time, so there could be slight differences in the shade to replicate fading of the real things, but I'm not sure it really shows ! Next job is to get them varnished before the transfers arrive. Cheers, Phil. 7
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 13, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 13, 2020 (edited) Another part of the MOD train complete. (well, almost complete. I'll put some chocks under the wheels when I get some suitably sized L-section plastic strip !) The axles of the vehicles were glued so they couldn't rotate. 4x over-length pieces of 1mm masking tape were glued to the vehicle. Vehicle then glued to wagon deck. Glue dotted on top of the shackle hoops and straps held into the glue. When glue had set, the straps were cut to length. Extra bits of tape were glued to the straps to represent the slack from the ratchets. Cheers, Phil. Edited May 13, 2020 by Phil Mc 14

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 14, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 14, 2020 The boxes have been varnished, had the transfers applied, then varnished again. I put them in a plastic box after applying the top coat of varnish, then promptly dropped it on the garage floor. The (luckily!!) slightly damaged paintwork on some corners has been touched in. Hopefully get the locking bars on tomorrow, if I don't try juggling with them again ! Cheers, Phil.

Decals look really good, are they the ones from Precision? Ali Thanks Ali, The doors are on one side and one end, there is another end piece in the kit if you don't want any end doors. The transfers are the Precision ones, there's enough on the sheet for 9 containers, so there's a mix of different styles. Because the container kit isn't based on the type of box the MOD use (the MOD boxes have 3 ribs per door, the kit is based on a type with 2 ribs per door. No fault of the kit !) I've had to use a bit of artistic licence with the positioning of some of the transfers. Also, every pic I could find of these things was of the door side or the ends, so I'm not really sure of the positioning (or existence !!) of transfers on the other side. Cheers, Phil.
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 17, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 17, 2020 Door locking bars added. Again, not strictly following the kit instructions but as near as possible to the look of the prototype. Think they'll look ok on a KFA. Could be a bit of good timing with these, I've got the KFA with 3x 20ft boxes in this years Hornby releases, on order from our local model shop. It's started showing as 'in stock' with some retailers this week, so I shouldn't have too long to wait for it to arrive. I picked that one because I can re-use the boxes on one of our container trains, which still have a few spaces on them, but no spaces big enough for a 40ft box. The scope of technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting is immense for projects like this, you just need to be skilled enough to design the things! And know someone who has the capability to produce them... Looking forward to seeing these loaded on a KFA in a military formation. Jack. 4
