Hi Phil,

great work on the MoD containers. I am sat building 6 as I type this. I’m after a favour, could you let me know two things please:

- what colour did you use?

- have you got a photo showing the transfers on the non door side?

thanks in advance

jeff

Hi Jeff,

The colour is a mix of mainly bright red with a bit of red oxide and a spot of light grey. I just mixed them until it looked like what I wanted.

I think it would probably be possible to leave out the red oxide, depending on what stage of their career you are modelling.

Couldn't find any pics of the non-door side, assuming they don't have doors on both long sides !

Cheers,

Phil.

Useful colour tip there Phil, I'll try that as my base when I get round to doing my N scale C-Rail ones.

The MoD containers have doors on both sides, does the kit only have them on one then? Run them door side outwards on the layout!

I assumed they must have, as I couldn't find ANY pics of a non-door side !!

The kit is sold as a '20ft side opening shipping container', it doesn't mention the MOD anywhere, so it's not the manufacturers fault that I'm using it as something it doesn't profess to be.

I'll only see the door-side on the layout. ;)

TBH, the kits are cheap enough that if it bothered me that much about having doors on both sides, I'd have bought 2 kits to make each container.

But the ribs in the doors would still be different to the prototype MOD boxes !

I guess the Wild Boar Models version is the only way to get prototype fidelity, but the ones I've built are good enough for me. :smile_mini:

Cheers,

Phil.

‘’THE” layout, not “MY” layout, at dads.

BB is quite right, I don’t do scenery.

When I get to the end of the ‘to do’ list I’ll think about building one......

cheers,

Phil.

So, having ordered an inspection saloon for our 'modern' era :D, I thought it was maybe time to finish the one for our 'retro' era.

Again, not exactly perfect for the South West area, but it's been sat in its box since first released, so it's due a run out !

Hardest job so far was to get the b****y thing apart !!

First up was paint some interior parts, and slight mods to the kitchen area.

 Then wire the pick-ups together.

Then solder up a light-bar.

Which was REALLY bright ! :O

A suitable resistor was added between the anti-flicker unit and the LED's'

Checked to make sure everything fitted where I wanted it.

Before adding the crew.

Detailing to one end and weathering still to do.

Cheers,

Phil.

Put it back together, took the pics....

......then realised I'd not re-fitted the handrails to the side doors.

Other than that, it's complete.

The recent announcement by Dapol of another batch HIA wagons prompted me into doing something with these !!

It's all 12 previous releases, that I've not got around to weathering.

20200605_210612.jpg.1b8c80a652643b9ca55af8d69cbddeca.jpg

As can be seen, there was a difference between the first two batches of internal body colour, but I don't think it will be an issue with the final result.

I figured I'd do one wagon, then when I'm happy with the result, copy the procedure through the rest.

The only physical mods I planned on doing was to remove the 2 unwanted door opening cylinders on one side of each wagon, and remove the centre strengthening ribs in the top bodyside recess of whichever wagons required it.

Turns out, of all the running numbers Dapol picked, only one (369052) needed the second mod doing.  :smile_mini:

So that's the wagon I 'practiced' with.

First job, strip the wagon down, which was pretty easy. Bogies off, 4 screws out underneath, bit of brute ignorance to get the sides off, job done. :D

Pic shows the ribs and extra cylinders removed, the green paint touched in,  and the end ribbed door panels painted a (hopefully!) more accurate shade.

The upper sections of the hopper shutes were also painted body colour, after unscrewing the door mouldings.

I also removed some of the paint from the internal slopes, as my pics of these wagons suggest bare metal is showing in this area,

20200607_131003.jpg.efafd30264704bffd92ee67cc76e9430.jpg

The inside areas were then sprayed with 'rust'. Also including the top section of the sides that protrude beyond the sloping ends.

I also allowed some slight overspray onto the top outer surface of the sides.

Can also see my aborted experiment with powder weathering for the limestone.

20200607_131100.jpg.7213280a2e80a18f6fab572d1460ca00.jpg

I chose to spray 'limestone dust' instead, again allowing some slight overspray to the tops.

20200607_131144.jpg.a1687250a790be50b99c193bc8f6d04d.jpg

The white panels on the sides and the centres of the handwheels were toned down with grey wash.

The green sections of the ends, around the ribbed panels, got a coat of my 'rust' powder mixed with white spirit mixture then the whole lot got a coat of matt varnish.

20200607_131230.jpg.dd01f858d3a81945f01bf31e08668c0d.jpg

Results so far-

20200607_181934.jpg.42fb0220a8ab95531d98d0ec7ac5e53b.jpg

20200607_182022.jpg.ccc4870429c42b7abe6e46c329328c0d.jpg

20200607_182101.jpg.f5d5e4f2e3d7944ecac5f23e1c3b2443.jpg20200607_182138.jpg.d654d6e7780f6af0ee70760477feca2b.jpg

Will probably get them all to this stage, before weathering the running gear on them all in one go.

Cheers,

Phil.

Nice work Phil.

You've reminded me how undernourished the buffers are on the HIA

Oh for a 3D printer..........................

True, they are a bit scrawny !!

On a positive note with the project, it’s only the first batch ( with the body coloured interiors ) that need the extra cylinders removing. The second batch ( with the rust coloured interiors ) haven’t got them on. :D

cheers,

Phil.

The KFA wagon for my MOD train arrived on Wednesday, so last night I thought as an interlude to the HIA project I'd weather it.

I thought I might have a go at using the techniques that self-proclaimed 'professionals' (especially on eBay!!) use, so I just airbrushed it all over with Brown !

I did vary from the method then though, I reloaded the airbrush with white spirit, and blasted the outer faces of the body, to remove some of the muck and let the paintwork show through.

Anyway, this is the result-

20200612_155547.jpg.0a8a9ba4db58a50052e6e30cca9ab804.jpg

20200612_155843.jpg.888e7ed16ac670f1de2d472d3493f3e2.jpg

Then I covered most of the work with the boxes !

20200612_160149.jpg.1308f6a7626f18636b72b40f34155cad.jpg

Now it's back to the HIAs.

Cheers,

Phil.

Looking really good Phil!

I’m guessing you didn’t have any spacing issues with the handles of the containers sticking out too far? Been holding off to see how you got on with Project before having ago myself!

I haven’t given it a run yet, the containers only went on the chassis 5 mins before the pic.

If you mean on the sides, I can’t imagine the handles will be an issue, but if they are I could shuffle the boxes over a fraction on the chassis.

If you mean on the ends, there’s only handles on the container where you can see the doors, but that’s a secret so don’t tell anyone. :wink_mini:
(There is a slight gap between the boxes, but you can’t see that the handles are missing.)

cheers,

Phil.

sorry Phil, was referring to the normal end doors, didn’t know if they projected too far making the 3 containers too long but don’t worry your secret is safe!

Progress with the HIA's.

Got them all to the same stage as the test wagon.

After again studying my prototype pics, I've gone for a random mix of Green axleboxes, Yellow axleboxes, and White 'T' bars above the axleboxes.

Also a couple of wagons have one section of the ribbed end panels painted a much 'cleaner' colour to replicate replacement sheeting.

My pics seem to show that the White wagons appear to have suffered more with rust on the end sloping sections, I wonder if green paint is thicker ??!!

Pic below shows the results of this afternoons airbrush session.

They're all weathered, so it's just a case of cleaning the wheels and adding pipes and a (non-working) tail-lamp to the rear wagon.

20200616_203631.jpg.3be8ccbe8907b10be493067e84bcdd6f.jpg

I am compiling a folder of pics of the graffiti this type of wagon carries, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to 'tag' them !

Cheers,

Phil.

Sorry to upset any one....as much as there is some very realistically applied tagging that looks good on models....but bloody hate it in the 12inch to foot world....taggers are scum..wouldn't like it if sprayed there skate board a nice neon yellow and hot pink camo design!

Rant over...back to bed now

Weathering that's natural....and well applied Phil

An order has recently gone in to Railtec for some bespoke wagon number transfers, the results of which will appear on here eventually !

At the same time I've ordered numbers for this pair of locos.

20200622_131007.jpg.fc947c404e11d36f4af11e6ea216b4de.jpg

So I might as well get on with the preparation of them.

For our retro era timeframe, the 33 could actually stay as it is, but it's not quite 'run-of-the-mill' enough for me, so it's going to be 33111 in plain Blue with no cantrail stripe. Just because I took a pic of it like that at Dawlish !

The 37 is going to join my existing fleet of St Blazey Tractors, as 37670. They are all based on this version of the Bachmann tooling, to try to keep some uniformity.

Cheers,

Phil.

Progress so far.

Both locos stripped down, Yellow applied where appropriate.

The tractor has had the RSH style grille strips added, & is ready for Rail Grey spraying on.

I remembered to rub down the cantrail stripe on the 33 before masking up for spraying the Blue.

For the shoulder grilles, I masked them in one piece then will brush paint the Blue strips between them after spraying. I figured that was easier than masking them individually !

20200627_173720.jpg.c4fbdd9f59c2c309921396621a42894c.jpg

The 37 has had the lightest shade of Grey added, & the 33 with the masking removed, but before the Blue strips are brush painted.

Both locos have had the livery paintwork completed, and patches of Gloss varnish applied where the transfers will go.

20200702_184844.jpg.468fb4ddf1c90e0d7d73bc09d8cd4c9f.jpg

The 2 wagons are Jacks first attempts at kit building (no input from me !)

Nice smooth tops to the bodywork, and no wobble to the chassis'.
