The replacement lights have been fitted to all Freightliner 'orignal style' 66s (501-537, 601-606) and a fair proportion of the DB fleet over the last 5 years or so. The new light clusters are slightly chunkier than the type they replace, marker lights (for yard etc) is top one plus inner pair, mainline running the outer pair go on too, as you rightly point out giving all lights lit up white. It's also noticeable that they give a very white light. Jo Just been looking through my pics, most seem to still use left-hand headlight (when looking at the front) for daytime running, and right-hand headlight for night time. But I have captured a few with a full house ! Cheers, Phil.
Steadfast
Yeah definitely, it's only those with the replacement lights that run with every lit up like a Christmas tree. Quite a few still with the original lights running about. Jo

I believe the 'full house' light display (with funny shaped light source/lense on head light) was to meet the new standards for European compliance set a few years ago before we went are own way the new brighter head lights have resulted in the facility to do away with yellow fronts...so far no locos without yellow fronts may be the yellow has its benefits for stuff that shunts? but of a night on main line you defo see the head lights even the led marker lights are bright.....its come a long way from couple of 40w bulbs in a blanked off headcode box! At least steam loco paraffin lamps had a lens built in. on a cl31 just a round cut out in black film for headcode box and the faint dim glow of a osram 40w clear screw thread heavy duty bulb! 4 bulb holders not always 4 working bulbs! 1
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 5, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2021 Another couple of loco's have had the light mods. The original style are more of a faff to fit, but only because of the need to drill holes for them. They don't look quite as ragged to the eye as they do in the cruel close-up, honest ! More packs on order, I'll gradually work my way through the fleet. Cheers, Phil.

RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 5, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2021 I’m doing some ‘bug-eyes’ next. I imagine the transformation is quite dramatic with those too ! & hopefully the real 66101 gets new lights soon. Less drilling of tiny holes in the model that way. cheers, Phil. RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 16, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 16, 2021 (edited) More cruel close-ups as I gradually work through the fleet. Some of the older locos have had other work done too, that I now do as standard on a shed. Like cutting down the length of the NEM pocket on the leading end, to stop it catching the back of the deflector plate and potentially causing derailments, and painting the Brass pick-up strips Black. All drivers are now wearing wearing more suitably coloured attire !! Still got plenty of Sheds to do, but I also noticed the Class 57 lights modification on the Illuminated Models website........ RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted May 26, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2021 Started on the 57's. A couple of the 57/6's ( 602 included ) will have 'night' headlights, the rest will have 'day' headlights. Before & after- Working my way through 301, 305, 602, 603, 604 & 605, but don't worry, I won't show pics of all of them....... Cheers, Phil. 7

Iron Horse
What have you used on them Phil?
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted June 21, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 21, 2021 Used the same Dark Grey wash I've used on lots of projects. It's more like dust in a solution, rather than a smooth liquid. (if that makes sense !!) The bolsters were separated from the body of each wagon, just to make handling easier. Started with a wash in the panel lines and grilles, which I let dry. Then I airbrushed the whole model in a thinned down version of the same wash. At this point, the whole thing looks like a disaster !! Then neat thinners is sprayed at them, to blast the wash back off from where I dont want it. Then they are left to dry. Cotton buds are then used to remove any of the remaining dried wash until I'm happy with the overall effect. A coat of Satin varnish was then applied, to seal the finish. The wheels were brush painted 'Frame Dirt' colour, and buffer grease was added using a cotton bud dipped in 'Roof Dirt' colour and dabbed on the buffer heads. All very messy, but good fun !! Cheers, Phil.
RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted June 26, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 26, 2021 The postie brought these today Couldn't wait to get started, so the deck got a thin wash of Humbrol Matt 29.... When dry, Humbrol Dark Earth powder was brushed along the planks.... Then airbrushed Frame Dirt was applied. The handwheels and lampbrackets were cleaned up, along with the Brake-disks and wheeltreads. Buffer-grease was added using Roof Dirt on a cotton bud. I'll let them dry for a few days, before adding the LandRovers..... Cheers, Phil. 13
