I have one to do that I bought part built many years ago at a Gauge O convention. They had only soldered strengthening bars at the bottom of the sides so I thought it was a bargain. I since acquired an RTR 6 wheel motor bogie and dummy. However I hear that the curvature of the roof is not accurate - can anyone confirm? Paul R I will let you know. I understand the cab roof is tricky in model form in any scale. Previous OO offerings by Hornby had similar criticisms. I will be happy if it is close enough. Father Dougal
Today I worked on my 129. I built this several years ago. I used over scale LEDs and I never liked how the floor was fixed to the roof or that the floor is plastic and it has warped. I planned to rework and upgrade. I have built an all brass floor. This fits snugly in the body shell. I have run out of brass sheet, so I can’t do more just yet. looking good so far. Father Dougal
Over the weekend I have been finishing off the 129 upgrade. Almost done now, I just need to fit the head code lights and wire them up. The 128 has been weathered and cab crew added. I ordered the sound chip, speaker and stay alive today. Hopefully it should arrive tomorrow. once done I will add photos and then I can get on with the 56 build. Dougal
Father Dougal
Ok so, Today the decoder etc arrived for the 128. The stay alive had 2 teeny weeny pads to solder to. The speaker was more challenging. There is a plastic piece with two tiny tabs to use or solder directly to the decoder. I broke the plastic tab! I resorted to hard wiring directly to the decoder, which was unnerving as any slip up and I would have cooked the decoder. Luckily fate smiled on me and everything runs fine. Heljan, can you make it easier to fit speakers to your models? My next challenge is renumbering the decoder. My 129 is 55997 and the 128 is 55994. I usually use the first 4 numbers, but this won’t work as they will be the same. I will use 5997 and 5994. Dougal.

Father Dougal
I started the 56 this morning. Pushing loads of rivets out was a bit tedious but looks good. I built the first cab end. The trick was to fit the roof first and then add the lower cab front and finish off with the window section. lots of subtle curves to the cab front and sides. Not a bad start. Dougal. Father Dougal
A bit more done after lunch. Both cab ends are in. I have also added the mesh for the fans and I built the side mesh frames- these are really cool. Lots more to do, but the basic shape looks ok. Father Dougal
Roof detail done and horn grills. I have started the buffer beams, but they need more work yet. not loads more to do on the body shell- most of the work is on the bogie side frames. I have now almost run out of solder, so I will not do much more until my delivery comes. Dougal.

woodyfox
Few tubes of filler round the roof sections needed! All good fun!
Father Dougal
A bit more progress... almost all the body detail is done now. I need to add the sandboxes and a little more bufferbeam detail. I also added a few struts to the body shell. Dougal

Dougal Dougal, you might want to re-visit the jumper on the far left, it should be a plug & socket rather than just cable trucking. Its certainly looking like a 56!!
Father Dougal
Oh.... those are the only ones supplied with the kit. Any suggestions? Dougal

Is it a PRMRP one as the picture on their website seems to have the correct part. Might be worth a phone call. Pretty much any multiple working jumper would suffice, I am pretty sure the housings are the same, it just the gubbins inside and the shape of the actual plug that differs. 1
Father Dougal
A bit more progress today. The bodyshell is done. Soldering the teeny weeny wipers was fun, but otherwise the build has been really straightforward. I built the fuel tanks and battery boxes today. They have an impressive amount of detail to fit. I removed the locating tabs at the top as mine will be fitted to the floor, once I build it. The only deviation so far, has been with the sand boxes fitted by the buffer beams. I didn’t like the way they fitted as they stuck out a bit. I refitted closer, which looks better. Tomorrow I will start the bogie side frames. I found some spare jumper cable bits which may work, if not I may email Peter and see what he has in stock. Photos tomorrow... Dougal.
Father Dougal
A few photos. I managed to find a replacement for the left side jumper cable. This was cut from a spare piece of casting I found. The fuel tanks are done. I added mesh at the base as the speaker will go inside this. the body shell has all the detail added but I need to clean up. I have started the bogie side frames this morning. Lots of folding required but pretty straightforward. Dougal.
Father Dougal
Making the bogie side frames was quite enjoyable. Here is the first one finished, the other 3 will be done soon. Dougal.

This has only taken me a week so far and I expect to have finished everything on the bogies by the end of my holiday. The power bogies are really straightforward as they use the same design across the range. worth considering as the Heljan one won’t appear until next spring. Father Dougal
Today I have mostly been messing around with my bogies. I have experimented with plastic struts here to avoid any risk of a short. I glued and screwed these in place- it is surprisingly strong. pwr
The 56 is one of my favourite locos and the bogies look very meaty - proper job mate! Paul R
Father Dougal
Getting there.... The bogies and side frames are done. I will order wheels from Slaters when Mrs Doyle gives me pocket money. I added some plastic tube around the lights- they look like mini Polos! I also added the cable- it is just placed on. I think it is over scale, so I will look for an alternative. oh and I have also found time to play trains today. Dougal.
