An update on the F1. Painting has begun. Body has been done two and a half times.  And the frames are in the process of being reassembled.

Well this was going to be a full update but it seems that you can't post enough pictures to do so.

I might post more later but this may be my last update, it's being to take too long to make simple posts.

Hi Pete, Only just found this thread, so this is where you've been hiding, I do miss your inspiring model making  from the blogs section, it's a pity you don't do them now, but I understand your reasoning.

I am really struggling with rmweb since the change, lots of it are very good. But for modellers who make and want to describe what they are doing it's now pretty useless. Having to reduce photos down to a level that spoils their use to get enough to show a modelling session is wrong.

I know there's some good modelling going on within the site, but the site seems more biased to RTR side of the hobby. Which is a shame as a lot of talented modellers have moved to other realms. I suppose it's the instant world we live in, where fewer people are willing to put the work in to get something unique.

The number of threads that start off I've started in O gauge because of such and such product made by? No mention of actually making something. I agree the latest products are very good. But for me they are no use at all. I do not want a  diesel loco or a GWR one. Even if I did I would probably want one of my own not one seen on every other layout.

Rant over, better get on and make something after saying all that.

I post mainly on WT now. A much better place for a making modeller.

I’m not having problems posting on here - I haven’t posted a lot recently because I’ve been playing (rather unsuccessfully, frustratingly) with Arduinos,  the hardware is one or two photos, and software isn’t photogenic at all...  but what I have posted has been fine as far as I know.  Am I missing something?

I’ve been on WT for a few years now, I did my Dukedog on the “what’s on your workbench” thread, and I’m planning to do my Mogul on there, but given I’ve invested several years and 40 odd pages on Porth Dinllaen, I think I’ll persevere with that thread a while yet!

The sites ok Simon, it's about the photos. Without going to an editor and doctoring all the pictures, you can't post many. I mainly use my phone and dislike the editors I've tried to use on it. My updated on the F1 was going to have 6 pictures and 3 for the carriage. Having taken the photos with the phone, so it was easy to post I could only upload one. So instead of being able to post while I'm waiting for wife or son at some activity. I would need to use model time putting photos on laptop, editing, and posting. It's more about me and what's convenient.

I may just post a photo of the finished articles with just one or two shot if I'm lucky.

Have you contacted Andy about this?

This forum has been my go to section for years but recently only Jazz seems to be posting on a regular basis. Both you and Sandy are sorely missed.

I just posted on the Forum Questions section asking if it’s not just a quick fix of changing a value in a settings box somewhere. It seems like it should be an easy thing to change given the current and potential drain of talent that has / is leaving the site, which s a real shame. I read the WT forums regularly, but don’t tend to post very often as i don’t think my modelling skills even remotely compare to those of the regular posters there! I for one value very highly the input from other members here, as they are helping me develop my modelling skills and Very selfishly don’t want everybody to leave! There must be an easy fix somewhere!

Hi Peter,

I understand your frustration with the 10mb photo limit. I also take lots of photos with the phone at about 4mb each. I don't want to take the photo at a lower resolution as they may get used for more than forum posting. However I also see why Andy has brought in the cap as folk were apparently posting huge 10mb+ photos and this takes up lots of expensive server storage. It's a pity the forum software doesn't auto compress. I use an App on the phone called "Reduce Photo Size"...

rps20190325_083214.jpg.c479f7649b1174800be7c23f7a0ff044.jpg

I find it simple to use for cropping, rotating and resizing.

I'd agree that RMweb seems to be heading more towards RTR, petty arguments and wishlisting. Such a shame. For folk who want to make stuff, particularly in 7mm, I've found the different focus of WT very rewarding.

Thanks Chris,

I'll have a look at that one. I tend to dislike editing on the phone, but will give this one go.

I agree totally with what you say. It's a great shame because it was a great site until recently. I wonder if it's because Warners have a bottom line to protect, RMweb ha moved to the RTR instant gratification side.

Heres an update to the last three builds on here. All are now ready for reassembly.

Let's start with the 1262 this apart from the wheels are ready. I needed to add balance weights, so they are a little behind schedule.

Next up the jubilee. This needs the backhead doing, the rest is painted so just needs putting back together. If like usual some fettling too.

Finally the F1 is the closest to completion. Mainly due to it being plain black. Hoping for some more like this one. I see I've got some red seepage on the rear of the tender to sort. This also needs the backhead making.

Hi Peter, what a treat on a Tuesday morning. The finish is excellent. It's almost unfair that all your fettling, modification and hard work doesn't show! But that's the hallmark of skilled modelling I suppose.

Thanks Mikkel.

I seemed to of got big down a little with so much on the go. Will be cutting down now. Hopefully won't get so bored as painting is the part I find really hard to do.

Peter,

And another one - me - who agrees completely with you, though I model in P4  4mm scale. The threads which now seem to attract the most posts and views seem to be those describing upcoming r-t-r models. And most of these postings don't really say anything worth reading 'Can't wait ..........'; 'Hope they do this as their next........'; 'Can we have this in pre 1923 livery - No, it's a BR Standard!!' etc.

Sign of the times, perhaps, that so little seems to be devoted to actually making anything.

Ah well, another contributor who will eagerly read your stuff on WT and post only occasionally, on here! Interesting that the total postings, on this topic area, often number less than ten in a day and one or two of those can be 'a little strange'.

Regards

Mike

The 1262 is now running under its own electricity. The body is resting on for weight. I will now fit the brakes and then it's down to fixing the bits onto the body.

Time to get on it looks like this should be ready for boxing sometime next week.

The jubilee is now motorized, with pickups and brakes. Just a couple of bits to then the frames are completed. The body still needs quite a bit adding. The tender is all it there too.

The loco runs well with my knackered old duette. Must get something newer in July when in UK.

It does not like the A5.5 turnouts on the test track, but has no problems with Peco ones.

I'm pleased with the running of this I always have great trepidation on the running qualities when valve gear is involved.

Last in first out. Holds true, the F1 is now complete. I did really enjoy this build. It was a shame about the brake hangers all being the same hand. I was also pleased I changed the smokebox door, I just think it's the wrong sort.

I will check everything again in a week or so. Before I get the camera out.

Sorry picture overload coming, not sure about the quality of my photography or the reduced size of them to get on here.

On with the jubilee and 1262. Then I can have a break and start my layout. Next loco builds will most likely be a saint class. But not untill the autumn.

As always, a nice build.

For the F1 there is a supplementary etch that has the correct handed brake hangers: I guess your kit missed out in the packing. I am now re-checking stock kits.....

There wasn't a supplementary etch, just extras added to the body sheet as the chassis ones where wrong. Just happened the body ones were too. It did say in the instructions the frame ones were wrong for one side. But unfortunately the spares were drawn wrong too.

Anyway glad to hear that the problem has/had been addressed. Mine was some years old. Still was a nice kit to build.

Peter,

What beautiful work. The finish is so clean. I see that these models are 7mm thanks goodness else I might as well pack up with my 4mm efforts!

I really find scratch and kit building locomotives so rewarding its good for the soul. Keep up the excellent work!

Kind regards,

Richard B
