  • 1 month later...

Back to the bench last night for the first time since the middle of December.

Here is something I bought to rebuild from a well known auction site. It seems to have all the bits that are not on the loco.

It has no motor, which is a shame, but we can get over that. It is slightly more decrepit than I thought. But as it cost less than a £100 I thought it worth a punt.  As you can see the rear end has been jacked up like an 1980's cortina. The bogie is held on by a screw with the nut the wrong side of the frames.

Not sure if the frames are straight bit I will strip them down and rebuild, to make sure all is ok.

As you can see there are a few issues with the quality of construction. Don't you just love the quality of the invisible soldering. Even mine is not quite to this standard. I can see one or two parts will need replacing. this can all be assessed when its been held over the gas ring and cleaned up.

I am also hoping  that not too much has been put together inside out. I had this with the Hall I rebuilt. How can it be done surely people cant think holes look like raised rivets.

I think I will roll a new boiler as this one is about 1/16" thick and I do not think even the micro torch will touch it.  I will also be building another loco alongside this itmay help with the sanity.

As I said I am building a second loco at the same time to save the sanity, this is a fresh unbuilt kit. What is it I hear you all say, something simple a nice modern kit? If you thought that you've not been paying attention to what I build. Well it's an Oakville, LMS jubilee. Apart from the etches needing cleaning its all together. Must be a more recent kit to the 45XX I built as this one has nickle silver slide bars and cross heads not white metal.

So what do we have apart from the etches and castings, all the wheels, a choice of 3 names all long firebox ones. Extra DJB valve gear, a pair of connecting rods looking a little long will check when the time come. All th bits and bobs cost nothing they just happened to be with other Ebay buys.

Now the etches they seem to be complete. and most look usable. As long as they fit.

This one I am quite looking forward too. I know there will be problems but the kits from the same range I have made have all turned out ok. Lets see. Battle may commence over the weekend. I need to sort out the bits I have bought over the last two years or so into some sort of order.

Good grief. I've done some rebuilt in my time but the takes takes some beating. Good luck with it.

Will check in a couple of weeks to see if it's finished ;)

Well, the Johnson 0-4-4 will be a bit of a laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it. The jubilee will be a stroll in the park by comparison.

Watching with breath abated...

Best

Yes it is a bit of a mess, I am sure it will look better once it's a kit again and clean. The only bit I dislike is the over thick boiler with grooves for the bands. This will be cured with a newly rolled one.

Ideal project for the home diyist! Makes my dodgy soldering look almost passable.

Nice to have you back working on another stray, looking forward to seeing you turn it into something so much nicer.

Thanks Chris. Been following your progress on Pencarrow. This time last week I was there.  Sorry to hear about your ribs I've done them two or three times.

Good to see you back at the bench! The Johnson looks interesting.....is it all coming apart, or just the chassis?

The whole lot will be taken apart. There's beading and things that need looking at. Also there's a squareness issue with most parts. It is easier to start from the beginning, you can sort all the bits that would nag you right to the end.

Agreed: good to see you back at the bench. best of luck with these.

Thanks David

I have got a Gladiator F1 after these, which I am looking forward to.

Just Paid Finney7 for my M7. Just need to save up ready for when the K10 comes out.

Work has started on the LMS 0-4-4T Not much I have been hit by a serious case of man flu plus.

We have a kit of parts again.

All in all not as bad as I thought it would be. May need a new smokebox wrapper, cab roof, some beading  and I may roll a boiler that's not 1/16" thick. We will see with all these bits when we get to using them.

Nearly forgot a cab front who does this to get it to fit?

Here is the first bit actually redone. The bogie all horns now work as do the side control springs. Next I will try and get the frames to the same state.

On to the filleted frog. Sorry the main frames. It has been handy the the folds were never soldered, made it all easier. I have managed one horn repair. I then thought I see if I could do something about the coupling rods. These were poorly made with the crank pins super glued in them, again why. did they want to wear holes into the wheels.

Here is one of the coupling rods before I did anything with it.

I was unsure if I could redo them as with all Slaters coupling rods they are steel and are not easy to get right first time around.let alone have to strip apart and redo. I think I have salvaged them. Still a little more cleaning and polishing, but they I think will be usable, will also save a three month wait for replacements.

Next I will finish the horns and try and get the frames detailed and running. I will also start the frames for the Jubilee. That will need to checked for each side of the frames being the same as the other. I've had lopsided holes before with Oakdale kits.

The main frames our now ready for testing with the wheels before adding the details. Quite pleased with the way they've turned out, hopefully will work well too. This time the motion plate has been fitted. whether it needs any any representation of slide bars and cross heads we will see later when we can see whats visible under the boiler.

Forward to the testing and detailing now. once that's done I will be happy.

Have also made a start on the Jubilee as I said I would. The loco and tender frames have been tacked together to clean up and check to see if they are actually alike.

The loco frames are pretty good. For this loco I am moving away from my usual compensation and going to lightly spring the centre axle per Ken (Jazz) of this parish. Will be an interesting change.

post-13601-0-45458900-1520796258_thumb.jpg

Tender frames are very basic but even then the first fault arises, the holes for the bearings are too big for the ones supplied.

Well onward to the next session. Time to see if I need to make wider or new spacers.

Going well so far Peter. I must say you are a braver man than men. I cannot bring myself to build two locos at the same time. Too confusing by half.

That is not to say I will start one and perhaps for one reason or another return it to the box and do a different one. (As is the case of the Bulldog and

L & Y Pug I have on the go)

I normally like to do them one at a time. But with the little tank being so poor I thought I might need something to keep me sane. I expect the main concentration will be on the tank.

Managed a good couple of hours at the bench last night.

We now have a rolling chassis. The surprise was how little tweaking it require considering the state it started off in. Have known a lot worse. It still is not quite level, but that's not a problem.  I have to adjust the side control mounting on the bogie as there is a little slop to remove.

Now on with the details and the footplate to double check that it will all work as it should.

You're a brave man Peter, I would have been reaching for my 'barge pole' on seeing that! Excellent work on the chassis. There is a certain satisfaction in resurrecting a heap like that.

I built the Oakville Black Five a number of years ago and I don't recall any great difficulty with it. Your Jubilee should be fine in your hands.

All the best

Sandy

Thanks Sandy

I was trying to get the black 5 as it probably has a greater salebility than the jubilee. Plus I am lazy when it comes to lining. But I do rather like the jubilees not so messed with as the Scots and patriots.
