N15class
We'll progress is at a snails pace. I think I'm bored with it. I was expecting a slightly better kit. Lots of parts especially castings are not as per prototype. I think parts were use from other locos. "Well it's LMS so must be right. Back to the build. I've made and fitted a motion bracket as the 2 types in the kit would not fit. Springs and sandpipes are done the front sandpipes fit into a tube after painting as they would lock the brakes in place. The brakes are now done and are removable, and have plastic shoes. Just need to make the pull mechanism at the cab end. Where these fitted with vacuum brakes for the the loco? I have also got the cross heads and connecting rods finished and ready for the rest of the valve gear. The body. Well boiler and smoke box are joined and fit nicely to the footplate. I also fitted the saddle. But looking at photos yesterday it is too long, about 7mm needs to be removed from the rear. I may well screw the boiler on. The firebox needed to be soldered to get some rigidity in the footplate. Hopefully next week the mojo may return and my little now having recovered from his ailments will allow us to sleep more. Off to get a new compressor next week so might get some of my backlog of Painting done. The old one worked for 10 minutes then tested for an hour. There's the 0395 and the MR1262 that need finishing, and Thomas has not even been primed. Then lots nice lining.

N15class
Been a while with no updates I've mainly been posting on WT. Here's a catch up to the last photos taken. So let's start. I was checking the castings to see what was usable, what could be tarted up, and what needed to go in the ballast box. Being already sidetracked I decided to see what could be done with the front footplate oilers. This is what came in the kit. Maybe 30 years ago good enough. But not now. So this is what I made up. The main castings were in my stock box, luckily they are different on each side. I only had one of each. The atomiser on the left hand one is scratch built. There is a bracket wit 2 small oil pots on, between the the larger ones and the smoke box saddle. There's one for each side. Carry on with parts rather than the main build. The food was next. This is now ready once some of the parts are fitted within the cab. I was going to make it removable but there are handrails that attach to it, and it's not a brilliant fit. Will be ok soldered on though. The steps were assembled. I also made new new supports for the expansion link for the frames. The old ones were badly cast and too short. Back to some actual assembly I added the Steam pipes. They came with the kit and still need a filling. The flanges are scratch built. The lamp irons and front drop steps were made and fitted. And a trial fit of some cab to make sure it would work and not need remaking. More soon.

N15class
Time for an update. I have scratch built the firebox side ejector. As the cast white metal one was pretty anemic, so now resides in the ballast box. Here is the business end. Then the pipe. This is detaches as I need to be able to remove the boiler. Next up was adding the steps and other small brass parts. There are a few more small brass parts to go. And some smaller white metal castings. The chimney, dome and top feed are fixed. I also started to reassemble the frames and parts already made for that. As I wand a change from the body. Also needed to make sure both parts still fitted together with the extra parts added. Hopefully more soon but workshop time is very limited. This is the ejector that came with the kit. As you can see not very detailed. RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted October 18, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 18, 2018 Hi Pete, that's some very impressive detailing work! Haven't visited Western Thunder for a while, must wander over for a look.
N15class
Seem to be spending more of my social media time there. Seems to be more modelling going on over there. Also a host of talented guys to learn from.
N15class
Well the jubilee has had a slight accident, it seems to of fallen into a pot of primer. Well most of it anyway. There are still the wheels, and a few of the smaller parts to do. I have to get them done before I get the airbrush out as I have loads of things that need to be painted in cellulose black. Before the enamel colour goes on. Backhead still needs making but there is plenty to do before it needs fitting. Time to clear the bench, and the rest of the mess in the workshop. There are hundreds of spare parts to put away, leftovers and ones from stock that may of been of use. It's surprising how many there are after a 4 loco session. After lots of painting and lining the next loco will be a LNER F1 from a Gladiator kit. It was going to be Saint class. But after fitting with the jubilee and the MR 1262. I want something easy. The Saint is made up from at least 3 different manufacturers. With no instructions, that though doesn't always mean that much.

My workbench looks like a war zone at the moment ( there's a Hornby Castle Loco Chassis in bits on it, plus the other parts of it on the Fire Place Mantle Piece), however if I tidy it up - I can't find anything!
N15class
I know that feeling. I'm trying to be logical this time.(so even more parts list I expect). As I will lose a third of the room for the layout.
david.hill64
Jubilee looking good. I have to say I am looking forward to your F1 build: I cannot remember seeing a build thread of this yet. I probably need a box label too......
RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted November 7, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 7, 2018 I threw out some age-old spares recently. Hadn't touched them for years. Yesterday I found I needed exactly those parts. It never fails! I'm looking forward to the layout Pete
N15class
Jubilee looking good. I have to say I am looking forward to your F1 build: I cannot remember seeing a build thread of this yet. I probably need a box label too...... Thanks David. I'm looking forward to the F1 I make less LNER locos than LMS. Plus I'm sure the kit will be a breeze. I've heard good reports about other ex Northstar kits. I am undecided whether to build straight out of the box or fit radial boxes front and rear. Try and calm down the old 0-4-0 waddle. Will get the box out over the weekend and see what's what. At least it will be easy to paint either black or black lined red. Fortunately I the yeadons book which covers it from when I rebuilt a poorly made exNBR G9? You are more than welcome to a photo, if it looks good enough for the box lid. It never fails! I'm looking forward to the layout Pete Isn't that just the way. A lot of my white metal casting get recycled into loco ballast. I have more than once melted a part down only to find it would of been ideal for the build. When I moved to Brazil I had a hard time thinning down the spares stock. Don't want to have to do that again.
N15class
Whilst waiting for paint to dry I started the F1. So far I have just pressed out the rivets, all 1600+ of them. How I long to get back to my LSWR locos. I have also decided to make proper radial axel boxes for it. I think they help stop the 4 coupled waddle. Photos of both F1 and jubilee when there's something to show.
N15class
Time to start the Gladiator LNER F1. This is an ex Northstar kit. I will be building almost out of the box. The main change I am making is to change the ponies in the kit to radial axle boxes. I am doing this because I prefer the way they work and it is easier to reduce the 0-4-0 waddle. According to the instructions the F1 was built in 2 batches. 24 in the first and 12 in the second. The later cannot be built from the kit. A final 3 were then built. Which are the same as first batch. 3 were superheated but this was remove But the slightly different frame extensions remained. Originally they had round top fire boxes. But all had been changed to belpaire by 1929. Non carried BR numbers but a few had them allocated in the 67xxx series. Right what's in the box. The etches are crisp and clean. The frames are in nickel silver, and the body in brass. There are two boilers both pre rolled. The white metal casting include two backplates, and a choice of chimney. The brass castings include some of the more fragile parts. And the usual assortment of wire, nuts, screws and axle bushes. I also have the wheels motor and gearset. I've made a start on the radial boxes and punched out all the rivets. Edited November 29, 2018 by N15class
jazz
I've always found North Star kits very nice to build. Looking forward to seeing this progress.
N15class
A start is made on the main frames. Two little problems turn up. First is the axle bushes are too small for the holes. Luckily I had 4 that fitted. The pony ones are replaced anyway. Secondly. The ash pan runs behind the springs except it doesn't. They are both two layers soldered on inside the frames, so both are same height. The ash pan spacer was doubled up, using spare fret. this spacer and a spring hanger also want to use the same space on the frame. I shortened the ash pan spacer to maintain the strength of the spring hanger. This shows the problem. How it all went together. Back tracking slightly. I built the radial axle boxes before starting the frames. The front and rear are slightly different.i aslo messed up the front one by getting the axle position wrong. Fortunately it was quite easy to rectify. Now I said I was building the rest out the box, after making the radial boxed. Well I decided that it would be even better with 3 point compensation. So the rear driver will be centre pivoted. And the motor will be hung on the front driver.
david.hill64
I was going to give Mrs Gladiator a slap for packing the wrong bearings, but the photos show that it isn't one we packed. Geoff will have to spend a few minutes on the naughty step. We use two different types of bearings: the ex-Fourtrack kits have bearings with a smaller OD than the rest of the range and I guess these were packed in error. N15class
I was going to say it's pre your packing. But it does highlight how careful everyone needs to be. Fortunately I have probably 50 spares in 30 different sizes. I'm lucky as I collect all the odd bits and pieces I can.

N15class
So do I Peter, trouble is I now have seven boxes filled with odds and sods and takes forever to try to find a part I may need. I occasionally reorganize mine to try and get associated parts in the same trays. The trouble then is a month or more not finding anything.
N15class
Now for an overload of pictures. First off the MR 1262 is now black just need to do the buffers and inside of the frames red, the details and the lining. So still quite a bit to do. Next up is the Jubilee. Now in black and green. Again the buffer beams need to turn red. The lining and details need doing too. Now it seems I have some four locos that need lining and finishing. Suppose I ought to stop playing on social media and get on. 7
