Hi.....

Hope all are well....feeling chilly out there now....('can't be normal' according to the media....strange I've often experienced cold weather in spring but maybe it's me just being 'normal')....?

Update on Cambrian Street for this evening.......

  • weathered the sides of the rails on the main up/down and the acceptance lines, prior to ballasting.....
  • taken the 'snow white' appearance off the speartop low wall......
  • initially tomed down the appearance of the Wills wall to take off the red colour....
  • and finally for tonight laid down the base layer of ground surface for the yard area around the office.......will apply weed/ grass colour at some stage but will research ideas on the RMweb forums.....

Comments as always appreciated guys.....

Have a great Bank Holiday if you've the day off.... if like myself you're working 'have a good one'!

looking good Bob. With grass I tend to avoid spring and summer shades as they tend to be a bit bright and go with a mix of the autumn and winter shades but you can always tone it all down with a quick blast of dirty turps from an airbrush.

Hi All.....

Do have these Javis Scenics mixes that I obtained from Penn Models in Kingswinford, this primarily a Model Aircraft / Vehicle Shop but has an excellent range of modelling tools/ items and great, helpful, knowledgeable staff too.....

Will use these two, one a mid-green coarse grass and the other a dark brown scatter mix together with sand as a carrier....will let you know how it goes.....

Hi......

Here is an image of the three base ballast mixtures......these are my own 'test'......made up of Scenics medium grey ballast, 'oven baked' horticultural sand and a unconformed mixture of sand and Arley locomotive ash.......

104_2476.JPG.02c963628045536b65cc21906255b7c9.JPG  104_2488.JPG.0cdb0ee7c0ca355043e1b933cee3b22a.JPG

104_2479.JPG.d5f52598a622df9ef0eee0a8c39fa889.JPG

This mix has been spread over the main lines and to be blended into the ash yard and then when 'set' in the time honoured way, will weathered and toned as required....

Here also is a 'fly through' of the area as it stands at the moment.....comments as always appreciated......

Regards always....

Evening Guys....Hope everyone's Bank Holiday Monday has been good, if you've been off.....however, as many others have been also today, I've been working so it was good to be at home this evening and able to do an hour on Cambrian Street....

Just one further small step ahead, applying a 50/50, water/pva setting mix to the ballast around the station approaches and yard area.....will allow to set and 'report back' probably Thursday evening if able.....

Hi Bob,

Does your layout come into contact with direct sunlight? Only reason I ask- is because on a previous layout I used some of the javis scatter in the past I'm afraid mine faded after only a couple of months. I think some matt varnish helped to slow things down a little bit but it's obviously not ideal!

I may have just had a bad experience, but I'd hate to see you go to all that effort on your excellent layout and then find yourself pulling your hair and scatter out in equal amounts in just a few months time!

More experienced modellers than me may have some tips to stop it happening. Maybe mine was just a one off as Javis has been a popular sight on our modelling shop shelves for donkeys years.

Hope I've not put a downer on anything...

Best regards

John

Hi John.....

Thanks for the 'heads up' on fading scatter materials.......the layout is in the 'west wing' of the house :), so thankfully isn't in direct sunshine for much of the time at all, until late in the day when it can receive sunshine in the summer evenings, but there is a vertical blind that stops this for much of the time it's out.....

Still pondering the best buy available, purchased this Javis scatter material on impulse...so may not use.....?

Thanks for the kind posting...advice and experiences much appreciated indeed...

Regards always...

Bob

Hi

Meant to upload these clearer images of the 'fixing ballast ' area instead of the one I uploaded...so here they are......currently remains damp so leaving well alone to 'go orf' !

Off to the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway with some of 'the lads' from Arley tomorrow for a 'jolly' travelling on their cushions for a change, hope the forecasted rain clears quickly through the morning.....!

Evening Guys.......

Just an interesting diversion from Cambrian Street for this update, even so picked up some inspiration from a visit today travelling on the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway from Cheltenham to Broadway and return.....splendid day on a lovely heritage line......

Firstly not all ballast is grey...especially when it's recently laid....!

Hi....

Just to say that I haven't forgotten you kind guys.....had a glance the PVA / ballasted area this evening and the whole section remains quite 'fluffy' and unset.....so will leave alone to set further......the ambient temperature in the room has dropped back with the onset of this cooler weather and with little evening sunshine, coming in through the vertical blinds in what would normally be a warm, westerly facing room this is probably increasing the time required to dry and harden perhaps....

Evening Guys........

104_2595.JPG.1d0606fffccb5247552b28454b1bff35.JPG

The ballast is nearly dry but not quite, so will leave well alone.....

Here's the station platforms as they 'stand' at the moment, the 'local' platform is the likeliest candidate for modelling first to provide some experience on construction before moving on to the main station surroundings....?

Will update on both the ballast and thoughts on 'platform 4' when able.....

Hi Bob. Looking good mate.

What buildings are on the platform? I would sketch them in first and then add the canopy onto those mate. Oh and don't forget the signal positions either.

Evening Guys....

All well I hope...?

Thought I'd post this for info......in the planning stages and as always would appreciate input, advice and suggestions......this is all very 'theory' as I will be taking this gently, researching possible locations for inspiration.....

104_2608a.jpg.c3c54f4b7cfcca74be3d0539a8ddde00.jpg 104_2608aa.jpg.420e935bc816cc681089880ff6186f8d.jpg

The two platform dimensions here are approximate...  plans are to install a passenger subway fro access to all platforms (grey squares)....

......a reconfigured platform 4 end with spear top fence for passenger protection......

a full canopy over central column support, but wall length support to left, will need to 'turn the corner too at the end of the platform....

buildings do not feature on this platform but with seating

signal position shown.....

Very much a rough work in progress,,,,,suggestions and comments appreciated.....

The ballast is dry nicely....

Regards always.....

Hi Bob,

Just a thought-at the back of the platforms/wall end is there enough space for passengers to walk round?

If so I’d be tempted to make them walk round...bit like Kidderminster on the SVR?

No worries if not just an idea to save your subways :)

Hi.....

There is space indeed and will post an image later of the far ends for reference later this evening......and you are quite correct, passengers can walk round, then over footbridge to gain access to station buildings........maybe I am being over designing....?

Cheers an regards as always....

Better over than under in my opinion Bob. I tend to over engineer everything but I make up design in my head so.......

Evening Guys......

Hope all's well....?

Update this evening concerns latest work on the ballasted area and beginning to extend into the station throat.....

You know that I have always had 'concerns' regarding my abilities to use wire / tube point control on the double / single slips, having indicated that I would be quite 'happy' to leave these to be thrown by hand.....?

However, I have bitten the bullet and decided not to give in to my lack of self confidence, so have begun to work on a double  slip to indeed use wire in tube to operate the throw, have channelled out the cork to house the tubing and attached the control wire to the clipped pin head of the control bar, this being given a light 'kiss' of glue to deter this being pulled through accidentally.......will update as 'progress' is made......

104_2638.JPG.f686e5168a858c09f4eaa3d7e0d3c9c1.JPG

also for the time being whilst I also gather ballasting experience, around the points, I have painted the area where one would normally ballast in grey, this area to be ballasted in the usual manner when I feel confident to do so around the sensitive areas......shown here....
