BobM
Hi All.... Just a post to bring you up to speed..... The intention is to take the 'paved area' only as far red line, and thereafter the platform surface will be 'ash or tarmac' with a brick edge to the white 4'x2'...? Have a great weekend, stay safe, stay home please my dear friends and model! Regards always... Bob
BobM
Hi..... Comments appreciated on the intention to form the remainder of the platform along similar 'lines'...? Ash...rather than tarmac? Thinkin also of using the sand / loco coal ash medium used on the goods yard surface as the basis for the surface, Regards always Bob
380John
Hi Bob, I think it will look good. What about a suitable grade sandpaper coloured and weathered? That might do the trick and much easier to do a dummy run and see if you like it or not? John

BobM
Evening guys..... Will retrieve the DAS clay from its container in the fridge and undertake a little further grouting of the slabs on platform 1 now that the edging is down.... Regards always, stay safe guys..... BobM
Hi... Just an observation....DAS clay straight from the fridge is much more malleable than on opening? Bob
BobM
Evening all...... Have 'grouted' the slabs, will allow to set prior to a light sanding down and grey undercoat, a few of these slabs required resticking as they came away as the clay was rubbed in, seemingly not enough adhesive used initially? Will let you know how I get on.....! Regards always....stay safe... Bob

BobM
Morning all... After an early and interestingly different experience dental appointment first thing this morning and a shopping stint, have spent a while lightly sanding down the residual bumps an lumps of DAS clay from the 'tile' paving slabs to smooth..... Have some Tamiya acrylic Deck Tan which should be okay as the base colour for the slabs....? However the intention is firstly to place down the 'ash' surface, oven baked silversand being used as the base which then will be coloured with Arley loco yard ash. Regards always.... BobM
Afternoon.... Have applied pva to the surface of the areas which will be formed to represent ash, and sprinkled over silver sand, which when dry will be given a preliminary grey wash. Regards always Bob Edited August 6, 2020 by BobM 2
BobM
Hi.... Have applied a wash of thinned dark earth to the sand which is to for the base colour and which has soaked in and is in the process of drying, after which as scattering of baked sand and yard ash is to be sprinkled on, which is lighter in colour, finally a smattering of drak loco ash for contrast, as per the goods yard surface? Regards always Bob
BobM
Evening Guys....... Here's the current 'state of play'...... Hope to paint the slabs in Deck Tan later? Regards always Bob Edited August 6, 2020 by BobM

BobM
Evening guys...... Advice time please guys....... Have reached this point..... Have followed a similar steps used in the forming of the wooden platform and the granite steps.....but halted as I am unsure how to proceed with platform slabs, so any advice would be gratefully appreciated in terms of both colouring and perhaps dry brush forming...? I have applied a base colour then removed it with both light sanding back and a with a fibreglass pen, but unsure how to move forwards? Considering taking it down further with sandpaper and the pen to get the base colour even? Further work yet to be done on the ash surface too? Regards always Bob Edited August 7, 2020 by BobM
380John
I think it looks pretty good. I'd be tempted to try mixing a suitable colour then apply it with a sponge to get an even tone and one that resembles the texture of the prototype. Personally I'd then use powders to pick out individual areas. John
RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted August 7, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 7, 2020 So Bob. Pick 3 colours. Paint individual slabs at random with the two darkest colours. Once dry, dry brush with the lightest colour. Then when it's all dry rub a dark mortar colour weathering powder into the whole thing and wipe off with a damp cloth. Same as you did with the sets and the brick walls mate. The same technique applies to all surfaces Bob it's only the colour choice that's different. BobM
Hi..... Thinking of perhaps two shades of mid-dark grey and a lighter grey/tan to highlight? Any need to remove a little further of this base with light sanding, I think it's a bit 'heavy'..? Regards always Bob
