Hi......

The intention is to use the Humbrol light stone 221 as the base and final colour, and utilise matt 29 to produce the two further darker shades....Will post the results and steps taken....wish me luck!

Regards always guys, stay safe...

Evening guys.....

Hope you're all well.....?

Hope that these images will show the work done this evening.....?

have used the light stone as a base colour, to which  matt 29 was added to produce the medium colour and then further matt 29 mixed in to give a darker hue.....these were applied in a random pattern to cover a small percentage......these will be allowed to dry prior to the overall dry brushing with light stone.....?

Comments appreciated....

Evening Guys.....

Have applied a dry brush of light stone......

Comments appreciated.......

Light going over with fibre pen and another dry brushing or just further light stone, perhaps leave alone and apply  weather powders?

Fantastic Bob! Only a few weeds if any I think. Platforms and their surroundings were immaculate back then weren't they? Although a small representation I think would add to the realism, as I imagine a warm summer might have made it difficult to keep on top of the odd weed!

HI John....

Thank you for your kind comments, now thinking of just the indication of moss between the joints and a bit of emergence rather than full blown weeds.

At Arley no matter how much we pull them out dandelions and thistles still 'wave' at us occasionally....

I have a few tubs of Erigeron karvenensis about the station, this seeds itself everywhere in the garden and appears in the cracks of the paving as well as the crevices in the base of walls...it is a lovely plant though....just needs trimming back when it fades and it keep coming!

Not thinking of replicating this though on Cambrian Street...

I have to agree with 380John Bob. They weren't big on weeds back when your layout is set.

There would have been plants in tubs and hanging baskets but not weeds. I would also go easy on the moss as well. Maybe just on any north facing roofs. There would have been lots of staff at a station that size back then and the Station Master wouldn't have been very tolerant of weeds and moss around the station environs, someone would have been delegated to deal with any such things. Corporate image was everything back then. Every Station Master would be vying for best kept station and woe betide anyone slacking off on keeping the station looking spick and span.

We've an SM who is very keen on us entering the best kept station competition again, an accolade we were awarded a few years ago by the HRA....George Batchelor the SM of Arley back in the 1900's kept winning the best GWR station for nearly 10 years until he was banned from repeated entering......we try to emulate his achievements these days on a smaller scale within the garden at Arley...

Hi Bob, don't forget that back in the day weedkillers were not eco-friendly, and were extremely effective at killing everything, and they were used generously by railway companies. A visible weed would be an affront to any prideful SM :)

Contemporary photographs rarely show any trace of weeds or moss on pavements and platforms.

Arley...

Back in the early 1900's SM George Batchellor can be seen here at Arley with his two young children on the down platform. Those station borders must have been  'heady' with the scent from those roses and flowering shrubs behind them...it's a pity that the treeline shade generated within the gardens today (although lovely) does sadly cut off the necessary +6hrs of sunshine that these roses would have enjoyed and so obviously bloomed to perfection as a result.

The state of play....

and to bring you up to speed on my ideas.......

green area would be SM's garden/ private space, red would be station forecourt, for display of period buses and cars / horse & carts / people and the grey the street scene back to back  houses  perhaps...? White arrow station entrance.... any good?

I can't think of anything better Bob. I prefer the larger SM's garden to the narrow one but that's about it.

Hi All,

Thinking that the general station forecourt and approach will have a cobbled/ set surface, merging into Cambrian Street....which will probably have low relief buildings to the edge...
