I have put my pre-order in for some blue and grey mk1 open standards as I reckon these will sell.out rather quickly.

Still can't make up my mind if I want any Intercity ones though, they look great but would they have appeared in general use in the late 1980's in the Highlands?

Hello John,

I am pretty sure the Mk1s that were refurbished into IC livery were air-braked only (may be proved wrong on this!), so in the 1980s would not have been in regular use in the Highlands - I certainly don't remember seeing them.

They were used in the early 1990's, for example in the summer of 1992 the 10.30 Inverness - Edinburgh and return was often formed by a rake of these coaches.

They occasionally appeared in Scotland on relief and charter services, or perhaps in place of Mk2D coaches on Anglo-Scottish services.

Regards,

Paul

the new inter city mk1s look very smart.  other versions to follow. wonder if fairsh would ever so far as to release white roof inter city charter versions?

As it's not too hard to get the roofs off for painting, i'll be converting some to make the 'executive set/charter rake'

I'm certainly not paying £43 for 3 dirty coal wagons, silly price. It will need 30% off to tempt the money out of my retired pocket book. Even more frustrating is that I read on the Farish Official site that the smart new BR Standard 4 Tank has gone back to March or April 2016 and not this Christmas. I think it will be an August 70th Birthday present.

But that's just me sounding off frustration.

Happy Modelling,

They occasionally appeared in Scotland on relief and charter services

ICHX (InterCity Charter, with white roof)

At the end of the 1980s -

There were four Vacuum Braked FO, based at BN

There were two Vacuum Braked FO, based at CL

There were eleven Dual Braked FO, based at BN

There were eight Air Braked FO, based at BN

In the early 1990s, only the Air or Dual Braked remained, all 25 based at BN

Several FO were declassified, for some reason 3 were never renumbered

ISTX (InterCity Special Traffic)

At the end of the 1980s -

The first rake of 10 SO/TSO (9 plus 1 spare) was all Vacuum Braked, based at OY

In the early 1990s the above rakes were transferred to Regional Railways, causing confusion over their actual duties

However, InterCity Charter Trains retained all the SO/TSO which were Air Braked

I suspect it is one of these Regional Railways sets that was used in Scotland, whilst the Mark 2 coaches were being resourced / painted

I certainly do not remember seeing any, so it may have been very brief

Equally, I do not have any photos of such a rake during this period

IC liveried Mk1s were in use in August/Septerrmber 1992 at least on the morning Inveness - Edinburgh. At the moment I can't scan in photos of the trains unfortunately, but I doubt you would be able to identify any individual coaches. The  vehicles had 4 x 4 seating and blue/purple seating material,. I don't recall seeing them on Inverness to Aberdeen services, and they didn't seem to get onto any of the other diagrams either. I think this service was hauled during the summer only, and went back to a 158 at the end of the summer, hence drafting in this rake.

Cheers,

Paul

IC liveried Mk1s were in use in August/Septerrmber 1992 at least on the morning Inveness - Edinburgh

I have now found out why, and now understand why I never saw it!

This was the transition period where Class 156 units took over loco hauled services, and this left the Inverness services without any rolling stock

Early in 1992 there were two ScotRail (Regional Railways) livery sets

In the summer this was increased to a third rake, and so a third set was drafted in

The following year a ScotRail livery rake was available, to supplement the Class 158 services

Hi all,

I was wondering, are there any exterior differences between MK1 SO and TSO coaches? If I'm correct Farish hasn't done any blue/grey TSO coaches yet, so could a SO be used instead?

At least one Farish 'SO' listed above (M4946) is a TSO so don't rely on the labels (4880 and 4784 were SO's). The bodies of SO's would have been the same as a TSO from the same time (both changed thier external appearence between the early 50's and early 60's).

Farish have released two numbers on the SO/TSO in blue and grey with a third one imminent.  When they do arrive buy them as soon as you see them as they sell out very fast and become rarer than hens teeth.

Returning to InterCity Mk1's in Scotland for a moment, Page 28 of Diesels in the Highlands shows 37406 on the Mallaig line in July 1992 with a three coach rake.  The second and third coaches are Regional Railways liveried (but ScotRail branded) Mk2's, the lead coach however is an Intercity Mk1 BSK although the Intercity name is the Swallow version but that can be easily altered on the model when it emerges.

Hello John,

I have also found several photos of 37/4s (405, 406) during summer 1992 in Rail Photo archive with rakes including BSK, including one of BSO-BSK-BSO-BSO.

This was well into the sprinterisation era - I am wondering if the BSK was nicked from the steam set. From May 1989 the West Highland went over to 156s, although there was a Glasgow to Fort Bill relief on summer Saturdays for a year or two. I did wonder whether this might have been formed by IC Mk1s, from my distant memory, but I have found no photographic evidence to back it up. Maybe someone on here may be able to enlighten?

Certainly I am surprised there were any service trains in 1992 on the Mallaig extension, considering the almost wholesale introduction of mundane units from 1989.

Cheers,

Paul.almost

Somebody must be buying the Intercity Mk1's in bulk.  Just seen that since they were listed this morning that Hatton's stock of the Intercity TSO and BCK have plummeted to one and three left respectively tonight.
