Taigatrommel's chop shop: SW division 1980s

Recommended Posts

Dave,

You continue to be a huge help.  Thank you very much!  My tank looks a little short, luckily I have some tube that's the same diameter.

Nick,

I actually have some Hurst ends.  I bought them off ebay!  I decided not to use them, frankly, even the MTK ones look better.  Still, they gave me the inspiration I needed to actually start the project.  I've had the mk3s put by for over 7 years, and a Bachmann 158 chassis that's been waiting for a year or so!  Their power car undergear is also poor in comparison to Southern Pride, though the power bogie sideframes are pretty good.  I was pretty surprised to be honest, especially given other models I've seen made from Hurst products.  I'm not going to rush this project, I have an idea how I'm going to tackle it, but it will be one to carve away at when I'm feeling relaxed.

Rich.

I have plenty of 2Hap photos and underframe details.

Have you decided on a unit number yet?

Dave

Hi Dave,

It'll be a 4-CAP in the 3301-3311 series.

Cheers

Rich

You'll be taking all that piping off the roofs then except for the bog tank filler!

Again, thank you Dave.  I might call into York the week after next to have a look at the HAP there, and throw a few coins in the Project Commuter collection box.  They have some very useful photos on their flickr site, https://www.flickr.com/groups/2hap/.

I've replaced the windows in the 4-TC TFK, and painted the interior.  However, I don't know what colour the carpet should be. Still, this is RMWeb, if I post a question in the appropriate sub-forum I am hopeful for an answer.  With the window stickers in the place, I feel like it conveys a sense of 1980s BR... though it still needs window frames!

After a few failed attempts, I've made masters for casting the inner MU boxes on REPs and TCs.  Sizes are estimates, but it looks close enough to me.

The ones on the TRB are a different shape, and as there are only two of them I didn't feel it worth going to the trouble of taking moulds from them.  It's not worth the cost of rubber!  There are a couple of details I'm not sure about on these, what looks to be a connection for a shore supply above the MU box for instance, and the right hand side in the image below.  The other end (saloon end) I'm happy with.

I managed to drop the TRB having just primed it.  No damage to the coach, but I'll have to rub some down and re=prime.

You NEED the Extreme Etches frames unless you can shrink the NNK ones

No I don't, I can use Bachmann mk2 glazing- after all, the central section is from a Bachmann coach.  There's no need to shout and repeat yourself.

But you said you had bought the NNK ones?

I didn't want you to ruin the model

I had bought the NNK ones before I knew they were too small, but it doesn't mean I'll mess about enlarging windows to this wrong size - it just means that I won't use them.  Using Bachmann glazing (when I find some!) will provide a better match amongst the coaching stock for the layout, the NNK ones were simply a chance find on Phoenix's website while I was ordering paints.

Phew!

Sorry if it seemed I was obsessed but the ones I have seen using Bachmann donors also kept their glazing and look good.

I suppose it is hunt the stepped on and the crashed.

I will be Ebaying mine with a caveat.

Hope to order those vents early next year.

BTW I like the 4REP

Looking forward to your Mk2 progress as I intend on doing something similar when I get a chance.

If you want GM roof vents Southern Pride do some. I'm not sure which Mk2Cs carried GM vents, and which carried Roe-Vac.

G 5498-5537

GM 5538-5554

Roevac 5555-5615

Later toilets 5562-5615

Source is the Mark 2 book

All later toilets have Roevac

The REP is priority right now, I can't see myself getting more parts in before the new year. The 4-CAP is in primer, though I still need to work on the DMSL rooves.  The Mk2C is waiting me getting Roe-Vac vents, and deciding what to do chassis-wise.  I've lost my mk2 book and online pictures are thin on the group, so I don't quite know what to put underneath.  Having done some body swaps with Dagworth I now have mk2As rather than Mk2s for further coach conversions, but I'm not settled on a route to other mk2s right now.  I'd like a mid-1980s cross country InterCity rake, and have a selection of Mk2Es and mk2As, but there don't often seem to be more than one or two Mk2As in a rake with MkB/C being more common.  A mk2C BFK would be a good choice, and that really isn't a huge conversion from the Bachmann mk2A BFK, as little as two doors and the roof to change.

I've done a bit of painting on the 4-CAP and two of the 4-REP vehicles.  I haven't done any airbrushing for years, so I'm quite pleased that I haven't made a total mess of it.

I'm toying with spraying the 4-TC NSE, if I can find a pic of one in the livery accompanied by a 4-REP.

Hi ,

I recall using a Bob Moore pen and now have a Peter Spoorer Easi-liner pen, used both for N gauge orange lines, but not for a while as it happens, I recall comments about using humbrol paints, well stirred but unthinned. I guess pigment size as the SP pen is 0.25 mm dia.

A tip I was told was to clean and store with cleaning wire in delivery tube - it never blocks. Pen five years old and as good as day I bought it. - Whilst at a gauge one show in Bakewell.

Most of the 4-CAP is now lined and has lettering, though they need numbers yet.

I've decided the easiest route to Mk2B/C coaches is to create some etched sides for converting the Hornby Mk2Es, as these are a low price and easily available.  I picked some up from C&M models for £16.80 a piece the other day.  The sides I've designed should fit between the doors of the donor coach, and are designed to match Bachmann Mk2/2As in their window appearance.  In the interests of making my life as easy as possible, window frames and door handles are part of the main etching, with just the toilet window vents needing fitting.

Good idea with the etches. Will you be making them available to buy/other modellers to use? I'd be very interested in some.

I'll see how they come out before making that decision; the compromises I make to suit my own requirements could well attract the ire of some of the vocal modellers from the D&E gang.  I won't market them, but should the finished result look good to anyone else I'll certainly be willing to get a few other sheets produced for them.
