Not finished yet but I thought I'd give you all an update for those it may interest. Lots of progress has been made but slowed down from what it could by various other things in life. (Always the way isn't it? :? )

The J1 and E1 are coming along nicely, the J1 about 80% estimate and the E1 not so much. As the J1 was a rebuild of the E1 I thought it wise to crack on with the J1 until the optimum moment of advancement to jam the safety valves and blow a copy of the J1 to smithereens and only rebuild what is different - so that is what I have been doing.

Not much to show yet on the E1. You can see the different chimney's though.

E1%20amp%20Cam.jpg

With these J1 pics I coloured it roughly to give an impression. Since these pics more work has been done such as more riveting, a water filler cap and a lot of chassis progress.

J1%20Progress%20Red%203.jpg

J1%20Progress%20Red_1.jpg

J1%20Progress%20Red%202.jpg

Still plenty to be done but it is at the stage where it looks very much like it is supposed to. So now you have sen this there probably isn't any point showing you any more updates until it is ready.....unless I need to pick some brains, in which case.

Hope you enjoyed it, comments, suggestions and critiques welcome. :)

Great news.

May I present the Furness Railway's J1 Class Locomotive, now ready for order!

The chassis are nearly completed but some details need to be finalised before upload.

Also a very important note that must be understood: My computer has been having a real bubble trying to edit and process things due to the file growing insurmountably mainly due to the myriad of rivets. Not only have I been battling through countless hang ups and ridiculous slow down but when trying to integrate the backhead cab controls it glitched terribly and converts everything into a wire frame that I cannot do anything with. I was not able to work around this and so the backhead and some details sadly will have to go in an upload for purchasing separately, for this I can only appologise. However, as usual you'll be notified with any updates.

The J1 ran with several different chimney variants. The body kit comes with the small type, however the others will be available soon also. Rather than give all the bases, instead the base is moulded into the smokebox and the various chimney shanks drop in place allowing interchangeable looks and periods. The other advantage is the lowest lip doesn't have to be quite as fat like on a lot of model engines.

I haven't decided yet whether the chimneys should all be in one order or individual...or both options may be better. I'm open to suggestions.

I know many like to buy just the loco bodies and then either make their own chassis or meld/bash them on to RTR chassis so rather than waiting the body is ready now.

Anyway, although I still have work to do to get the other bits completed this essential is now ready. :)

Here are a few pics with a mostly completed chassis, some pics are partially coloured in, should help to give an impression of the finished machine.

Part 14

Final in the series. This shows the completion of the Freelance Variant body rather than the real thing but I'll get around to doing it in FUD or FXD at some point. Will also get some more pictures done when the time is right.

What the series has shown is a very simple way to build a loco kit as a fixed axle set, some ways of doing things and some not so good ways of doing things. Since getting a GW Models wheel press and puller life has been so much easier and accurate, but that is documented in the series too.

This is the original Furness K2 I built (You have seen it before I know) using the smaller boss head coupling rods and the smaller 3' bogie types, all as the cheaper and less crisp WSF material.

K2%20Fin%203%20J.jpg

And this is the completion of the V3 Freelance Variant built in the video series, also a WSF print but with the bigger coupling rod bosses and using the 3' 6" bogies.

WSF%20Print%20V3%201%20Brighter.png

As these were fixed axle 00 builds the next ones I'll be experimenting with to find a suitable compensation or springing method for P4.

I've recently ordered one of my new Furness J1's so it'll be interesting to see where this leads.

?   I don't really get what you are on about to be honest!

I've been low on updates recently.  Need to get some more updates done but been doing this N gauge VLOG and been busy with work and everything else.  Usual I guess.

Don't forget to clean it and prepare the surface. I'm guessing you saw my vids on it but I don't know, plus other prefer different methods. I find what I am doing has been working well though.

Looking forward to seeing it. :)

Furness E1 & Cambrian SPC Released at last!

Alternative cabs, safety valves, splashers, chimneys etc also are available.  These can be broken down into separate uploads too if anyone is interested rather than the sets, they are cheaper to bundle though.

The chassis will be released shortly and the tender hasn't been started yet but will be.

If there is any other genuine interest for 7mm versions please make them known and I'll probably do it.

Excellent.

Some queries.

First, are the two links in the last post the same and meant to be the same, or am I being a bit thick and missing something?

Second, presumably Frosted Extreme Detail version of the loco body will represent the smoothest available finish.  How does it compare with FUD?

Can you show examples of a loco in each?

My assumption is that with a locomotive, of all things, the better the initial printed finish, the better.

Third, is the tender going to be a pretty standard Sharp Stewart 4-wheel tender?

If so, I actually have 2 other loco projects that might benefit from one.

Finally, have you had any thoughts on motorising the J1 or E1?

It's be being a bonehead.  I  paste posts around several forums, sometimes I make a wee boo boo like the above.  Never mind.

I can't show examples yet as they haven't been printed although I will get to that.

Shapeways FXD is the best material the model is currently available in, followed by FUD and then WSF.  The J1 rivet detail in the FXD was perfect, it didn't take no where near as long to smooth than WSF and was significantly quicker than FUD also.  A good pic of the completed J1 minus builders works plates can be seen on the item itself...

https://www.shapeways.com/product/3ZEJJCRS4/fr-j1-body-fud-fxd?optionId=60548091

For the J1 there are several posts showing the progress of the FXD build and you get to see it in stages until final completion.  The E1 has almost the same geometry for the underside and the body and the chassis' as I used the completed J1 as the basis to rebuild it back to the E1.  For this reason much of it is the same so although I cannot currently show the locomotive in physical form the J1 provides good key point comparisons.  I'll be building an E1 in the near future anyway and will as always show the progress of that too.  As for motorising when I built the J1 I built a fixed axle chassis in WSF and then wanted to try out the MBS system that I developed so built another in that which was FUD.  It works and a video of it wombling along can be seen here...

the video also shows a selection of build progress pictures too.  For the MBS I do want to at some point upgrade it but until I can figure out a cost effective way of (probably CNC) milling them it will have to wait.  Etches won't work with MBS although a line of etched chassis for the SCC range may be sorted out at some point.  I need 16 hands though!

For the information how I built my J1 with lots of pictures please look here...

and compare to the FUD cleaning video...

4 wheeler it will be. :)

As well as the 4mm FUD release of the FR E1 & Cambrian SPC and as well as releasing the splasher, safety valve, chimney, cab sets etc to complete the versions; yestarday and today there have been more developments.

The 5 different splasher and cab types are also now available as separate choices, this is so you can target more what you want and need rather than waste if you only want a specific combination.

Furthermore, another version of the loco has been added, this time both in FUD and WSF labelled as 'BASIC' for the simple reason it is a more basic kit.  All the optional choices have been pulled off ready for individual components (as described above) to be added.  This body is also a little different inside the cab because the splashers have been completely removed and again these are available as separate items.  However, they are made available in 00, EM & P4 so now you don't have to bear with over the top large cab splashers if not modelling in 00.  The only quibble is you will need to file down the backhead controls at the sides if modelling in EM or P4 to accommodate the change, as a result another version of the controls has been uploaded too.

Here is the FR E1 & Cambrian SPC that was previously shown.  It is in one version so you'll have what's needed for this version.  However for the others you'll need to buy the relevant choices.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/Y9VNFTH6V/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-fud?optionId=63051105

To compare with below:

Here is the WSF BASIC version.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/4X8YWX96J/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-basic-wsf?optionId=63061395

Here is the FUD BASIC version.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/NTUTEY56L/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-basic-fud?optionId=63061182

Here is two examples of the splashers (5 total)

https://www.shapeways.com/product/NPY4RDSEP/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-splashers-closed-smooth?optionId=63061017

Here is the P4 splashers for inside the cab of the BASIC versions only.  Again, 00 and EM ones also there.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/RSDQQK7J6/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-cab-splashers-p4?optionId=63061343

Furness Cab

https://www.shapeways.com/product/F4ND8BEJU/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-cab-furness?optionId=63062146

Cambrian Cab

https://www.shapeways.com/product/Z87YF4EE2/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-cab-cambrian

Cambrian Small Cab (More like a windshield)

https://www.shapeways.com/product/Y3UCZRCEL/fr-e1-cambrian-spc-cab-small-cambrian

If there is any desire for individual chimneys and safety valves then they can be done too yet shapeways add a standard file price to every upload which is why it is often cheaper to offer them in packs, especially if sprued.

Pretty much all previous pictures have been destroyed due to Photobucket giving us the middle finger, thus over a decade of forums postings have been wrecked, not happy.   Please see the quick vid in my blog for more.  Apparently a few billion others have been screwed over too.

On the good news, the Furness J1 has now after some tweaking and improving on a few details been re-scaled to 7mm.  There is a chassis, a backhead, chimneys and also some seriously re-profiled coupling rods to compliment and complete the item.  The latter have been thinned out in areas and redrawn due to the extra space and printing tolerance 7mm scale offers.  However, it is still my intention to provide etches yet I haven't got around to that yet.

Furness J1 now also available in 7mm.

All the other bits can be found in the main loco's description links.

Furness E1, Cambrian Small Passenger Class (SPC) / Albion now also available in 7mm.

All the other bits can be found in the main loco's description links.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/VZKEUQ92S/7mm-fr-e1-cambrian-spc-basic

Chassis are still fixed axle at the moment, hole sizes and bits have been tweaked on all these to account for the scale changes.
