Used a few drawings but mainly the Pochin one and about 30 photographs etc. Data from books and the internet were collected to make the conclusion, can't remember all of them.

I always gather as many drawings as I can before designing as it has proved to be a consistent issue that they hardly ever agree 100% with each other, the photographs or published dimensions...and even they don't always agree sadly.

The majority of the design was from the drawings and photographs.

It was designed in 4mm and has been re-scaled up and down since. Some walls and details have been thinned out in the larger scales to take advantage of the extra printing tolerances.

Any use?

Not sure! Why didn't you consult with the Cumbrian Railways Association? The Pochin drawing have long since been discredited.

Not sure! Why didn't you consult with the Cumbrian Railways Association? The Pochin drawing have long since been discredited.

If they are discredited one wonders why the CRA continue to distribute the Pochin/Shillcock drawings from their website (fantastic resource that it is). Is there an alternative drawing available? In which areas does the Pochin drawing have shortcomings?

Does the finished model look right?

I've done CAD for a few models where there weren't drawings or those that were around weren't great and/or didn't match published dimensions. You do your best and interpolate from photos. If someone can pinpoint an error (and a correct source) it can be corrected, but sometimes I've done things where the records available are incomplete and every source is flawed, so you end up falling back to does it look right (after you've done all you can on accuracy).

I've also done CAD for a loco where no drawings were available and about 2 months after I finished a superb set were published. Sometimes what's done is done!

What Brack said, couldn't agree more. Whether the drawings are considered by some discredited or not doesn't bother me, anyone can say that. I'm not about to start again when I know what I have created looks just like a J1 and is accurate in many ways.

From my experience you gather 3-4 or more drawings and non of them agree 100%

Most details were from Pochin yet a few were from the others because they agree with photographs better. I gathered 3 or 4 drawings.

The Shillcock one is good too.

Sometimes you scale drawings exactly and some of the dimensions written on will be out.

There has been numerous times people use GA drawings and the finished loco is still wrong because history shows the real builders ignored or changed certain details.

I have found with other locomotives you may have a feature on a drawing that is 10mm and on another 12mm. WTF? Do you draw it to 10,12 or split the difference and go with 11? In some cases for certain details I have had to ignore the drawings and go with the photographs as they were perfectly consistent yet not one drawing was right!

Again everything Brack just typed I'd read it again. It's bob on.

You have to work with what you got and do the best you can.

I'll say this; it took me around 6 months to finalise the CAD for the J1. On and off but a lot of effort most days. It took ages mainly because of the rivets, photographs revealed AT LEAST 3 different rivet patterns so I had to pick one to stay with, then the sizing and positioning took a long time and then stitching them

Properly so they are truly 'solid' and printable also took a long time. The time took was exasperated by the rivets as the extra polygons slowed the computer down no end. If I group or explode all the polygons in one go I have to give it around an hour to do so...no joke.

Look at Hornby and Bachmann's Tornado or several kit makers attempts at an A1 for example. Not 100% the same in all areas. All very similar but profiles and dimensions may differ a wee here and there.

Interpretation, drawing skill and combined research conclusions provide the variances.

Bottom line is; does it look like a faithful accurate rendition of the J1?

If so please feel free to buy one!

If not by all means buy some one elses or create your own!

J1 2-4-2T sorted, re-modelled in a few areas. 1/64, 4.76mm, S Scale.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/K82V7TFCZ/s-scale-fr-j1-fud - The smoother more crisp version. The higher resolution isn't allowed apparently due to the model size breaching the bounding box parameters. :-/

That's entirely out of my hands sadly.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/P9NBTF4A7/s-scale-fr-j1-wsf - Cheaper one, rivets won't turn out as good

Backhead had to be separate, as it has had to be for all scales for the J1. Some details are rather chunky due to tolerances needing to be met.

As Shapeways have been increasing their prices for FUD/FXD items yet again I brought the Anycubic Photon 3D printer for doing resin sprints directly.
With around 30+ prints experience thus far I am offering most of the SCC range directly at a much cheaper price. For some pictures please refer to the 3D printing threads.

Spent a good while on this comparing prices and doing some test prints and slicing.

Also apologies for just annoyingly plastering it publicly taking up all the space but I do not know any other way, how to create download links etc. I'll happily email you a PDF though.

EDIT:  Thanks to Keith found a way. - https://www.scalefour.org/forum/download/file.php?id=19320 :)

Knuckles,

First off, your models are fantastic looking. The level of detail is impressive.

I was just curious. Is there anyway you'd consider remixing your E2X into a non-extended tank form?  Kinda like the E1X, but larger?

I like the E2's looks, but the extended tank form is a bit, err, overused by a lot of people.  Looking for something a little more generic for my layout.  Something that doesn't shout "Hey look it's Thomas" from miles away. I mean no offense, of course. I just like the idea of having an engine that has Billinton's style, but in a kinda not-so-iconic fashion.

If it's something you'd consider, then great. I would totally buy it, and maybe others too?  If not, that's fine as well. I'm a CAD designer too, and I get how much trouble it can be to change just the smallest things, let alone a major part of the design.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi Peter.

E2-X V1 or V2 mod?

I could.  Would take a while as you implied but I could pinch the modelled geometry from the standard E2 I created.

Please drop an email to sparkshot082@gmail.com and I'll happily discuss things further there. :)

Not sure! Why didn't you consult with the Cumbrian Railways Association? The Pochin drawing have long since been discredited.

I have been a member of the CRA since 1983 and I can say the Pochin drawings are held in high regard. They are certainly not discredited. Where is PB's evidence for saying this?

CR 812 4mm Body Shells: I'm now ready to accept 3D print orders for those whom it may interest. :)  Riveted and non riveted, also specify 00, EM or P4 as the cab splashers are set accordingly.  Chassis and tenders are still in development but for now the bodies are available.  Will finish off the 652 bodies too.

Quick render for painted impression.
nO2fAN7.jpg

As a reminder: For those of you in various online places who have expressed confusion and wonderment as to why I set out to make the 812 when there is a brass kit and an RTR model coming along;

as said before, ultimately I want to build 4 of these ultimately so it's a lot cheaper for me to do my own, on top of that the plan has been in my mind for around a decade so it isn't anything new.

Further more, I can re-scale these up or down if there is any interest so from my perspective it makes perfect sense.

Note about the blue render.

This is just a quick render to give an impression, not an attempt to show an accurate combination as indeed the Caley ones were smooth with a different smokebox door. You'll also see I didn't finish all the livery details for the same reason. A nice blue and white render looks better than boring black.

However, just for the sake of it here is it in black with a different safety valve and a number bunged on.  Again, just as a quick impression.

Boom, yup.  3.5mm H0 Scotty is released.  4mm one following in a day or two once everything is uploaded.

On the Photon can print everything bar the loco bodies at around 50% of the price although I haven't yet calculated the costs exactly but roughly that.

Loco bodies are a Shapeways only purchase currently due to the Photon being a smaller machine.  Will be buying a 2nd one soon.

Lovely model kits indeed.

If I may make a suggestion with what model is needed next it would be the Midland Railway 1116A Class 0-4-0st it's a much needed model and very cute and as Hornby have showed little shunting engine's sell very well.

Just a thought.

Created these four wagons a couple years ago for the S Scale Society.  Finally decided to release them in 4mm.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/EWLRFTBLU/4mm-gwr-10-ton-4-plank-open
https://www.shapeways.com/product/DM93X23UY/4mm-gwr-diagram-04-5-plank-open

https://www.shapeways.com/product/PKHMJEJA7/4mm-mr-d305-3-plank-open

Regarding the 4 recently uploaded wagons, I've ben talking in PM to Compound2632 who's very kindly spend considerable time unearthing some extra information.  Based on that, with these two....

https://www.shapeways.com/product/PKHMJEJA7/4mm-mr-d305-3-plank-open?optionId=157552067&li=shops

https://www.shapeways.com/product/N5QUSPGSZ/4mm-mr-d299-5-plank-open?optionId=157552069&li=shops

I've added the following notes to the descriptions:

Notes: These 4mm ones have been altered slightly from the initial CADs in that the number plates always appear on the right hand side as you observe the wagon.  Some details had to be thickened slightly or left out entirely due to 3D printing tolerances and design choices of over-scale visibility when the commission was taking place.
Also some of the inside bolts that would be countersunk have been made as protrusions so there is at least some representation of visibility, feel free to file them off.
Normal concessions although feel free to view the CAD in the 3D viewer, top right of the images.

I just received a Caledonian tender from SCC. The print is absolutely excellent, on a par with RTR stuff, and it arrived very rapidly after my order was made. I thoroughly recommend Gavin's Proton products. (I havn't bought anything from Shapeways so don't know about them)

04 Drewry Diesel – 3D Prints released!

Full bodyshells and conversion parts for a Wisbech & Upwell, and also ‘Mavis’ representation.

This project has resulted in me kindly being commissioned by Tom’ Waddell to certain specifications.

A Bachmann 04 was lent to me and the task was to make Cowcastchers, Sideplates and an earlier cab that can slot in to the Bachmann model with separate lamps to add to the cab after wasp stripe painting/transferring has been completed.  As the base model was on loan the sides and details were not filed down to give the Sideplates a flush fit as I didn’t want to ruin the clients’ model.

You’ll have to simulate a completed finish with your mind, here it’s posed with blue-tack.

p5ZZbrl.jpg

5QNSF54.jpg

Parts:

GFwitBZ.jpg

aNSOzTW.jpg

Also afterwards full shells were made, quite a lot of prototypes were done before I was happy with all the chassis fixings and quality of finish.

You can use a Bachmann split chassis 04 or Bachmann 03 DCC ready chassis, designed to self-tap the resin, many prototypes were gone through before the correct settings were found, around 7 or 8.  Usually can do things in 1 or 2 attempts but not this time. :D

VBBK4PG.jpg

The bodies turned out well but much better with thick side-plates printed separately, here is a final 3D printed example model minus cab and other details after a quick spray of paint:

xqi64Tq.jpg

Eww940a.jpg

LaQwYhi.jpg

Here are some CAD pictures of the Stove Pipe version, you can also not fit the chimney and have just the round base for it instead:

fH1BlPA.jpg

3asjh78.jpg

np4hycs.jpg

Here are some CAD pictures of the Saxa chimney fitted.  I’m aware this chimney with the early cab isn’t likely to be a real world example but it fits the way the character ‘Mavis’ was depicted in the Railway Series books so that will suit a few of us.  You can also use the Bachmann later cab with this chimney type for a later real world example.  This later cab may be created soon, undecided yet.

 ybjBR9f.jpg

T69S2oM.jpg

khey3MK.jpg

CULNWW6.jpg

On the non-Shapeways version of the 3D prints the side grab rails have had to be thickened up to fit their printing tolerances, similarly the ‘skittle’ shaped grab rails above the steps have had to be omitted and also the foot grip detail on the running plate.  Initially I tried to upload the model to Shapeways with the foot grip detail but the file size was too big for it to be allowed.  These finer details are thus reserved for the direct SCC purchase options.

su0dIR3.jpg

In time other combinations of cabs and body detail variations may be created but for now this is what’s on offer.

With the Shapeways options these are mostly complete shells to help reduce costs, the SCC directly printed ones are in more parts.

Shapeways 04 Drewry Options:

https://www.shapeways.com/shops/sparkshotcustomcreationsscc?section=4mm+04+Drewry+Diesel&s=0

For ordering direct 3D prints please email:         sparkshot082@gmail.com

Direct prices for the 3D prints:

Cabs, £12

Cowcatchers £6

Thin Sides-plates £8

Thick Side-plates with steps £14 (slightly longer, you’ll have to file more detail on a Bachmann model to fit as these are instead designed for the directly printed SCC 04 bodyshells.

Full bodyshells £44.89

These include a choice of 03 or 04 chassis fixings and Saxa or Stove Pipe funnel options, please specify which.  If you’d like to model the locomotive without a funnel you’ll need the Stove Pipe option and just not fit it on.  The Saxa options have their funnels pre-fitted.

With this you’ll get the main body, separate cab, separate lamps, separate thick side-skirts and separate cowcatchers. (Separate funnel also if ordering Stove Pipe version)

Postage Rates:

Within UK £5

Outside Most Places £10

Canada £13

USA £17

For a long time I have been getting away with charging a flat rate of £10 for outside UK orders but recently, especially for USA it’s gone up a lot sadly.  Found out the hard way one day!

Not every combination of the 04 has been made and most of what was made were to the clients’ requirements so in time there may be more.  For now though, this is what we have, please share this around if you like it.

I will be creating a tutorial video series on YouTube showing and walking you through my own build of the Diesel all the way to completion but not for a few weeks at least.

Thanks for reading

Not posted here for a while as I've been busy with other things, some related, some not.

On the design front the broad gauge collection is growing nicely, funded via commission works.

There's still more to be uploaded and another loco soon to be released.

Anyway, see what you think.

Photon loco body 3D Prints available for a cheaper price also.

https://www.shapeways.com/shops/sparkshotcustomcreationsscc?section=4mm+BROAD+Gauge&s=0

Also we have a nice painted up model of an 812, both the tender and body.

He chose to fit a Hornby Drummond chassis, very nice too!

Now released as a 3D printed body with some chassis options.

I haven't built one yet although the client who initiated the commission tells me the body and chassis are good and is in the process of doing so so I'd think so.   Not like it's my first attempt or anything!

I've painted the renders in a later LMS livery for potential effect. :)

Body:

Furness sections with chassis options:

There are actually two loco bodies uploaded as the client wanted one with a slightly bigger sunroof than the drawings had so I've linked you with the other.

To lid the sunroof a scrap bit of anything will do.

Seems this thread (amongst many others) has been visually trashed also due to the DEAD-iserve  issues.  Oh well.

Fresh start as of now.

A reminder if anyone is new to who I am:   I do 3D designing, and also 3D printing so if there's anything in my range or your own items you'd like 3D printing please bung an email to sparkshot082@gmail.com

There is a shapeways shop here:

https://www.shapeways.com/shops/sparkshotcustomcreationsscc

Yet a lot of items can be printed on own printers apart from them, also there are a lot of items not uploaded to Shapeways so really the range as it grows is split between the two.  Currently working on drawing some metal chassis as the 3D printed ones were only ever meant to be a stop gap.

If you click on the above link you can see some examples of what is on offer.

Well, I had decided to go “cold turkey” this month and not spend any beer tokens on anything model

railway related (especially having committed a lot of future beer tokens towards newly announced models that match my “hitlist” of interest!) but then your update appeared and I saw your Drewery tram loco bits…

Now got an active search going on eBay for a suitable donor model … the intention is strong but the willpower is weak!!
