E2 received today, good to see Shapeways skimping on packaging again, just about found it in there  ;)

Haha!

Had to laugh at that. It looks cute on the box. :)

What you think of it so far? Very much looking forward to seeing this progress.

Also an update...

Will periodically be uploading both the 4 & 7mm versions.

Cylinder covers will be a separate option purchase simply

because they conflicted with the chassis and it's the only

realistic way of offering them, they'd have to be filed to

fit your chosen gauge though. I can make the splashers as

a separate also if anyone wants them for scratch building.

On the models I have decided to integrate them as there

were no other types to my knowledge used.

The D1/Cambrian small goods looks superb Gavin, shall have to sort out getting one (and the E1) - though really must sort out getting the rest of the J1 first asap!

I ordered the E2 in FXD just to see if it's worth the extra few quid which it certainly was. Really crisp with very little tidying up required except on rear bunker and front and rear of cab but I suppose that depends on how Shapeways orientate the print. Looking forward to getting it up and running, many thanks for making it available in N.

Yes same here - that’s what I’d painted my A1 and Hudswell Clarke locos in anyway. Don’t think it wants to be as dark as the FR Indian Red though - perhaps more of a crimson colour?

Agreed that it’s a shame we haven’t got more to go on - but then again it does leave us to free to put our own outlook on things.

Some custom 3D printing on my own printer I offered to have a go at as a contribution...

At Coventry model railway club a guy built a goods shed extension canopy out of card for our Trowbridge layout. I glued some (I think) Wills sheets to the roof and said for the wood valances I'd 3D print something. The wood hasn't been painted in correct colour yet and the yellow is just the remnants of the primer (needs some smoothing yet) but I am painting the roof. Trying to give it the weathered corrugated look but without going OTT. I added some metal washes to make it glint.

Please see what you think...

I posted this picture before so the text and a couple of details on the splashers are out dated, however I might as well show it again now...

Uploads and releases have followed, see below.

Furness D1 & Cambrian Small Goods Class (SGC) has now been released in 4mm. 7mm re-scales and tweaks will be done in due time also.

I have integrated the splashers on both the standard D1 that is in a particular combination from the get go and also the BASIC version that requires you customize it with the other parts yourself to create the version you want. I have tried to balance the pricing here as best as possible but due to Shapeways' insisting on having a charge for every file upload on top of the item it is a little dearer to make a different combination if sticking to FUD throughout. I cannot currently do anything about this sadly. :-/

Anyway, Many of the optional parts are compatible with the E1 also so the previous set of cabs and chimneys and fireboxes are all interchangeable with the E1, D1 and Cambrian versions.

Also of note, the product renderings currently refuse to move where I tell them too, despite me doing it about 5 times already. It might take a few days I don't know. Usual mess about. You can view them on the 3D viewer anyway to have a good look at the meshes.

Listed below is almost the full run down, some items of which you may already have saw before as they are also for the E1.

To be ultra "picky", I don't think that I have ever seen corrugated sheets that big.

Good news on the D1.  With the Small Passenger Class, this enables me to complete my layout roster.

I have just ordered two of the Sharp 4-wheel tenders for other locos on the roster, which I shall tackle first, but I am very glad to see these locos.

Not being picky.Too many are fussy about getting correct number of rivets and other bit at correct angles, but fail totally when it comes to buildings.

I think standard max lengt for a sheet of corrugated iron would be about 6ft, possibly slightly longer to allow for overlap. Those overlaps are very visible especially on older buildings, and especially as we tend to view layouts from above.

I am not a perfectionist, just want to create an overall consistent and 'realistic' feel, and there are far too many blunders when it comes to buildings, which are far more visible than the detail inside a coach or loco cab.

Just don't mention 'bricks' when i am around!

To add another factor. I'm building the canopies for the club to a specific requirement.

I originally made several 2' x 6' corrugated sheets but due to the plastic thickness they didn't overlap neatly or convincingly so I was literally told "don't worry about it, just glue the sheets down."

If it was fully my own model I'd be folding loads of kitchen foil to size.

Re the two tenders, many thanks.

Wondered who it was. :)

These days you can order sheets in lengths up to 12m although the width is about 1m . The vertical overlaps would not be as visible as horizontal ones.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi Gavin,

The E2 is finished. It didn't take much work as the FXD I had it ordered in really is worth the extra £3. I hope you don't mind but I did make a few tweaks, I felt the pump was a little oversized so replaced it. With FXD the buffers, although excellent, were just waiting to be knocked off so I replaced them, cracking a chunk of the buffer beam as I did it! The front vents on the tanks also looked a little long so they were shortened. Lettering is the hardest as there are no longer any suitable transfers so I had to use the closest font available and still had to modify the B and S.
For those interested in the chassis the standard Farish one wouldn't let the body sit low enough so I chopped a load off and added a Nigel Lawson motor and brake shoes etc.

That E2 is stunning Gareth. It is a real credit to both your skill as a modeller and the designers (whoever that may be :P) attention to detail on the body!

Sorry I'm a bit late commenting on this. Have you considered not worrying about the overlaps and simply adding the paneling as a painted effect afterwards? I found this on the Humbrol Youtube channel some time ago and thought it looks pretty effective when finished.

OMG that E2 of mine....I mean yours is absolutely stunning. I can taste the dirt on the floor! Must put my tongue back. Seriously loving what you did there. I found with my N E2 the Farish chassis fits after a bit of inside body chewing although maybe a little high still, yet your motor replacement skills seem an even better option.

No worries on making a few mods. I don't mind at all, these are easy build kits and if you want to improve them feel free. Rule #1 etc.

Many thanks for sharing. Would you allow these to be shown on the website as a product shot? I'd very much like to if you are happy with it. :)

Lining and lettering looks so neat too. In fact to my eye it looks so good if I didn't know better I'd say it was an RTR engine. :D

-----

With the iron panels I might try that. Thanks for showing. :)
