hammy
Making a small layout for my mates little lad and was wondering what space 4 double length 2nd radius corners take so I know how wide I need to make the boards for a simple oval
Steve O.
Hi there Hammy, - this should be useful... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/44775-Hornby-track-geometry-drawing/ Cheers, Steve.
ChrisB
10 seconds on the Hornby website reveals that the radius is 438mm.
hammy
Yes but that's overall length not height if that makes sense
RMweb Gold JohnR Posted December 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 29, 2015 Yes but that's overall length not height if that makes sense Yes, so a circle of 2nd radius track will be twice the radius in diameter, ie 876mm across.
hammy
Cool all I could remember is pie r squared
Titan
Yes, so a circle of 2nd radius track will be twice the radius in diameter, ie 876mm across. As that dimension is to the centre of the tracks you will need to add a little extra for the track width and clearance, so an overall minimum width of around 975 would be better, preferably a little more if you do not want your track too close to the edges. RMweb Gold Trevellan Posted December 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 29, 2015 Agreed, which is why 6' x 4' tends to be regarded as a minimum for anything like a half-decent layout.
hammy
Very much constrained to area there is to work in and my mates lad is 3 years old. He just wants to see trains wizz round at high speed
Dungrange
High speed equates to being more likely to come off the track, which is why track on the baseboard edge is not the best idea. If you are going for an absolute minimum of 975 mm as titan suggests, then I'd be tempted to add a facia that sticks up above the surface to try and contain any errant stock.
