slg
I would check what services are continuing on over the diversionary route via Dumfries..could treat it as an interesting diversion to your day..and of course 45mins. Onward coach travel if used is on M74..motorway straight into heart of Glasgow and again about extra 45mins required and not a bad journey. Or if you are travelling from south west through Birmingham/Sheffield/Leeds etc normal service straight to Glasgow Central via east coast. Hope to see you there. Dave. Hourly service running via Dumfries and as I'm coming from Preston it actually adds 90 mins onto my journey time after 30 min wait at Carlisle. May try to see if Virgin will change tickets to an earlier train as I've never done Dumfries line.

May try to see if Virgin will change tickets to an earlier train as I've never done Dumfries line. The old Sou' West..its a great trip and full of interest. Years ago when the `Thames Clyde' among other expresses used it regularly on our day trips to Carlisle we would travel down via Beatock and return via Dumfries on the Peak hauled Thames Clyde. I think there might still be a few semaphores on the route plus loads of interesting engineering features including the famous Ballochmyle viaduct the longest masonry arch in the world. A proper main line in its time and will be again soon we hope. Dave
60159
WCML CLOSED TILL MARCH!!!!!!!!!! Rail Magazine just put on their site more damage found to the bridge, so it looks like I'm going to have to get a refund for my train tickets and miss the show for the first time in ten years. Don't miss it slg - it's our 50th anniversary show and I'm told there are 148 stands of which 57 are layouts. As Vitalspark points out, there will be ways of getting there, might just take a little longer .... but worth it.

Andy Y
Model Rail Scotland is pleased to present the 50th annual Scottish gathering of model railway enthusiasts for another prestigious event held at the SECC Glasgow in Hall 3. The dates for this years show are Friday 26th Feb – Sun 28th Feb 2016. As a special treat for our 50th show we have commissioned from Bachmann a class 08 shunter locomotive in Malcolm Rail colours. These models are available for pre-order on our website or to buy at the show. It is worth noting that when Model Rail Scotland last produced a limited edition model (ScotRail 158 in 2007) they sold out on the first day of the show, so it is worth pre-ordering to avoid disappointment. With around 30 member clubs of AMRSS this is the only show in the UK where such a large group of member groups pull together to produce a Model Railway show. In addition to our member clubs we also invite guest layouts from other clubs and private individuals across the UK. With such a large group pulling together it creates a great friendly atmosphere for which Model Rail Scotland has become renowned for across the UK. This year will see many new layouts from both the member clubs and also from guest layouts. With 20 different societies attending the event there will be something for everyone from the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, DEMU, Model Electronic Railway Group and Scalefour to name but a few. A vast array of trade suppliers will be in attendance – we aim to covering all modellers needs, form those just looking to start out in the hobby with box sets, track wiring etc to the finest detail modeller with scratch build materials all under one roof! Come along and enjoy one of the finest events in Model Railway exhibitions in the UK. The event opening times are Friday 11am – 6pm, Saturday 10am – 6pm and Sunday 10am – 5pm. Advance ticket holders can enter 30 minutes prior to official opening times. Ticket prices at the Door – Adults - £12, Child - £6 Family - £27 (2+2) Kids fun running / play layout. lmsforever
Why cancel tickets you can still get to Glasgow just be flexible and go with the flow enjoy the view via Kilmarnock or up the m74 either way its the very best show to attend great layouts friendly people and an enjoyable journey.I am looking forward to breakfast after Milton Keynes coffee and toast all the way to Preston and after Carslile coming home dinner and a glass of wine flew twice but never again rail is the civilised way to travel and the staff are much nicer. Well done for making the long journey north..I am sure you will not be disappointed. We travelled to Aylesbury with Alloa 2014 and can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable shows we have attended and recommend your show to all up here regardless of the distance. devonseasider
rail is the civilised way to travel and the staff are much nicer. As I said earlier in the thread, jackrusselDS is off to his holiday cottage for a few days while Mrs DS & I fly up from Exeter to Edinburgh & then "let the train take the strain" over to Clydeside to coincide with the show. Looking forward to the break away from the endless 'phone calls, the show, a deep-fried Mars bar (other chocolate treats are available) and the falling-down-water, not necessarily in that order! lmsforever
I have been going up to this show for the last ten years and it is the highlight of the year for me not just the journey but everyone I meet at the show friendly and happy, sadly the doc banned falling down water some years ago but still enjoy myself .Looking forward to seeing Alloa again fine layout. Portchullin Tatty
Subject to the printers delivering on their promises, Glasgow will also be the launch of my father's new book. The Dingwall & Skye Railway - a pictorial record of the line to Kyle of Lochalsh, by Peter Tatlow ISBN 978 1906 537463 @ £27.95 by Crecy Publishing Ltd. This does not seek to be a particularly heavy historical tour (Rails to Kyle of Lochalsh does this) but does investigate a few of the operational issues with the line and how it shaped this part of the western highlands. It is also a pictorial review of the line and is packed with photographs but, best of all for me, it includes a lot of drawings of the features along the line, structural, architectural and lineside. Merc435
Edit to the above list; "Inverboyndie" is owned and run by Greenock and District model railway club. Brian Thompson is the Chairman of the club.
lmsforever
Just had a conversation with Virgin and advised that I can catch the five twenty to Carslisle at Glasgow and join my normal train at seven something bit of a wait for my dinner then! At least its sorted out excellent responces from them .
Jim49
lmsforever, just passed Barrhead station on the Glasgow - Kilmarnock section of the diversion route. Area festooned with notices warning that the road passing below the rail overbridge at the Kilmarnock end of the station will be closed from Monday 1st Feb for 3 months for essential repairs to the bridge. This is due to corrosion on the supporting girders apparently. It is also where the double track from Glasgow becomes single between Barrhead & Lugton. What I don't know is how these repairs will affect the rail services, including diverted services, passing over the bridge. ATM Virgin are using Voyagers to provide an hourly service on this route between Glasgow & Carlisle (non-stop between Glasgow & Kilmarnock) but I don't know if this will be able to continue through the repairs. The information given to you today might only be valid until this weekend so I suggest that you check with Virgin again in case the service is suspended until the work is finished. lmsforever
Evidently the bridge work will be done at night so perhaps no rail disruption will be contacting Virgin next month to see new timetable.
Jim49
Working at night was the original plan but local residents complained and the work has been re-scheduled to be carried out during daylight hours. I will keep a look out to see what happens to rail services from next week and let you know. Jim

kingfisher24
Layout dismantled and difficult to access areas like the harbour tunnel are receiving some overdue maintenance to track work and points. No more wee DH 0-4-0 shunters entering the gloom and not appearing oot the other end..I think Mike managed to 'lose' at least three locos in there last time out!
