On this gorgeous summers day, 1093 has found some wagons to play with.

What a lovely NER loco, if you don't mind me asking, what's the class of the loco?

Is that a NER brake van in front of it?

I like the setting, it feels spacious.

Credit to you.

Just a bit of paint to touch up now, and the corner of the shed needs looking at.

You need a coal bunker somewhere...and a place to tip the ash

Only if there were such things at the real location. Surely the locomotive facilities were at the other end, at the top of the incline, to avoid unnecessary haulage of loco coal wagons etc.? I doubt there's much in the way of water facilities here either, unless the crew have a large funnel and are happy to wait for the tank to fill up with rainwater. Shouldn't take too long on most days...

The coal bunker would only be a small one for the staff in the goods shed...it gets mighty cold up there even in summer...they’d just borrow the odd bucket of coal from a passing loco...and over the years you’d get a fair accumulation of ash...tipped down the nearest embankment...the ash is probably still there if you go looking for it. Now that Paul’s got his chimney, he just needs the rest to go with it!

Ah! I'm with you now. But these are the ex-Vikings who nowadays are out washing the car on a freezing Sunday morning in January in their vest, waiting for their daughters to come home from Saturday night out on the town in mini-skirt and crop top. They don't need heating.

Have you ever come across a film call ‘Bowes line’ by Amber films? If follows a rake of coal wagons as they ascend and descend the various inclines on the NCB Bowes line...the fist thing the lads do in the morning is light a fire and get the kettle on...and hell yes it gets cold up in Rosedale, uncle Porsea comes from those parts and he took me across a short cut one night and we got stuck in the snow 20 yards short of the top...we tried driving backwards, side wards and off road...had to give in in the end for laughing too much.

Yep, same wagon, the other is a seriously filthy LNWR 4 plank, still in LNWR livery, it's lurking on the layout too, well, same type anyway.

The site of 'The Depots' was almost on telly last night, 'North York Moors: a year in the wild' on BBC 2 last night at 9 heavily featured Rosedale and the track of the railway. Also featured my old primary school at Egton Bridge. Check it out on the BBC iPlayer.

That photo superbly emphasises not just the bleakness but the sheer high-up-ness of the Rosedale Railway...

No trees were moved in the taking of these photos...

... which led me to wonder if the trees weren't recent, until I came across an 1929 photo. (Also No. 1860 so I suppose taken on the same occasion in 1929). Oddly, the 1891 OS 25" map shows trees on the bank below the railway but not the 1910 survey.

In that gallery, there's a splendid photo of C2 No. 24628 with shaded lettering.

I happened to catch the last few minutes of that with the quad bike in the snow on the embankment and thought "that must be the Rosedale branch"; a lovely spot.
