Thanks Stephen,

I was feeling rather disheartened when it happened last night as I was really looking forward to finishing the brake van (Not that I know what I'm going to do next).

Never mind, there is always next week.

  • BlueLightning changed the title to The Oak Hill Branch - LBSCR / SECR 1905ish - Joining the ranks of the 3D printers
  • RMweb Gold

Hello everybody!

Following some discussion about 3D printing the other day, I discovered that @ianmaccormac was upgrading his setup, and therefore selling off one of his printers, and wanted a very reasonable price for it, as a result I now have got myself and Elegoo Mars and an Anycubic Wash and Cure machine!

534931382_2020-11-3010_40_03.jpg.4c2b8b001f6fa7bd7e72054e8d61ea32.jpg

and this has proven rather exciting for me. However it does mean I need to learn how to make CAD for 3D printing, I spent some time messing around before looking at my list of what I wanted, I decided that whatever I first tried seriously needed to be

A) Reasonably simple, so I could start with simple shapes and work up to more complex parts

B) Small, so that I don't waste loads of resin when the first few prints inevitably fail

C) Something I need multiples of,because if I only need one, then why bother 3D printing it?

So with that I mind I Settled on an LBSC D.1753 dumb buffered ballast wagon (See "An Illustrated History of Southern Wagons Volume 2" page 61)

So I decided to go and rewatch the livestreams about using Fusion 360 to make wagons done by @TurboSnail, and fired lots of questions at @Skinnylinny, and have made what I like to think is rather good progress, I still need to get the underframe done, but I am very happy with how it is looking so far!

Looking at pictures I need 8 of these for my ballast train (and 2 ballast brake vans) so it seemed like an idea place to start, and hopefully will come out well (or at least well enough to use!)

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoyed,

Gary

Gary, Have you seen Mike Oxen's blogs?  His Pre-Grouping and his Broad Gauge one.  He has a 3D printer but he prints out parts then welds them together with a hot soldering iron.  He finds this useful as a) he does not necessarily have to make supports and the parts do not take long to print.  He also shows how he has made stuff and the mistakes he has made.  I think it is worth a look.

Hi Chris,

Yes I follow both of Mike's blogs, and find them very inspiring, I have plans to use the printer for smaller parts as well as full wagons like this, I'm thinking boiler fittings and the like to mix with more traditional modelling methods, after all I still need projects to keep my livestreams going.

Cheers,

Gary

Well following last weeks internet problems that made streaming impossible we are back this weekend hoping it will hold out, because my ISP are being super helpful and so far haven't even logged that there is a problem!!

Hopefully we will be able to finish the SE&CR brake van tomorrow night, otherwise I shall have some choice words for my ISP!

Join us at 9pm (UK) tomorrow to see it happen, as usual I'll be back tomorrow with the link.

You had your own ISP...?

I did indeed, for the best part of a decade I co-owned an ISP specialising in satellite and 3g/4g connections for rural locations, but also offering standard fixed lined connections.
