Runs-as-Required pointed me to another highlight of the line, this beautiful skew bridge ..... This was a revelation to me, as this beautiful bridge, which crosses not only the road but what I take to be the Knar Burn, is not pictured in the Oakwood volume on the branch. Locke and Errington made a miscalculation here: This photo was taken in April 2016, a few months after Storm Desmond. The stonework arch and brick lining have been swept away for 20 ft - 30 ft into the embankment, leaving the stonework facing freestanding. Another Desmond could take the entire embankment out. Its not like they made a complete baIIs up as Bouch did with the Tay bridge (which fell down barely 6 months after opening). (I forgot to ask) Who are the current maintaining authorities? Well, let's say this is evidence that they didn't fully appreciate the potential water volume after heavy rainfall on the fells. Not the only such instance - there was an early washout on the North British main line; a substantial bridge was built to replace the inadequate culvert. I wonder how often a lake had formed on the upstream side of the Crosdale culvert? It's also possible that the 150 years of intensive sheep grazing on the fells has compacted the soil, increasing the run-off rate in heavy rain. I haven't had a close look since 2016, perhaps this August. Most of the trackbed of the Ingleton branch has reverted to the surrounding farms, though there are several occupation bridges under the railway that remain place and in use for farm access. As far as I can make out (see here) responsibility for structures passed to the Highways England Historical Railways Estate on the abolition of BRB (Residuary) Ltd in 2013, with the contract for inspection being held by Balfour Beatty. Just goes to show how hard it is to abolish a quango - its functions are found to be necessary, so a new body has to be created to take its place.
