Annie's picture shows Deeley's 1000 as built - w/o superheater - this is the engine re-numbered 1005 in 1907, so not the preserved engine. The preserved engine, whilst purporting to be the first Midland Compound - i.e. 2631 - largely dates from 1914.

A thousand pages in Thy sight

Are like an evening gone

How did we manage that?  And, in modelling terms, I seem to have very little to show for it, so this is a salutary milestone.

This calls for Plan.

The neglect of CA may be said to span (i) non-functioning track, (ii) incomplete scenics and, (iii) no complete locos or rolling stock.  Quite shaming after 4 years.

I need to Focus my Efforts, so, I have chosen locomotives and rolling stock, and will concentrate on Five Trains, as the best way to take advantage of the meagre start already made.  I can flit between these trains, but must limit myself to them.

WNR No.1 Neilson 0-4-2T and Achingham 4-coach branch set

WNR No.2 Fox Walker 0-6-0ST and Wolfringham branch 3-coach set

WNR No.3 Sharp Stewart 0-6-0T and short goods train

BLT No.3 0-4-0 Kitson Tram and 4-coach Bishop's Lynn set

NMR mineral train

Once that is done, an Effort will be Made to finish the core village scene. My new printer should be up to the task.

Its wise to be clear about these things!

However, I like to think that the Parish Council have assisted you (in some small way for some and materially for others) in keeping the flame of Castle Aching alive.  We're cheering you on!

Hurrah!!!

And so to Page 2000.....

Yes, however take heart for never have so many branch lines been so successfully surveyed and built to their destinations - congratulations.

If in doubt always go for the earliest build of a locomotive, - that's my motto.  I was especially looking for Compound No.1000 without a superheater and that old painting came up trumps.

Back when I was but a young slip of a girl all my friends were building GWR BLT's, but I refused to follow the common herd so it was Midland red for me.

Yes indeed cheers must be offered up and encouragement given.

This thread has become a force in its own right and it must continue.  Onward friends, ever onward I say.

James,

Only four years?  I have been running six.  I do have a baseboard and working track, just about, but mine is readymade code 100, although with different sleeper spacing.

Scenics?  I only have one down shelter and half a cottage.

Rolling stock? One conversion of a coach and two scratchbuilt coaches, plus so much unfinished stuff.

Locos?  No Cambrian locos apart from bits of Shapeways plastic yet to be attacked, and one GWR conversion halfway through.

During the last six years I have not had children at home and only been working two days a week.

What I am saying is that you may not have achieved as much as you might have wanted to but then it is a hobby and time targets always slip so you are not doing that badly.

But should also be remembered for "Watkins Folly"* the foundations of which may still lie deep under the pitch at Wembley Stadium.

Was just about to mention this. One of my favourite ridiculous real buildings alongside Sway Tower and Fonthill Abbey.

some of the problems I am currently experiencing with the C+L chairs suggests the difficulties you had with the trackwork may not be down to you.  If the chairs are not seating properly the track may not have a level top which may induce derailments. Having Identified the cause I am hopeful that I shall be able to complete the work sucessfully.

Have you given thought to how you want to operate the turnouts electrical or mechanical?  It  will have an influence on the stretchers (tie bars) .

The past few years I believe have also seen an increase in your skills. The buildings construction I will admit you seem to have been on top of from the start.  The odd experiments with locos and rolling stock seem to be less tentative and more positive now than at the start. You have also displayed quite an impressive knowledge of the pre-grouping scene over the years.

It has been an interesting ride and I have no intention of stepping off this train.

Comrades!  It's the Five Train Plan (so, it should only take 4 trains to complete it)!

Thank you, Don.

I had thought wire and tube, but I am open minded.  Perhaps we heed to pause and consider what is best?

Summers seventeen, and all that jazz.. James, congratulations on getting to page thousand, pleased to see how much progression you’ve had since your “happy camping” days. Long may it continue!

Stephen, you’re correct, as ever, I am mixing my managers up. (Retires in confusion to the bodging room)

Oh lor'

The Kulaks of the Peoples Republic of West Norfolk will be quaking in their boots!!!

Especially as Five of Anything Plans proverbially end up with a surplus of Left Hand Boots. Or Tractors with no TVO to fuel them.

Oh well.  Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad!

Goodness me - 1000 pages, and oh what fun we've had getting here.

Thanks to all CA parishioners far and wide for making this a fun and interesting place to be, long may it continue!

Looking forward to the next stage and seeing James' finished five trains. I like the sound of the 'BLT No.3 0-4-0 Kitson Tram and 4-coach Bishop's Lynn set' - but am curious - is this based on the one preserved at the Streetlife Museum in Hull?

Having recently decided that Elsbridge (Wharf) will now be built as a tramway, I'm on the lookout for suitable oddball motive power :)

What with rtl bullhead now more prevalent, would it be easier to mix and match, using this with just a few bespoke points? It might speed things up a tadge.

Onwards sir!

CA's track geometry requires bespoke pointwork.  Achingham could be planned to take off the shelf, though I'd have to make live difficult by interlacing the sleepers!

The Committee of the Birlstone Branch of The ASLE&F instructs that I should write, in my capacity as Branch Secretary, to tender Fraternal Greetings and Hearty Congratulations to the Brothers and Sisters of The People’s Prosperity Railway of The Soviet Socialist Repulic of West Norfolk on the attainment of the one thousandth page of the chronicle of their struggle against formidable odds to complete their railway.

Fraternally, Brother Scribbens (Passed Fireman)

PS: We had understood that your Ten Year Plan encompassed the collectivisation of all agriculture, the electrification of all villages, and the completion of the entire railway network. We have Great Expectations in regard progress in coming years.

To return briefly to the topic of facial hair – before it becomes lost in the mists of time – Sir Sam Fay had a rather splendid set at least in Great Central days.

Sir Sam’s Boots look odd to my eye.

Perhaps both should incorporate the prosperous Turn.
