Not only have you missed out in song, but the GWR seems to have been remiss in not slotting you in between Barbury and Barry.

"By the time I make Barnard Castle, she'll be sleepin'..."

I was only twenty four hours from Barney

Only one day to test both my eyes
I saw an optician's sign and didn't stop to resign...

or

Is this the way to Barnard Castle?
'Cos the PM's givin' me hassle

Test your eyes in Barnard Castle
Where the Press Pack waits for me.

Lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie

Lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie

Lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie

There is actually a folk song about a bloke from Barnard Castle, or possibly the lord’s lady that he is a’bedding was from there. It’s called “Matty Groves” and the Kipper Family didn’t a brilliant skit on it called “Fatty Groves”.

Ah, so now we are entering the absolutely non-contentious realm of folk song lyrics. In the earliest reference (1613, in the play The Knight of the Burning Pestle) The Lord is called Barnet, and elsewhere Darnell, and all variants on these names appear in different versions, so any connection with Barnard Castle is as likely as a Barney eye-test.

Well, it would be fair to say that only in some versions is the lady with the glad eye from Barnard Castle.

”Burning Pestle” is a pretty is a fairly rude title for anything, BTW.

According to Fairport Convention, the location is unmentioned, and after slewing Matty and his Lady, Lord Darnell is magnanimous enough to have them buried together with the lady on top...

Hmmmmm...

You might want to close that bridge before sending the inaugural train across.

Or at least auto-isolate the 12 inches of track on either side of the lifting section!

Good Plan, although surely at WNR speeds and locomotive size, 5 or 6 inches is plenty.  To maintain local traditions, a cantilever system that lowers a sugar beet onto the line when the bridge is lifted might be more fitting than anything to do with 'trickery.

I was just applying the engineering rule of thumb of thinking of a feasible distance and doubling it!

Could be messy if the sugar beet hasn't been replaced for a while...

How about combining these suggestions to produce a cantalouped bridge?

Too much risk of melancholy is these straightened times.

Worse than that the play was originally performed by children

If you wanted to post some music Matty Groves would have been better than Al Bowley.

Great work on the layout test track. Mind you  'the cicle is complete' is not quite true even if you use battery power locos lack steering once you come of the end of the rails. Looking forward to the 'Golden Track Pin' moment to be captured for the parishioners we hope.

I've just remembered that the door can fully open to permit the intruder welcome visitor to stand safely inside James's study and "Stop, Look and Listen" in the best tradition.

At the scale speed one of the 3 WNR mixed trains per day is slowing for the crossing, any 'welcome' visitor will surely have got bored and withdrawn long ago, leaving behind a cold mug of tea and chocolate ginger biscuit.

A Brilliant Lawyer's resolution of a potentially multifaceted disaster.

I'd forgotten about the door being able to be opened whilst the flap was down. (I mean, the photographs???)

Perhaps there could be a Special that could be dispatched to receive the proffered refreshments?
