RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 20, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2021 Whilst trying to set up a small cameo scene by the engine shed, I decided that the point rodding is just too high! There’s nothing for it, that ballast needs to come up! The point rodding has now been sunk down. I’ve also relaid the middle section with chinchilla dust to give it a smoother appearance. Looks promising. Just need to decide how to colour it...
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 21, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2021 Whilst hoovering the layout last night, the hoover hose decided to attach itself to the roadway and suck a chunk off. Great! Fast drying plaster mixed, lightly sanded, and painted over. Let’s hope it looks ok when it’s dried. 10

Interestingly here in the US I saw them using a giant vacuum cleaner truck to dig out a hole in the street. So art imitating life I guess (or vice versa)

RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 21, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2021 (edited) Just finishing off the patch by the loco shed, when I realised I put the 14xx in an unfortunate location. Not quite Titfield.,, More like Tetbury Thunderbolt. Can’t go yet, squires not here! RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 22, 2021 I think this is as good as the patch in front of the engine shed is going to get. The chinchilla dust has been painted grey, and dusted with Humbrol black and smoke grey weathering powder. Other than a slight adjustment to the point rodding to remove the kink, hopefully that looks better than before. And a close up of the scene in front of the shed.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 22, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 22, 2021 One of the things I’ve been putting off is this: At the top of the access road was an advertisement hoarding. Page 100 of Randolph indicates it has GWR 545 on the end plate, but try as I can, I can find no drawings to get a size. Does anyone have any ideas, otherwise I’ll have to fashion something approximate and try to get it to look about right.

Does anyone have any ideas, otherwise I’ll have to fashion something approximate and try to get it to look about right. I usually try to scale items from known or estimable dimensions. It's something that I have to do a lot of with my paintings when putting together a composition from scratch. If the fence posts are 4'0" high, 6" wide (across the slotted face) the fence rails are 4" deep, 2" thick, there's a little something to work with. Looking at the left-hand post and its relationship to the fence, I would say that it is 12" square. 10'0" high. The finial ball is 8" diameter and the base is 10" high. Total height 11'6". Allowing for a bit of foreshortening due to the angle of the photo, I would say that the board itself is 18'0" long, the poster panels being 5'0"- 8'0"- 5'0". Making a total length of 20'0". Hope that makes sense. 1

Long shot but maybe the Broad Gauge Society might know something about it http://www.broadgauge.org.uk/about/bgs_contacts.html . It looks rather too grand for a mere branch line; perhaps it's a cast-off from one of larger stations elsewhere on the GWR?
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 23, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2021 Advertising posters, then and now, were and are in standard sizes, so poster boards had and have identical spaces for them. If you can unearth a history of posters and hoardings, you might find data. There used to be a company called British Transport Advertising, in Newman St London, who sold space on BR poster sites and bus-sides. 1
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted January 23, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2021 Does this help? I have no idea whether it changed with use of the present office paper sizes. https://www.billboardadvertising.org.uk/size/all-sizes/
RMweb Gold Adrian Stevenson Posted January 24, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2021 Hi Chris, I cannot help on the size, but I think the suggestions already given should work. I have been following all your progress on the layout, great work. Purely out of interest, I am modelling Malmesbury Station in 7mm. It was about 7 miles from Tetbury. There was a very similar, but larger version of the billboard there. Sadly I don't have room to model it. But I thought I would show a photo of it for you. Cheers, Ade. 5
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2021 I wanted to do a couple of jobs that I’ve been putting off on the layout. Firstly the weighbridge. The weighing plate from a Wills SS16 kit was chopped into the ground. It looked a bit uneven around the edges so I’ve given it a bit of weathering. I also decided to fit the rail fence to the side of the goods yard. This is what I was aiming for And this is what I achieved by soldering bits of Peco rail together, painting it black and giving it a bit of smoke grey weathering powder. Whilst it looks OK from that angle, the alignment is a bit tight against the vehicle crossing. I’m out of time today, so I might realign it another evening. 18
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 26, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2021 In trying to improve the image stacking on a previous image, I thought I'd share my second attempt of the loco in the headshunt photo. 9759 takes a break mid-shunt.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2021 9759 is on duty today, and the crew take a chance to chat to a visitor on shed. No image stacking here. Just a single cropped iPhone photo.
RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2021 (edited) Although now I'm viewing the image on a computer rather than the iPhone screen, its frustrating the smokebox image isn't quite sharp enough. I think with photographing locos, you need to stack two images together to get the depth of field corrected. I'll have to experiment with a few more photos. RMweb Gold Chris Chewter Posted January 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2021 This is a double image stack I've been working on last night, where I've focussed the iPhone on the front and the rear of the loco. That seems to come out better. I've had to tidy up a bit of image ghosting around the lamp handle. Also, the figure on the left is slightly out of focus, but they're always a pain to get right! 11
MrWolf
Looks very sharp. I wouldn't worry too much about the figure, if it was a 'real' photo, passersby don't stand still until it's too late anyway. The wall and car are sharp too but don't overtake the main subject, so I reckon that you have it bang on. 1
RMweb Premium Keith Addenbrooke Posted January 27, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2021 I’d agree with @MrWolf that the photo of 5532 looks great - to me I think it looks authentic, not just stunning modelling well captured on camera (the only thing my brain is struggling with is seeing this in colour, not black and white - which is a compliment on the quality of course). Comparing the photos of 5532 and 9759 above, I wonder if the ‘secret’ with getting people in sharp focus is to have them conveniently placed alongside one of the points of focus for the shot? It’s not something I’ve thought of before.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted January 27, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2021 If you've not already done so have a look at the Little Muddle thread, Kevin has been photo stacking for ages now and his photos are superb.
