Oakengates station on the Paddington to Birkenhead line

Recommended Posts

In an outline planning permission application for housing on each side of the former LNWR Wellington-Stafford line at Donnington, the Rail Services part of the Transport Assessment states that the nearest rail station (at least they didn’t say train station) is 4.5km away at Oakengates.

Fair enough

It then goes on to describe Oakengates as being situated on the London (Paddington) to Birkenhead via Birmingham Snow Hill line.

(Ghosts of Castles and chocolate and cream stock)

It would be nice to know that the planners really did their research and didn’t just lift it straight from Wikipedia…….

They've got the summary of the present service at Oakengates right (hourly!)

Sadly, the assessment then goes on to say that due to the lack of sustainable transport links to the station, most people will drive to the station. Actually, most people will just drive. But, Telford was built for the motor car and not with public transport in mind.

Actually if they wanted to be accurately pedantic they would have identified it as being on the Birmingham - Shrewsbury section of the Didcot to Chester Line (there being officially no such thing as the 'Paddington to Birkenhead Line').  And for amusement they might have added that the milepost mileage is that measured from Paddington via Didcot and Birmingham Snow Hill.

Clearly their research has not been particularly thorough as you say ;)

After 1967, when the main line service via Snow Hill was discontinued.

It was the Wolverhampton (High Level) to Shrewsbury line and only every two hours (by DMU) as well because the alternate hour Wolverhampton to Chester trains declined to stop there.

Apart from three Shrewsbury to Euston trains, it was all change at Wolverhampton after that.

A pretty miserable service where once there had been restaurant car expresses.

As a footnote Dunstall Park station remained open for another year served only by a couple of peak time trains that started from Wolverhampton Low Level and may or may not have continued to Snow Hill.
