The 13:35 to Stirling was routed via the GSW main line and the Rutherglen and Coatbridge.

 

The use of open car flats came to an end in 1988 with the 1M69 11:40 MWFO Stirling to London Euston being the last service to use them.

There was a timetabled Bournemouth - Edinburgh sleeping / seated overnight train for a few years more recently than the Motorail and using Mk3 sleepers.  The Motorail used Mk 1 sleepers.  The Bournemouth was a portion attached to another IC Cross-Country sector working.  IIRC that was a Bristol - Glasgow with the two running combined as one train between Birmingham and Carstairs.

Correct Rick. That would have been in the late 80s or early 90s. It was a loco plus four coaches (BG, two Mk3 sleepers and some sort of Mk2 aircon coach). For at least some of the time it was a loco change at Reading (booked times were 2235-2245) so used the old west end bay (platform 7). I signalled it in there myself on many occasions. I have a feeling it may even have started from Poole and I'm fairly sure the train it combined with at New Street came from Plymouth. I could be wrong about that but I certainly travelled on a Plymouth to Scotland sleeper around that time.

Very interesting Andy, thanks for posting the link.  Confirms the Cambridge-Stirling service was altered to start from Ely for the 1979 season, supposed to have been a temporary alteration although in fact it never returned to Cambridge.

With the Headcode 1A10 I would think that this would more likely be a southbound train, if it was heading for Perth it would be more likely to have a 1Sxx headcode

That depends on the year. Up to 1969 all up and down Scottish expresses which did not deviate from the ECML displayed an "A" headcode. Up trains had odd numbers and down trains even ones.

 

It was only after mid 69 that the "S" appeared for down passenger trains.

 

Through the late 60s 1A10 was the 0749 Caledonian Road to Perth which would fit for 1968/9.

as jonny777 says, must be earlier than the timetable change in may 1969 as 1A10 from then was the 8.32 Cleethorpes - KX (weekdays and saturdays) or the 10:42 Grimsby - King's Cross (sundays, from Cleethorpes 10:32 25/5-28/9). [source napier chronicles - http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/wtt69-70.htm ]

 

EDIT: forgot to say, they are cracking pics. TCVs, carriage destination boards in use on b/g stock, a green generator 47 on the front and a glimpse at the deck and 'internal' trussing of the bridge.

Apologies for wrong-guessing the year.  I have a few more slides taken on that day on the Forth Bridge, if there is any interest - perhaps on a new thread?

I can remember travelling on the Newton-le-Willows to Newton Abbot motorail as a kid in about 1970. I'n sure it ran via the North & West via Hereford.. Have some very brief shots of the return train at Newton Abbot on a family film and they where carflats. When I moved to Hereford in 1984, Hereford traincrew still had a job to work a motorail from Hereford to Bristol on a Saturday. Only worked it a couple of times before it finished. I don't think it lasted into the 1985 season and I can't remember its originating point or destination.

A4 Pacific 60021 'Wild Swan' passes through Doncaster station with the down Anglo Scottish Car-Carrier from London Caledonian Road to Edinburgh Waverley. The car transporters can be seen towards the rear of the train, which also includes a catering vehicle.

An unidentified class 47/0 passes Dawlish station with a Motorail train comprised of the Newton Chambers Mk1 car carriers. The train is 1E01 which I think is the Penzance to Newcastle service. Corrections welcome.

Interesting because that motorail has used the flyover so has come from Bristol and also has a peak loco which is unlikely for the Olympia train. So despite the buffet, could it be something else. Edited by brushman47544

There was 1V81 10:43 SO York - Newton Abbot motorail which carried an RB as first vehicle between 16 June and 1 September, so I suggest it is probably this train.

 

Full formation was RB+5FK+BFK+9FVV, which seems to match pretty well, due through Taunton at 16:10.

I found the DVD the other night, it was London vs Devon, mostly car shots but a few shots of a Western pulling out of Newton Abbott. Entertaining watch and an interesting insight into what was considered acceptable at the time with at least one overt sexist inuendo in it...

From the 1970 WR Marshalling Book:

Restaurant Unclassified included in the rake. It doesn't state the stock is from another region so it must be Western Region allocated, very probably Laira.

Edit: The LMR book states WR stock.
