West Sands - BR (SR) Electrified south coast branch terminus - circa 1968-70

Looking at that Walthers model, a lot will depend upon how much of a substation spotter you are. It looks to me as if it represents a much higher voltage installation, and a much higher rating of transformer, of a simpler kind ......... it would be a bit like running a broad gauge loco on standard gauge track: 99% of people wouldn't know the difference, but any railway-minded souls would find it troubling.

I had a look at the Walthers Substation, but I thought it looked way too North American to Anglicise.

The transformer for my substation is bits from the Walthers transformer though.....

OK, so on Saturday I managed to arrange some time to get take the layout apart and erect the two boards on the dining table.

The 2 sidings are now laid and wired up. All I need to do now is fit the new point motor, and wire it into the control panel.

Thoughts have turned to the buildings on the sidings, and i'm debating whether the provender store could be half-mounted on a loading dock with the crane on it as well. It would allow multiple box vans to be unloaded at once. Just wonder what everyone else thinks?

I'll probably be working on the substation today, although I have a couple of Dapol Presflos to finish building....

The best laid plans, and all that. Most of the week has been scrubbed due to having a lousy cold, so haven't felt like doing much once i've got home from work.

However, last night I managed to get the Kadees mounted on these.

Hopefully there will be a bit more progress on the layout this weekend, although I should be sorting out the back garden for a party in a couple of weeks, so what ever I do will probably be small. I might even have a chance to play trains!

Well, whilst doing the garden in the rather warm weather this weekend, I took the opportunity to paint and ballast the new goods sidings.

20190604_184411.jpg.285088c10f26d4a9447d08f61ba8f245.jpg

First started with a coat of Railmatch Sleeper Grime, then ballasted, and then sprayed with Humbrol 29 once the ballast was dry. Then gave a light blast over the top again with some sleeper grime.

Will come back to it, and probably do some dry-brush weathering here and there.

Looking back over the past few pages i've realised the lack of photos of the layout with actual trains in them, so here's a few from tonight before I went up the club.

So, we have 4-TC 404 and D6511 arriving with a service from Salisbury, and then D6551 leaving West Sands with a train of empty cement hoppers. We then see 4-Cep 7134 arriving with a train from London.

Over the past couple of evenings, i've been working on the substation again , and produced this little item.

1627290756_2019-06-1123_51_17.jpg.e3382483efd3459553109c7ad26b6be3.jpg1082057901_2019-06-1123_51_01.jpg.f2be5d26c18a5a6a384e8ea35be9b8b2.jpg

It's my representation of a 33kv oil circuit breaker. Hopefully this should look pretty good nestled between 2 sets of rafts.

Hi Chris,

What's the origins of the 4-TC, a few pics up, please?

That 4-TC is one of the Kernow/Bachmann releases. Very nice model, even if it puts my own scratchbuilt version in the shade somewhat.

It really needs weathering, but i'm afraid too. Mind you, I was the same with my Kernow thumper, and that finally succumbed to the weathering brush.

I'll try and take some more pics and post them up.

Here are a couple of pics of the 4-TC that I managed to grab before heading off to work this morning.

And here are some shots of my own scratchbuilt / modified RTR 3-TC set.

These 3 photos were taken on the "Blackhurst" incarnation of the layout.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the Bachmann 4-TC; probably because its way outside my budget.

I must admit it was rather an extravagance when I bought it, but I had always promised myself that if one was made ready to run, especially in Blue & Grey (I have a phobia of painting that livery!) , I would have to get one.

So i've managed to complete the Substation building. Only the track feeds need to be added. I'm thinking it will only need 2 at most.

Just need to complete the rafts and the base,  and the fencing.....

On Sunday between housework and the F1, I managed to re-number and weather the roof of my Bachmann Class 47.

724999722_2019-06-2517_43_14.jpg.ff159fd211fcf44d05345221448ed195.jpg1794684364_2019-06-2517_43_55.jpg.807eab0eec31a2bde530737d2c0afecb.jpg

This is the recent weathered Bachmann release numbered as 47256 which was one of the last 47's to remain in green. I think it finally got repainted into blue in 1979.

I have only renumbered one side only, back to its pre-TOPS number of D1934. I'm not sure if this ever got down Chichester way, but plenty of other 47s did on summer excursions, so its not beyond the realms of possibility.

I've given the roof a rather heavy blast of roof dirt from either end to represent the build up they would have got. The Bachmann weathering is way too subtle to me, and wasn't much more than a waft over with some brown. I've still got too weather around the exhaust and boiler ports though, and give the underframe a bit more dirt too....

Modelling progress seems to have slowed of late. The recent warm weather hasn't been helping. However, i've been working on a project that been in the back of my mind for a while.

I have a couple of Lima Mk1 CCT's, one of which I drilled out the axle boxes to replace the dreadful Lima pizza-cutter wheels. However, this did nothing for the incorrect ride-height.

The other has been languishing in a box, along with a Parkside LNER Extra Long CCT kit to donate it's chassis.

Below is the progress I have currently made. The battery boxes were taken from the old Lima chassis.

I'm not sure what colour i'm going to repaint it in. I'm tempted to go with heavily weathered maroon, just to make a change.

All that sort of vans were always so filthy it was nigh-on impossible to tell what colour they were supposed to be, so “brake block dust” would probably be the appropriate livery, possibly with the numbers having fewer layers of grime than the rest.

That's hopefully the look i'll get, with just a slight hint of the original colour underneath. I have a Syphon G in blue that needs the treatment too, plus some Southern vans in green which probably should be the same.
