IoW light rail conversion proposed

I am wondering if it was specially chartered as WightLink do have a spare one parked up opposite Gunwharf Quay most of the day at the moment which could have been used.  The video from the Isle of Wight paper seems to show the lorry and escort van as the only vehicles on the car deck.

Nope, they both came over on scheduled sailings but I think they let the other vehicles off first. They aren't particularly busy at the moment anyway, unsurprisingly.

At least VivaRail make them look a little different - the poor IOW know what their next train is decades before they receive them.

I am going to make a wild stab in the dark guess that if there ever is a replacement for the 484 it will be S Stock.

The passengers will see a big improvement in headroom and they now have wifi to sit down and watch a movie (intro or a music video)

The Southern Railway used to bring new stock from pompy to Newport IOW on a special floating bridge and then lifting them straight onto the track in Newport quay. They were taken to Ryde works for pre service after which of course they entered service.Several locos at a time came over as did new coaches and wagons pity the line is not there now .

I've seen a number of photos of railway vehicles being transported from Southampton to the IOW, rather than from Portsmouth.

Southampton dock's giant floating crane was itself used as a barge to transport them, as well as providing the lifting gear...

Note Southampton's famous floating dock in the second photo.

"Carrier".  Second hand from the Tay (photo probably at Burntisland) used for a train ferry service from Langstone to St Helens for wagons during the 1880's. Not very succesful, it couldnt really cope with the open waters compared to the Tay.  No known photos of any mainland wagons on the Island although there are records of some wagon repair bills for Isle of Wight Central wagons sent in by mainland companies.

There is a very nice model of Burntisland about which includes "Carrier" and its dock.

The floating crane pictured was the normal delivery method used by the SR, stock being landed at Medina Wharf.  Earlier an Admiralty crane was used once for a loco delivery to Ryde Pier.

Previously to this locos and stock were delivered by barge and offloaded using  temporary track & ramps.

The old train ferry birth at St Helens was a favourite for this as this still had sidings running end on to the sea.

All 1966 onwards deliveries have used lorries and the car ferry.

Wrong on two counts - Mr.Bouch might disagree about the silvery Tay being calm as you imply ....... er- and Burntisland's on the other Firth, the Forth.

You might be thinking of Medina Wharf near Cowes? Newport Quay near the station was technically rail-served by a low-level bridge across the river, but only briefly and the sidings were probably never used.

Vivrail have done a good job on these new units as they did on the units used on the lne to Bedford at leatsst the donor units were good quality stock. At least the island will be able to travel in clean comfortable units that will be reliable providing a good train service .

I see (or hear rather) that they retain the rather insipid LT air whistle.

I quite like the London Underground air whistles actually (which are also fitted to the more recent S stock). Do the current class 483s still have these?

On a separate note, obviously the 484s fit through Ryde tunnel but did any work have to be done to permit this? Obviously lowering the track there would bring back the problems with flooding that prompted it to be raised in the first place.

Didn’t realise they had any battery capability.

Might have answered my own question  on this one - I understand from comments elsewhere online that it is temporarily rigged to run off batteries that sit in the passenger saloon, to allow it to be tested initially at Vivarail’s site, and now on Island Line with power switched off (so doesn’t have permanent battery capability).

Yes they do.  Maybe not the exact same note but certainly similar.
