Here are a few pics of the two BR05's which can be seen running on the layout during shows.

 

Both are Arnold models. The black one is pretty much standard, apart from a bit of weathering. The streamlined one had undergone some major work to remove the lower half of her streamlined casing.

After far too long an absence, I'm finally able to get back into me workshop and continue work on Remagen. So here's a long overdue update. As well as the LNER stuff I've been filling my time with, I've also been working done if the smaller details for the layout.

 

 

this one here should answer the question of what happened to the Lancaster crew.

A few locals from Erpel are helping out the bridge garrison to clear the trees from the field of fire of the east bank Anti-tank gun position, which is hidden behind the armoured railcar.

A long over due update on Remagen.

 

Now I can get back into my workshop, the layout is back up on the worktop ready for some more detailing work.

 

The two main tasks will be tackle over the next month is to rework all the German armour that's parked in the fields, and start on the refugee column on the Remagen - Kripp road.

 

 

 

 

 

I'm also not far off starting the scenic work on the final scenic board. The Remagen - Sinzig road and rail line are in, and all the form has been rubbed down. Next step is to cover it with plaster bandage.

A little bit more detail work done. A platoon of Sdkfz251 Hanomags. These are right at the back of the layout partly hidden by an apple orchard.

Another Panther tank I've been working on.

Based on the below photo, this Panther is getting its gear box removed for repair.

 

 

Both models are from Arrowhead Miniatures. The Panther is pretty much stock apart from the access hatch removed from above the drivers & co-drivers seats. The Sdkfz8 is the unarmoured flak half track that's had the crane from the NAG model fitted to it.

 

These two will be part of an armoured company that getting some well needed repair and maintenance beneath the cover of trees before being heading west to confront the

Yesterday was a rather frustrating day on the layout. I wanted to get a second layer of flock onto the church board and start adding foliage. But to my annoyance, I've ran out of flock, bushes, trees and glue.... Almost everything. So I ended up getting almost nothing done.

 

This afternoon, however saw much more Progress. Following a visit to my local railway show, I managed to restock on most of what I needed and managed to crack on with adding foliage to the church board.

With Peterborough rapidly approaching th progress on the last scenic board isn't going as quickly as I hoped. The main greenery is done around the tunnel and along the rear part of the church. Next stag is to work around the side and front of the church, then trees to add.

With Peterborough less than 6 weeks away, it's time for a bit of stock preparation work.

 

I spent this morning working though these 12 boxes checking all 17 train sets for damage and general wear & tear. All the locos will be getting the once over and a test run later this week.

 

I've another 4 boxes to work though with a further 7 train sets, in various states on build. If I get them all finished, that'll give me 24 train sets to rotate though the layout.

Should anyone be interested in German (and other) armour, may I recommend the 'Musée des Blindées' at Saumur, in the Loire Valley- it is a huge collection of AFVs, from the earliest days. Only a small proportion is on display, but if you go down there on the weekend of Pentecote (last weekend of May), there is a modelling exhibition, and the reserve collection is open for viewing.

Progress made of the Operation Greif Train this morning. Its a rake of German armour that's been disguised to look like American armour, and used in the opening hours of the Battle of the Bulge. I need to get hold of a few more white stars for the half tracks to complete.

 

I can see me getting lots of comments about this one at Peterborough.

That loco certainly has presence.

 

IIRC operation Greif was a failure - the objective to capture/destroy bridges and cause Allied command confusion didn't happen, many of the Germans were caught and captured wearing Allied uniforms, and were tried and convicted of espionage and executed by firing squad.

You are correct. Very little tatical advantage was made by the disguised troops and tanks, and most where either captured or destroyed within the first few hours of the offensive. However, what it did do was cause utter condition and distrust among American units with several friendly fire incidents over wrongly remembered baseball champions.

I'm making steady progress on the church board, but way too slow for my liking. The church paths and lawns are in and I've started adding details such as the iron railings.

 

I'm never going to have the church anywhere near finished in time for Peterborough, so I've taken the decision to paint it black and place on the layout as a shadow.

The newest toy for the layout arrived today. Two V2 rocket launch set (only one pictured). 1:144 scale resin casting sent all the way from my friend in China.

 

 

The intension is to convert these into a train mounted launcher as per the photos below. Unfortunately it's wont be done before Peterborough, so just the standard V2 train will be running at that show. You'll have to wait until TrainWest in April to see this one running.
