Grizz Posted March 21, 2018 Author Share Posted March 21, 2018 Sadly that's the name of the game with RTR bogies. They just aren't available very often at a reasonable price. I have had to 'compromise' loads of times and it doesn't really sit comfortably but I have had to live with it. Buy em when you see em....... Your engineers train sounds interesting. Not too many OBA floating around any more. Somewhere I have some photos of a Dutch liveried one on the Uckfield line back in 97 with 33116 in a possession. Getting those bogies that go under Falcon JNAs would be a coup if they were made available, again I would buy a few hundred. As can be seen from the various photos I have posted I've had to use the TF25s on numerous occasions just for ease and cost of getting wagons rolling. The thickness of styrene sheet I use depends on the build. Mostly either 0.5, 0.75 or 1mm or a combination of all of them. The only thing that has sometimes randomly occurred over the years is that when the ribs are added the body can bow in at the top after time, especially when the top horizontal ribs that run the length of the wagon are added. To try to counter this on the last build of wagons I tried vertically scoring the wagon sides and pre-curving them outwards, the scoring being finally hidden behind the vertical ribs. Also I precuved the top rib so that it bowed out. So far it seems to have worked. There doesn't appear to be any reason why it happens though, bit of a mystery, I only use one brand of liquid poly and it is the same one Marco appears to use, it is normally very reliable when used sparingly. I've used them on BVA steel cassette wagons, they're also on the HQA autoballasters and some HOBC wagons too. Because aligning the axles with the white metal bolster S-Kits supply is tricky, I use the etched brass fold-up frames from Phil Eames at Stenson Models. Yeah RTR O&K JHAs at £50 a pop and possibly going to need around 15 to 20 of em to make it look real good......best start selling something or its back to holding up banks for most. Grizz Posted June 3, 2018 Author Share Posted June 3, 2018 Livery is still under final decision, possibly purple or grey or dark blue. EALNOS JNA type but with EURO influence. Finally got round to uniting the body with the chassis, on the MVAstyle wagons. I have used four cut off clothes pins to hold the body onto the chassis. This is so that it can be removed and the chassis can be used for other loads. Also had ago at a 'What might have been' three axled TF25 or TFX25. I've used these under a Revell 'Ludmilla' loco kit which is used as a track cleaner with Gaugemaster axle hung rail cleaners soaked in isopropal alcohol. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Grizz Posted July 28, 2018 Author Share Posted July 28, 2018 So I finally get a few hours clear to spray the 22 wagons with the first coat of Halfords grey primer and what happens??? Half way through the process the heat wave breaks and it starts chucking down. Not an easy activity trying to pick up that number of wagons with still tacky bodies and not get them wet in the rain or finger prints in the paint. The reason I am spraying outside is that the guinea pigs have taken up residence in my workshop because it's too hot outside....apparently. The usual TF25s underneath but both are fitted with hand break wheels. Finally they are starting to take shape, they have had a coat of varnish and need appropriate decals. Yesterday and today they have had a final coat of grey and then a varnish coat, ready for some decals. It is sitting on Y25 type bogies but they were built for TF25s. Not sure which way to go with it. This is a difference in the coupling setting on each type, with the Y25s being shorter, so they will need modifications if I go with that type. Wagons in various states of finishing off, loads to add,painting of insides and adding couplings. Class 59 001 has been added to the fleet over the weekend. Hope to add the anniversary vinyls sooner or later. Grizz Posted August 4, 2018 Author Share Posted August 4, 2018 Marco superb work there mate. Particularly like the weathering on your wagons you've got it just right IMHO. I've seen some real horrors over the years, with wagons looking like they have been part of a Network Rail, Rail Head Treament Train. Do you use an air brush or dry brush or powders or a combo? Mine used to be mostly dry brush but I've learnt to air brush over the last couple of years. There is something to be said in favour of using both water based and spirt base paints. Spirt based spraying with diluted paint around 75/25 in favour of spirt seems to work best as long as I go slowly. The air res tank under the NR open wagon, was it scratch built or a casting or something else? Air tanks seem to vary so much in size. The last lot I made were built using Ever Green styrene tube with the used inhaler hard capsules fitted either end. The small end is discarded but using two of the bigger ends they fit perfectly. If they are then sprayed using Halfords primer they don't dissolve as they are designed to. I have hundreds of these and they work quite well. Once sealed with primer and the gloss varnish any water based paint can be applied without affecting them. This is a full one but it is the same thing. I secure them with super glue and that doesn't seem to affect them either. Have you decided to build any Yeoman Orenstein & Koppel hoppers or go for the eye wateringly expensive option? 59001 looks good, is it a Hornby model or chopped Bachmann?
